A

As weather cools across the United States, a growing number of Americans visit farms. They harvest fruits, enjoy hay wagon rides and walk in the fields. These people are called "agri-tourists". They improve the economy of rural areas and help farmers increase their profits.

School children are walking in a corn field maze. The corn is cut into tricky passageways that make it difficult to find a way out. The children are from Yorktown Elementary School in Bowie Maryland. They have traveled to Montpelier Farms in Prince George's County which is also in Maryland. The farm is about 40 kilometers from The White House.

Debbie Pierson is the student's teacher. "We go on these kind of field trips so that the children will have a hands-on experience of what it's like to be on a farm," Pierson said.

In Loudoun County Virginia, there are farms where grapes are grown for use in making wine. Many of the farms let people visit, and drink the wine that is made there. Bill Hatch owns the Zephaniah Farm Vineyard. He holds wine tastings in his home. "We are doubling the number of visitors to our farm every year. We have an average of 250 people on a weekend," Hatch said.

As more people visit farms, more farmers are adding activities in which visitors can take part.

Malcolm Baldwin owns WeatherLea Farm and Vineyard in Loudoun County. Six years ago, he began letting people be married at his farm. They can also sleep at the farm overnight. Mr.

Baldwin says the money he makes from these activities let him keep his small farm operating. "But without the animals, and without the vines, the wedding business wouldn't be as profitable(有利可图的), because people like to see the vines. They like to see the animals and without which I don't think this will be a popular place," Baldwin said.

Rude Gestures in the United States

Every country has its own set of customs and rituals. The United States is no different. Things that may be of no concern to someone in one culture can be rude gestures in the United States. If you have just planned to visit the United States and are unfamiliar with what people consider poor manners, here are the main rude gestures that you will want to avoid.

Consistent tardiness(迟缓) is unacceptable in most areas of the United States. While it is understandable on occasion and possibly in bigger cities, being late shows employees a lack of enthusiasm in their work. Employers want employees to be enthusiastic. They also do not want to waste their day waiting on employees who are not punctual.

Yawning needs to be kept at a bare minimum(最小值). This is considered a rude gesture because it shows a lack of interest in what the speaker has to say. It also may imply a lack of attention. It is unprofessional in the United States, and many employers will dismiss an employee who has issues with sleepiness.

When someone is talking, let them complete their sentence. Interrupting is considered a rude gesture because it shows a lack of attention to what the other speaker is saying. Furthermore, it shows a lack of interest and respect toward the other person. Let your colleague complete his sentence before answering the question.

This is a rude gesture that can be an inconvenience to everyone around you. Avoid picking elements of your face when communicating with other people. Make sure that you bathe at least every other day. People will avoid you if you do not take this advice, and your employer will dismiss you if it is having an impact on the customers. They want a good role model, and a good role model to United States citizens has proper hygiene(卫生).

104. Before going to America, you should .

C. try to learn about American culture

D. know what are bad manners in America

105. We can know from the second paragraph that .

106. The underlined word "punctual" in Paragraph 2 probably means " ".

A. full of energy

B. full of enthusiasm

C. doing something at the wrong time

D. doing something at the correct time

107. People in America probably don't like you .

A. if you communicate with other people often

B. because you refuse to accept others' advice

C. unless you have a habit of good hygiene

D. so you should try to get on well with others

C

Culture Shock

The term, culture shock, describes the anxiety produced when a person moves to a completely new environment. This term expresses the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. The feeling of culture shock generally sets in after the first few weeks of coming to a new place.

We can describe culture shock as the physical and emotional discomfort one suffers when coming to live in another country or place. Often, the way that we lived before is not accepted as or considered as normal in the new place. Everything is different, for example, not speaking the language, not knowing how to use banking machines and so forth.

Although one can experience real pain from culture shock, it is also an opportunity for resetting one's life objectives. It is a great opportunity for learning and acquiring new viewpoints. Culture shock can make one develop a better understanding of oneself.

Culture shock has many stages. The first stage is called the "honeymoon" stage. The new arrival may feel excited as everything is new.

In the second stage, a person may encounter some difficult times in daily life. For example, communication difficulties may occur such as not being understood. There may be feelings of discontent, anger, sadness, and feeling incompetence. This happens when a person is trying to adapt to a new culture. Transition(过渡) between the old methods and those of the new country is a difficult process and takes time to complete.

The third stage is characterized by gaining some understanding of the new culture. One may start to feel a certain psychological balance. The new arrival may start to have a feeling of direction and want to belong.

