Twenty-four trains, nine countries, 13, 500 miles. These are the numbers behind the long train journey one man took from Southampton in the UK to eastern China. Roger Tyers, 37, spent a month on trains and over $2, 500 traveling to Ningbo for research last May. It was the climate crisis (危机), not a love of trains, that made him choose to take the train instead of the plane to China.

Tyers is not the only person to stop air travel because of climate change. Thousands of people worldwide have promised to stop flying, including teenage activist (青年活动家) Greta Thunberg. Activist Maja Rosen started the “Flight Free” movement in Sweden in 2018 in the hope of encouraging 100,000 people not to fly for one year. Although only around 14,000 people joined the movement, Rosen, who stopped flying in 2007, said it had made more people know about the seriousness of the climate crisis and encouraged them to travel by train more often.

According to the study made in May 2019 by Swedish Railways(SJ), 37% of people chose to travel by train instead of by plane whenever possible, compared to 20% at the start of 2018. An SJ spokesperson said, “Rail travel is soaring thanks to climate fears (担忧).” According to Swedavia, a company which runs Sweden’s 10 busiest airports, last year, passenger numbers in July fell by 12% compared to the previous(先前的) year.
