High school was a hard time for me in the beginning because I had just moved to a small town and knew basically no one. I loved to play basketball but was afraid to go to tryout (选拔）for the school's team because I didn't know anyone. One day all that changed when I missed the bus home and decided to shoot baskets on the school playground to kill time. The coach , Mr. Colbath had been watching me make various baskets and was pretty impressed with my moves.

He came up to me and asked me who had taught me to play like that. I told him that my dad had taught me how to play basketball. He asked me if he would see me at the tryout on Friday, but I said no and told him why. He told me to have a try because I played very well and would maybe make some friends on the court. After thinking for a few minutes. I finally decided to have a try.

On the day of the tryout, the coach came, found me and helped me practice before the tryout. He helped me a lot and I did very well at the tryout and many members of the team were quite impressed. I did make the team and over the next few years the coach helped me both on and off the court. He helped me do my math which I had such a difficult time with and he even taught me how to live independently.

I will never forget Mr. Colbath. He really inspired me and changed my life. I would not be the person that I am today if he had not taken such an interest in me when I was in high school.

Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news to older people and to people worried about getting older. Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50，In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.

The findings came from a survey of more than 340,000 adults in the United States. The Gallip Organization questioned them by telephone in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85. The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress(压力).

Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 24 and 25. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.

The study also showed that men and women have similar feeling patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.

Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their feelings. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.

Professor Slone says the emotional patterns(模式）could be linked to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.

The searchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed

or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.

According to a study, about 45 percent of British dog owners believe their pet knows when they are happy or sad and can sense when they are tired or unwell. Perhaps there’s a good reason for that. Unlike many people, pets can be relied on not to tell a secret, which could explain why almost one in ten of those surveyed admitted to trusting their dog with a secret that they would not dare to tell even their closest human friend.

Chris Laurence, who is veterinary director of the Dogs Trust, said，“Dogs are always responsive. If you walk up to a dog and touch it, it will surely purr. If you tickle your dog behind the ears, it will wag its tail. But humans aren’t quite like that.
