录音原文

Section A

11. M: Professor Johnson’s lecture is so boring. I don’t think it’s useful for me.

W: How could you think so? It was very crucial to our final exam.

Q: What does the woman imply?

12. M: Rudy, will you please make ten copies of this report?

W: I’d like to, but the photocopier is out of order.

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

13. W: Edison seems to believe that this year’s football league match will be

wonderful.

M: Nonsense. Most others, including me, think differently.

Q: What does the man mean?

14. M: I want some chicken livers. Why is duck more expensive than chicken?

W: Ducks are not as popular, so few farmers raise them. It also costs more to grow

a duck to the same weight than it does a chicken.

Q: Why is chicken cheaper than duck?

15. W: We have a complete range of famous brands here. How about this one? It’s an

Omega.

M: I’m afraid that I’m not interested in watches with metal watchbands.

Q: What do we learn about the man from the conversation?

16. W: Why do you think this Star Wars episode was incredible?

M: Well, one of the most spectacular things about it is the special effects. State of the art special effects are the main reason for the success of the previous episode, so audience bear high expectation on this one. And I don’t think they will be disappointed.

Q: Why does the man like this Star Wars episode?

17. M: This is a good seat. I’m glad you suggested the move. Here in the front section

we can look out and enjoy the scenery. If you get seat in the middle of the plane, the wings block your view.

W: Feel the plane moving? Are we taking off now? Listen. The girls are giving instructions.

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

18. W: We don’t sell fakes here, sir. This jewel is a masterpiece, and I’m sure your

wife will love it. You can’t find a second one in New York, and it only costs you three thousand six hundred dollars.

M: Ok, I’ll take it. Here is the check. Oh, please gift-wrap it.

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

Conversation One

W: May I help you?

M: Yes. I would like to apply for one of these security guard positions you advertised in the local paper.

W: Good. May I ask you a few questions first? Have you ever worked as a security guard before?

M: Yes. At Chaffer’s Plaza in San Francisco and at the Regency Hotel for here in town.

W: How many years of experience have you had as a security guard? Have you had experience monitoring alarm systems?

M: I have had over four years of experience as a security guard. And I monitored several types of alarm systems in my previous job.

W: Very good. You seem to meet our minimum qualifications. Do you have any questions?

M: Yes. What are the wages and the hours?

W: The wages start at 8 dollars and 75 cents per hour. We have three shifts available, morning, evening and late night.

M: Good. I was hoping to get an evening job since I go to school in the mornings. W: Well, you can write on your application that you prefer the evening shift.

M: I tried on about twenty. This one is n’t really what I wanted.

W: Why did you buy it then?

M: The salesman sold it to me before I realized what had happened. He just never stopped talking and he told me some stories about the latest fashion and special reductions. Before I could say anything he’d wrapped it up and taken my money. W: Well, it doesn’t look too bad. I think it looks good on you.

M: But I went out to get a blue sweater with a V-neck, short sleeves and pattern, and I came home with a brown one with a high neck, long sleeves and no pattern.

W: You must be easily taken in. you’ve got to learn to stand up to those high-pressure salesman. They will sell you all sorts of things you don’t want if you don’t watch out.

M: Next time I’ll send my wife. She’ll probably sell something to the salesman.

W: That’s a good idea. Actually women are good at shopping. Whenever my husband and buy something important, I have the final say.

Section B

Passage One

From this lookout we enjoy one of the most spectacular views of San Francisco. As you can see, the city rests on a series of hills varying in altitude from sea level to 938 feet. The first permanent settlement was made at this site in 1776. For thirteen years the village had fewer than 100 inhabitants. But in 1848, with the discovery of gold, the population grew to ten thousand. The same year the name was changed from Yerba Buea to San Francisco. By 1862 telegraph communication linked San Francisco with eastern cities, and by 1869, the first transcontinental railroad connected the Pacific coast with the Atlantic seaboard. Today San Francisco has a population of almost 3 million. It is the financial center of the west, and serves as the terminus for the trans-Pacific steamship lines and air traffic. The port of San Francisco which is almost 18 miles long with 42 piers, handles between 5 and 6 million tons of cargo annually. And now, if you will look to your right, you should just be able to see the east section of the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge, which is more than one mile long, spans the harbor from San Francisco to Marin County and the Red Wood Highway. It was completed in 1937 at a cost of 32 million dollars and is still one of the largest suspension bridges in the world.

