What: Silent Dinner Parties (SDPs) were dreamed up by artist Honi Ryan as a student in Germany in 2007. The SDP is a normal dinner party, with one huge exception: Guests are asked not to use their voices, not to read or write, to try to make as little noise as possible, and to keep doing that for at least two hours. Ryan says, “It changes all the rules that we have in social situations.”

C Pulling off a bandage is so unpleasant, and for certain patients, it ’s also dangerous. Babies and the elderly have weak skin, and pulling away bandages and medical tape can lead to serious injuries (伤害). In fact, each year, medical tape causes about 1.5 million injuries in the US alone.

“This is a problem that all doctors and nurses know well,” says Jeffrey Karp, a professor at Harvard Medical School. “They are waiting for new inventions that will not cause injuries.” That ’s why Karp and his lab are working on an improvement to make fewer injuries when bandages are removed.

Traditional medical tape is simply something sticky on a backing, but Karp ’s invention has a middle layer (层). This extra layer takes the most force of removing the tape, which avoids injuries. When it ’s time to pull away the bandage, it moves right off. All that ’s left is a small print that can be easily covered or simply rolled off the skin.

Karp ’s tape isn ’t his only invention in medical technology. He wrote an article about a surgical (外科) bandage that could hold fast wounded parts of an operation. Even better, this bandage disappears over time, meaning that doctors never have to go back to remove it. If Karp ’s pain-free bandages come into being as well as his earlier breakthrough, future patients will be much luckier.

As an anger-management specialist, it never stops to surprise me what people get worked up about these days. Mother Teresa got angry about being poor. Widespread hunger made Gandhi’s blood boil. Martin Luther King was fired up by social injustice (不公). Yet many people seem to fly into strong anger at all kinds of small things: trousers that only have small sizes, leaders who have made unimportant mistakes, families reported in the newspapers with ten kids. Are these things really worth the heated anger they seem to cause? Or could it be that we have nothing better to get angry about any more?

Anger, like all emotions, has played a valuable role in human history. The strong anger helped our ancestors live on thousands of years ago. If they’d never been worried about others stealing their food or animals trying to kill them, they wouldn’t have taken necessary action.

In fact, research suggests that the development of our anger response (反应) has been part of our evolution (进化). If we’re shown pictures of angry faces, for example, we’re more excited and then choose something to make us satisfied. So anger makes us get the things we really need.

Anger also helped us work in close social groups. Losing our cool showed that we were displeased with others, and that they needed to make changes to their behaviour.

However, life-threatening (威胁生命的) injustice is less likely to happen in our modern societies. The angry response, which plays no real role in keeping us alive, is still kept in our brain. It leads us to get cross about the smaller, unnecessary things.

Recent examples include a road-anger incident (事件) that left a man dead and a fight that started with two trolleys accidentally running into each other in a supermarket. It seems that anger is becoming a usual communication method.

Part of the problem is that where we were once worried about keeping a roof over our heads and having a warm meal, now all our basic needs are met and our expectations have risen. We expect everything is prefect. When it isn’t, we stamp our feet.

The good news is that if we have known our anger is often over the top, we might be better able to deal with it. We can check the anger in our brain by asking a simple question: is this matter threatening my life? If not, we could forget it—by finding something really worth getting angry with instead.
