Section A

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

Doctors used to think that people who walked in their sleep were acting out their dreams. But this has been proved _28_.

In 1952 researchers learnt that when we _29_, our eyes move rapidly under closed lids. Tests show that everyone dreams every night. But we do not dream the whole time. Dreams occur when we are sleeping _30_, but seldom when we are sleeping deeply. It was found that sleep walkers are only active during deep sleep. They are not _31_ at the time.

An expert who has researched sleeping walking tells of a _32_ case. A college student would get up in her sleep. She would dress and walk a kilometer to a river. Then she would have a swim, then walk back to college and go back to bed. Like most sleep walkers, she could not, later, _33_ doing any of those things.

There are _34_ of sleep walkers driving cars, buying a ticket and getting on a plane, even climbing from one rooftop to the next.

People who are sleepwalking seem to be in a trance(恍惚). If they are _35_, they may not answer. If they do, they may sound offhand, as though annoyed.

Doctors agree that sleep walkers should be woken gently. The best way to wake them is to repeat their names _36_, again and again.

If a sleep walker is left alone, he will usually return to his _37_ when he has finished what he is doing.

34.A. examples B. surveys C. accidents D. groups

35.A. held up B. woken up C. turned back D. spoken to

36.A. toughly B. calmly C. quickly D. loudly

37.A. bed B. home C. sleep D. control

(A)

A long time ago, on the coast of Japan, there lived a family of fishermen named Kuzumi. The youngest son was called Urashima. He was a kind boy and a clever fisherman.

One day he went out in his boat and threw out his line. He didn’t catch any fish – instead he caught a great tortoise. It had a large hard shell, a funny wrinkled old-man face and a tiny tail. Now, although its face looked old, this tortoise was only a youngster. Urashima, too, knew that the tortoise was no older than he; and he also knew that Japanese tortoises lived for a thousand years. So he thought to himself, ‘Why should I kill it, when there ar e plenty of fish for me to eat? After all, it’s got about another nine hundred and eighty-eight years to live yet. It would be cruel to kill it now.’ So Urashima threw the tortoise back into the sea.

After he made the catch, he felt drowsy. So he lay down in his boat in the hot summer sun and went off to sleep. As he slept, a beautiful girl came up from beneath the waves. She climbed into the boat and woke Urashima with a touch of her hand. He stared at her still in surprise.

‘I am the daughter of the Sea God,’ she said, ‘and I live in the Dragon Palace beyond the sea.

I was the tortoise you threw back, for my father sent me in disguise(乔装打扮)to see what you would do. Now my father has sent for you. If you learn to love me, we shall be married and live in hap piness for a thousand years in the Dragon Palace.’

(C)

For years, doctors have been recommending patients to skip the beef and order the salmon (大马哈鱼)now and then. Yet Americans still consume seven times as much red meat as fish. Only about one in five eats the recommended two servings of seafood per week.

Why don’t we take the plunge more often? By now, y ou've heard that seafood offers far-ranging health benefits, but you’ve also heard that some fish contain high levels of toxins(毒素), leaving you to wonder if all the white meat at your grocer's seafood counter is truly safe. So

what is fish—miracle food or health threat?

If you eat a modest amount of fish, you dramatically decrease your risk of dying from a heart attack. Findings from 30 large studies conducted around the world show that people who consume just one or two servings of fish per week lower their risk of a fatal heart attack by an average of 36 percent.

But it's not just your heart that benefits when you dine on sea fare. Your brain does too. Fish lovers suffer fewer strokes(中风), cutting their risk by 40 percent in some studies. And mounting evidence suggests that omega-3 fatty acids help the brain with its normal, day-to-day function. A 2007 study of nearly 12,000 pregnant women found that children born to mothers who ate more than 12 ounces of seafood per week during pregnancy scored six points higher on tests of IQ than kids born to mothers who had other foods on the menu. As for adults, a recent Swedish study found that young men who ate fish more than once a week scored nearly 11 percent higher on IQ tests than males who rarely ate seafood. And in later years, fish eaters appear to be less likely to develop dementia(痴呆).

And more advantages may be reported in years to come: Scientists are studying whether fish helps prevent or treat other disorders.

45. All the following have been recommended by doctors EXCEPT ______.

A. reducing red meat consumption

B. having sea food twice every week

C. eating fish seven times the amount of red meat

D. consuming enough white meat during pregnancy

46. The relevant studies show that______.

A. fish contain high levels of toxins

B. a fatty acid in sea food helps brain function

C. children of fish-eaters always have high IQ

D. sea food doesn’t benefit non-pregnant females

47. The risks of the following can be lowered EXCEPT ______, if one eats sea food regularly.

A. dementia

B. stroke

C. poisoning

D. heart attack

48. The passage is mainly about ______.

A. varied sea food consumption rates

B. advantages of sea food consumption

C. recommendations for a sea food diet

D. the difference between white meat and red meat

Section C

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A - F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A. Trial period

B. Danger of the city

C. Funds from industry

D. Not what it appears to be

E. Prevention of road accidents

F. New safety awareness project

49.