Questions 26 to 28 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

26. According to the speaker, what happened in 1848?

27. What is the population of San Francisco now?

28. What can we learn about Golden Gate Bridge?

Passage Two

A new study warns that about 30% of the world’s people may not have enough water by the year 2025. A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says more than 335 million people lack enough water now. these people live in 28 countries, mostly in Africa or the Middle East. PAI researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about 3,000 million people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same. Mr. Egnelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world. The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water may also result in more international conflict. Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get 60% of their fresh water from other countries. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability of developing countries to improve their economies. The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the

water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use water for agriculture. The report also says long-term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth.

Questions 29 to 31 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

29. How many people are short of water according to the study?

30. What problems from lack of water are mentioned in the report?

31. What is one of the solutions to the water problem given by the study?

Passage Three

A South Africa businessman is refusing to leave Croatia until he finds a girl who he saw across a crowded bar. Keith Van Der Spuy has never even spoken to the girl but he says she was the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. He has cancelled his flight home and taken out advertisements in local newspapers in the port town of Split. Mr. Van Der Spuy says he was having a drink in the bar when he saw the pretty girl smile at him across the bar. While he was trying to look at her closely she disappeared. But he’s convinced she was a local because he heard her calling to a female friend shortly before he lost sight of her. Van Der Spuy, who is also the head of the South Africa water-polo association, said he could not get her out of his mind and when he got to the airport, then he realized he could not board the plane. He has already extended his holiday for four months, and says he is prepared to stay in Split for as long as it takes. ―I will not leave this place for years if I have to. When I saw her and she looked at me I knew she was the one. There was pure chemistry between us. I can’t get her out of my head. I just want to meet her and see her long dark hair and beautiful smile again. She is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.‖― If she is married or is not interested I can accept it – but I have to know. I have to see her one more time, and I have even bought a diamond ring for her.‖

Questions 32 to 35 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

32. How long has the man decided to stay in Split?

33. Where was the man when he saw the pretty girl?

34. What do we learn from the passage?

35. What will the man do if the woman is not interested in him?

Section C:

Today’s lecture is on the subject of Pronunciation Achievement Factors.

As an introduction we should ask ourselves three questions. Why should it be difficult for adults to learn accurate pronunciation in a foreign language? Secondly, why do some people achieve better results than others? And thirdly, what factors predict who will achieve good pronunciation?

There have been several research studies identifying factors that affect performance. Firstly, and perhaps the most significant was the mother tongue. The closer the student’s own language is English to start with, the greater chance of high achievement. Secondly, he discovered that the learner’s attitude towards pronunciation makes a difference: Students who believe in the importance of

pronunciation tend to make more progress. Thirdly, contact with native speakers of the language has strong positive effects on pronunciation. Fourthly, and possibly the least important, was the student’s own natural ability. A good ear and ability to imitate help, but are far less significant than the other three factors.

Two other factors were tested but found to be of little overall importance: the sex of the student and the personality –whether the learner is outgoing or shy. What conclusion can be drawn from these studies? We can’t change the first factor – the mother tongue –but we can control the second and third. Therefore, we have considerable influence over our own progress with pronunciation.

Part I Writing

How to Build Students’ Self-confidence

Being an assured and confident person has many benefits, in personal life as well as in employment, career development and business. Whatever your aims and ambitions in life may be, building your self-confidence will play an important role in achieving success and overcoming any fears you may have along the way.

One’s self-confidence can be cultivated by using a variety of approaches in school. For example, schools may organize various activities or games and encourage students to join in.

Meanwhile, schools should tell students that success is related to the effort and the process of trying to achieve something is more important than the result, for fun as it is, winning is not the main objective. Only when students are not afraid of making mistakes, will they have more chances to develop confidence in themselves.

As college students, we can gain self-confidence by starting with things that are small and much easy to win. Then we keep ourselves grounded and try to make progress one step at a time. In this way, we’ll put ourselves on the path to success——and build the self-confidence that comes with this.