In the fourth stage, the person realizes that the new culture has good and bad things to offer. The person has a more solid feeling of belonging and starts to set goals for living.

The fifth stage is called the "re-entry shock". This occurs when a return to the country of origin is made. One may find that things are no longer the same. For example, some of the newly acquired customs are not in use in the old culture.

Many factors(因素) contribute to the length and effects of culture shock. For example, the individual's state of mental health, type of personality, previous experiences, familiarity with the language, and level of education. So the five stages are present at different times and each person has their own way of reacting.

108. What do we learn about culture shock?

A. It has negative effect on people.

B. Its effect can differ from person to person.

C. It disappears when people return to their homelands.

D. It can be avoided if one can understand the language.

109. Which stage of culture shock is Tommy in?

Tommy moved to France with his parents two months ago. But now he still can not get used to the life there. He also has problems in schooling. Even worse, he doesn't think anybody cares about him.

A. Stage 2.

B. Stage 3.

C. Stage 4.

D. Stage 5. 110. The main purpose of the passage is to .

A. discuss and clarify

B. argue and advise

C. introduce and explain

D. compare and evaluate

D

A nickname is often a shortened version of a person's name. A nickname also can describe a place or thing. Many American cities have interesting nicknames. These can help establish an identity, spread pride among citizens and build unity.

Chicago, Illinois was once the second largest city in the United States. So, one of its nicknames is "The Second City". Over the years, the population of Chicago has decreased. Today it is the third largest American city.

However, another nickname for Chicago is still true today. It is "The Windy City". Chicago sits next to Lake Michigan, one of North America's Great Lakes. Language expert Barry Popick says on his website that Chicago was called a "windy city" because of the wind that blows off of Lake Michigan. In the 1860s and 1870s, Chicago was advertised as an ideal place to visit in the summer because of this cool wind.

But anyone who has ever lived in Chicago knows how cold that wind can be in winter. The wind travels down the streets between tall buildings in the centre of the city.

Barry Popick says other cities in the central United States called Chicago a "windy city". This meant that people in Chicago liked to brag or talk about how great their city was. They were full of wind or full of hot air. He says newspapers in Cincinnati, Ohio used this expression in the 1870s.

Chicago was an important agricultural, industrial and transportation centre for the country. In 1916, the city gained two more nicknames from a poem called "Chicago", written by Carl Sandburg. Here is the first part of the poem:

Hog Butcher for the World,

Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,

Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler;

Stormy, husky, brawling,

City of the Big Shoulders.

8 Unit 1 A land of diversity-Reading CALIFORNIA California is the third largest state in the USA but has the largest population. It also has the distinction of being the most multicultural state in the USA, having attracted people from all over the world. The customs and languages of the immigrants live on in their new home. This diversity of culture is not surprising when you know the history of California. NATIVE AMERCANS Exactly when the first people arrived in what we now know as California, no one really knows. However, it is likely that Native Americans were living in California at least fifteen thousand years ago. Scientists believe that these settlers crossed the Bering Strait in the Arctic to America by means of a land bridge which existed in prehistoric times. In the 16th century, after the arrival of the Europeans, t he native people suffered greatly. Thousands were killed or forced into slavery. In addition, many died from the diseases b rought by the Europeans. However, some survived these terrible times, and today there are more Native Americans living in California than in any other state. THE SPANISH In the 18th century California was ruled by Spain. Spanish soldiers first arrived in South America in the early 16th century, when they fought against the native people and took their land. Two centuries later, the Spanish had settled in most parts of South America and along the northwest coast of what we now call the United States. Of the first Spanish to go to California, the majority were religious men, whose ministry was to teach the Catholic religion to the natives. In 1821, the people of Mexico gained their independence from Spain. California then became part of Mexico. In 1846 the United States declared war on Mexico, and after the war won by the USA, Mexico had to give California to the USA. However, there is still a strong Spanish influence in the state. That is why today over 40 of Californians speak Spanish as a first or second language. RUSSIANS In the early 1800s, Russian hunters, who had originally gone to Alaska, began settling in California. Today there are about 25,000 Russian-Americans living in and around San Francisco. GOLD MINERS In 1848, not long after the American-Mexican war, gold was discovered in California. The dream of becoming rich quickly attracted people from all over the world. The nearest, and therefore the first to arrive, were South Americans and people from the United States. Then adventurers from Europe and Asia soon followed. In fact, few achieved their dream of becoming rich. Some died or returned home, but most remained in California to make a life for themselves despite great hardship. They settled in the new towns or on farms. By the time California elected to become the thirty-first federal state of the USA in 1850, it was already a multicultural society.