It is a typical urban scene. Two cars are parked close together at the roadside and a child is attempting to cross the road from between them. Down the street, another car comes belting along. Houses flank the pavements and around the corner there is a brightly-lit petrol station. 50.

It is all extraordinarily realistic, but it is unreal. For the difference between this and thousands of similar locations throughout the country is that this street is indoors – it is a mock-up(实体模型)designed by studio set-builders from Anglia Television.

51.

We are standing inside a converted warehouse in Milton Keynes, home of a project which is the blueprint for an exciting new way of teaching children safety awareness, especially road safety. It is called Hazard Alley. If the centre proves successful and, having visited it, I am convinced it will, then its imaginative approach could easily be copied throughout the country.

52.

The project was started by the local authority in association with the police. The finance came from commercial sponsorship(赞助)by companies including Coca-cola, Volkswagen and Anglia TV. There is already a catchy cartoon character mascot(吉祥物)for the centre: Haza, the Hazard Alley cat.

53.

Hazard Alley is preparing its official opening, and the local schools which have experienced it so far have been testing out the centre before it launches into a full programme of group visits. It is already proving immensely popular. Eventually it may open to individual family groups. When that happens, it will be well worth a day trip: children will love it and they could learn something which may save their lives.

Section D

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.

For centuries, scientists have sought a clear explanation for laughter. One writer said that its function is to make something known or to gain fame over others. Another took the opposite view: we laugh in order not to cry.

Laughter is an emotional response, showing on e’s feelings of joy, involving characteristic sounds of the voice and movements of the features and the body. Speech is the spoken expression of symbols and the relations between symbols. With the development of speech, the number of occasions producing sudden experiences of pleasure increased, and since laughter was closely associated with speech, man had this means of expressing his pleasure. Man could express with laughter what other animals could not. Since the lower animals had no speech, they met fewer pleasurable situations and furthermore, were unable to laugh. Laughter gradually became established as man’s ability and therefore, it survived.

Now it is well-known that laughter has a refreshing effect on the mind and body, giving the body a feeling of well-being that few other activities are able to provide.

The smile comes before laughter, as shown clearly by the infant who can smile after six days, but can only laugh at twelve weeks. By the twelve-week state he becomes a comparatively well-developed creature, although not much differently equipped physically than he was at six days. At twelve weeks, although he cannot speak, he begins to understand the general meaning and tone of human sounds, and the dawn of the smile becomes the bright noonday sunlight of clear laughter. Therefore, we may again connect the origin of laughter with the origin of speech, as indicated by the gradual development of these two capacities in the human infant.

You are laughing because man learned to speak and therefore to laugh, and because nature confers benefits on the animal capable of laughter.

Answer the questions or complete the statements with NO MORE THAN 13WORDS.

54.When one is laughing, you can hear sounds of his pleased voice and see _________.

55.Why can man laugh while other animals can not?

56.What effect does laughter have?

57.A 12-week-old infant can laugh because __________.

Section B Passage

Directions: In section B, you will hear one short passage, and you will be asked three questions on the passage. The passage will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Living to 100 may be seen as a long life now, but according to a new study, it may be the norm for babies born today.

An article in a famous medical magazine shows that more than half of all babies born in

industrialized nations since the year 2000 can expect to live past 100, and half of all babies born in 2007 are likely to live to the age of 104.

I guess it’s good news for individuals, but it also brings a new challenge to society. For example, how to provide health care for a large number of elderly people? It could be a huge economic burden to take care of a lot of sick people. How to solve this problem? What’s more, since people live longer, many of them are likely to keep working longer. How to keep the elderly in the workforce, and at the same time to create jobs for the younger generations?

However, an increasingly older population may have some benefits. It appears that wisdom does come with age. Having more people with more experience should be beneficial.

11. According to the passage, how long is a baby born in 2000 expected to live?

12. Which of the following may NOT be the effect if people live longer?

13. What’s the author’s attitude towards people’s long life?

Section C Longer Conversation

Directions: In section C, you will hear one longer conversation. The conversation will be read twice. After you hear the conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with the information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

W: Excuse me. Could you tell me where Kimbell Hall is?

M: Oh, do you see that brown building over there?

W: Uh, behind the garden?

M: Yeah, that’s it. Come on. I’m going there, too. Are you here for the English placement test? W: Yes, I am. How about you?

M: Actually, I’m one of the English teachers here. What’s your name?

W: Anna Maria Cassini, but most people call me Anna. And you?

M: I'm John Anderson. So, where are you from?

W: From Italy.

M: Aha. And, uh, how long have you been here, in America?

W: Just three weeks.

M: Really? Your English sounds great!

W: Thanks. That’s because my family used to come here every summer when I was little. I can speak

pretty well, but now I want to go to college here, so I need to improve my skills. That’s why I

signed up for this English program.

M: I see. Uh, what do you want to major in?

W: International business. And I also want to take art classes, because I’m really into it.

M:Well, here’s Kimbell Hall. Good luck on the placement exam. It was nice meeting you, Ann.

Bye now.

W: Byebye.

Complete the form. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
