Unit 1 Tales of the unexplained

Reading part

Good motning/afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. My name is XXX. I’m in group XXX, number XXX. I’m so hornored and pleasure to have the chance to be here sharing my lesson with you.

The teaching material I choose to illustrate is taken from the Advance with English, Students’Book 2, Unit 1, Reading part, Boy missing, police puzzled. My teaching plan will include 5 parts: the analysis of teaching material, teaching aims, the important and difficult points, teaching methods and teaching procedure.

Part 1 Analysis of teaching material

The article is a news story about a boy whose disappearance was thought to be connected with a UFO. In this unit, Ss are expected to gain the overall understanding of the article and develop the ability of reading a news article. As we all know, reding is an essential element of learning English. As an input process, reading has great effect on the output of English learning, such as speaking and writing. Therefore, the lesson is in the important position of this unit. If Ss can master it well, it will be helpful for them to learn the rest of the unit.

Part 2 Teaching aims

According to the new curriculum standard and the syllabus, and after studying the teaching material, I set the teaching aims as follows:

1, knowledge objects

1) Ss can master the usage of important words and expressions;

2)Ss can understand the article well;

3)Ss will gain the idea of present perfect tense and present perfect continous tense. 2, ability objects

1) Ss can master the skills and strategy of reading a news article;

2) Ss can develop communicative ability through group or paired discussion.

3, moral objects

1) Arouse Ss’ interest in mysterious or unexplained phenomena;

2) By completing the tasks, the Ss set up self-confidence in language learning.

Part 3 The inportant and difficult points

Based on the requirement of the syllabus.

Important points: Ss learn the skill and strategies of reading and know how to stydy independently as well as by cooperation.

Difficult points: To help Ss learn to put the information from the text into practice and realize the ultimate purpose of language learning.

Part 4 Teaching methods

Well, how to achieve the teaching objectives, stress the important points and break through the difficult points? The key is how to make use of the proper teaching methods. I will use the follwing methods:

1)Discuss in pair or in groups;

2)Communicative teaching method;

3)Task-based teaching method;

4)Audio-visual teaching method.

At the same time, make use of the modern electricity teaching equipments, and all kinds of teaching means. It can mobilize the Ss’ tnthusiasm and creativity in learning English.

Part 5 Teaching procedure

In order to realize the teaching procedure properly and efficiently, under the principle of ‘ students centered’, I divide the teaching procedure into 6 steps.

Step 1 Lead-in

Have Ss focus on the title of the article, ‘Boy missing, police puzzled’, and ask some questions as follows:

1)Does the title arouse your interest when you read it? Can you complete the title?

2)What information can you get from the title?

3)Are you curious about why the writer uses an imcompleted sentence as the title?

Did you know that it is a feature of a news title? What are some other features of a news title?

Purpose: 1) To arouse Ss’interest in reading the artile; 2) To recall back Ss’prior knowledge about news article and make the knowledge as basement.

Step 2 Fast reading for general ideas

1, Before asking Ss to skim the passage, have them look at the news photographs first and describe what is happening in them.

Purpose: To train Ss’ abilities of imagination and logic.

2, Have Ss scan the passage and finish the questions in Part A. Guide them to pay attention to the first paragraph.

3, Play a tape for Ss. Have them scan the article again and locate specific information for Parts C1 and C2.

Purpose:1) Have Ss get the general idea of the passage and get some detailed information; 2) Have Ss get some information about what a news article will be through their own sense.

Step 3 Detailed reading

1, Show Ss a table with a projection about connection between Justin Foster and the strange object, so as to have Ss get more detailed information.

2, Explain the difficult expressions Ss encounter. Then have them finish Parts D and E.

Purpose: Enable Ss to understand the article better by using different reading skills.

Proper competition can arouse the Ss’interest in English learning. ‘Task-based ’teaching method is used here to develop the Ss’ability of communication and also their ability of co-operation will be well trained.

Step 4 Strategy introduction

Have Ss read the Reading Strategy part. Stress the key points of reaing a news article. Purpose: Help Ss form a clear clue of the reading strategy.

Step 5 Post-reading

1, Ask Ss to close the books andretell the story according to the table and kdy words they noted.

2, Finsh part F.

Purpose: I think if Ss can finish this task well, they will benefit a lot in their spoken English.

Step 6 Homework

Have Ss finish the practice on Page 86 to 88 and the writing part in Workbook. Purpose: Homework is so important and necessary for Ss to master the knowledge they learned after class. It will check whether Ss achieve the teaching aims.

As for the Bb, it mainly about the new words, expressions, sentences and the key points of reading strategy.

The lecture I choose to illustrate is unit 3, the reading part: Lost civilizations. Part 1 Teaching aims: 1.Make sure that student understand the text. 2.Help the students develop the ability of reading diary entries. 3.Enable the students to talk about the topic of civilization in English. Part 2 Difficult points 1.Let students learn how to improve their reading ability and ask them to retell the general idea of the text. 2.How to grasp the usage of important words and phrases. Part 3 Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in I will begin the lesson by showing pictures of some civilizations, such as the Statue of Zeus, the Taj Mahal, the city of Pompeii and the Potala Palace. Then I will ask some students to answer the following questions. (1)Who can give a definition on ‘civilization’? ——It’s about a society, its culture and its way of life during a particular period of time or in a particular part of the world, including architecture, art, literature, thought, religion and so on.
