阅读下面短文,从每小题的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

When my daughter, Sophie, was admitted to a college, we were very happy, but a little worried about becoming empty nesters. I knew I had to do something to help myself adapt, starting with the summer before she left.

Sophie had a pack of colorful T-shirts. I knew she wouldn’t wear them anymore, so I decided to make a quilt(被子)out of them for her bed at college. It focused my energy, and also let me relive some memories. I tried to work on the quilt when Sophie wasn’t at home---which turned out to be often. She was very busy with her friends. Even when she was around, her door was shut more than usual. I felt a bit hurt. After all, we didn’t have much time together before she went to college, I was already missing her, and she hadn’t ever left yet.

When we arrived at the college, a wave of emotion flooded me. I tried to hold it back, but Sophie saw it in my face. She took a big red book from her bag. “I made this for you, mom,” she said. Then I knew why she had been staying behind a closed door that summer. It was an album of photographs documenting the life of our family over the last 17 years.

I broke into tears. Some of it was sadness at having to let her go, but some of it was joy. I knew that our connection was more powerful than ever, and that we’d always be connected by the strongest of threads, the love that went into every stitch of her quilt and every photo of my album.

In Sophie’s dormitory I unfolded the quilt on her bed. For a mo ment she was speechless. Then she threw her arms around me. “Mom, I love you,” she said. One of her new friends was calling her outside. Sophie turned, and I let her go.

21. What do we learn about Sophie from the passage?

A. She did not understand how her mother felt about her leaving.

B. She had few friends, and kept to hersel f at home that summer.

C. She made a photo album to show her love.

D. She liked her colorful T-shirts very much.

22. According to the second paragraph, why did the author feel hurt?

A. Because Sophie was not interested in what she was doing.

B. Because Sophie had little time for her.

C. Because Sophie was going to leave home for a long time.

D. Because Sophie did not help her to make the quilt.

23. How did the author feel when they arrived at the college?

A. She felt worried.

B. She felt nervous.

C. She was sorry to be leaving her daughter.

D. She missed her daughter very much.

People who show confidence really seem to have it made. They seize more rewarding careers, keep good relations and just see m to do everything with more styles than the rest of us.

So what is the secret? There isn’t one. Self-confidence is a skill and habit that anyone can learn to develop. And although people who are raised in an encouraging environment with confident role models have a hard start in self-confidence development, we all can learn to become more confident at any age.

Try these simple tips for practicing and increasing your self-confidence levels: Dare to fail. Anybody who’s out there bravely performing is going to fail repeatedly. If you are not failing, you are not trying. So don’t take failure too hard or too personally. Just learn to deal with it and use its lessons to keep improving.

When in doubt, pretend you know what you are doing. Because, if you are confident of your abilities, by the time you have done it, you will be experienced.

Dress for success. You don’t have to be beautiful to be confident. Make the most of your own unique physical characters and weaken your disadvantages.

Listen to yourself. You are the only person who knows what’s right for you. Don’t put others’ opinions above your own inner voice.

Build a confident vocabulary. Stop putting yourself down and give up continually blaming your tiny weaknesses. Learn to show up your strong points and the world will learn to see and celebrate them with you.

Pass on the praise. Praise others for their virtues and strengths. This practice will not decrease your confidence, but help increase it.

24. The passage is written mainly _______.

A. to explain the definition of self-confidence

B. to explain the secret of self-confidence

C. to tell people how important self-confidence is

D. to tell people how to build self-confidence

25. The main idea of the sixth paragraph is _______.

A. to be confident means to have no disadvantages

B. taking full advantage of your physical characters will help you be confident

C. your unique characters will help you be confident and be successful

D. to be confident means to be beautiful

26. All the following are tips to increase your self-confidence level EXCEPT ________.

A. not to be afraid of failure

B. dress yourself properly

C. pretend to know everything

D. make your advantages

27. _______ will weaken your self-confidence.

A. Praising others for their strong points

B. Always following others’ advice to do things

C. Giving up blaming your weaknesses

D. Believing in yourself

C

No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation(解释)”of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once.

Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on films, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading o r, best of all, reciting(背诵)it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing”it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “a criticism of life”, and “a heightening(提升)of life”, It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those, who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

28. What is the better way to have a better understanding of a poem?

A. Discussing it with others.

B. Practising reading it aloud.

C. Hearing the poet read out.

D. Analyzing it by oneself.

29. According to the author, one of the purposes of teaching English is getting students _______.

A. to like poetry

B. to criticize life

C. to enjoy life

D. to teach poetry

30. The underlined word “make room” probably means _______.

A. to build a booth

B. to provide equipment

C. to learn a certain amount of time

D. to set aside enough space

31. The passage is mainly about _______.

A. teaching poetry

B. discussing poetry

C. reading a poem

D. reciting a poem

Rocky Lyons was five years old when his mother, Kelly, was driving along the country road with him. He was asleep on the front seat of their truck, with his feet resting on her lap. As his mom drove carefully down the winding country road, she turned onto a narrow bridge. The truck hit a rock and slid off the road. She attempted to bring it back up onto the road by pressing hard on the gas pedal and turning the steering wheel to the left. But Rocky’s foot got caught between her leg and the steering wheel and she lost control of the truck.

The truck fell into a 20-foot ravine(峡谷). When it hit bottom, Rocky woke up. “What happened, Mama?” He asked, “Our wheels are pointing toward the sky.”

Kelly was seriously wounded and blindly by blood. “I’ll get you out, Mama,”announced

Rocky, who had surprisingly escaped injury. He climbed out from under Kelly, slid through the open window and tried to yank(用力拉)his mother out. But she didn’t move.

“Just let me sleep,” begged Kelly, who was out of consciousness. Rocky insisted, “Mom, you can’t go to sleep.”

Rocky managed to push Kelly out of the truck and told her he’d climb up to the road and stop a car to get help. Fearing that no one would be able to see her little boy in the dark, Kelly refused to let him go alone. Instead they slowly moved up to the road. The pain was so great that Kelly wanted to give up, but Rocky wouldn’t let her.

It took 8 hours to rebuild Kelly’s face. She looks quite different today---“I used to have a straight long nose, thin lips and cheekbones; now I’ve got a flat cheeks and much bigger lips” --- but she has few scars and has recovered from her injuries.

Rocky’s heroics were big news. Everyone was surprised at this little boy’s power. “It’s not like I wanted it to happen,”The boy explained, “I just did what anyone would have done.”“ If it weren’t for Rocky, I’d have died,” said his mother.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

So far, educationists have still failed to design anything more efficient(有效的)and reliable than examinations. Some people say examinations test what you know. 36 . They may be a good means of testing memory, or the skills of working rapidly under extreme pressure, but they can tell you nothing about a person’s true ability and talent. 37 .

Then what is a good education? 38 . The examination system does anything but that. The student is encouraged to memorize. Examinations do not motivate a student to read widely, but to restrict his reading; they do not enable him to seek more and more knowledge. Meanwhile, they lower the standards of teaching. 39 . Teachers themselves are often judged by examination results and instead of teaching their subjects, they only train their students in exam techniques.

Are there any simpler and more effective ways of assessing a person’s true abilities?

40 Educationists, of course, should take the responsibility to face the challenge and come up with wise solutions.

A.The answer is ab solutely yes.

B.In a word, it’s not a good education.

C.Your whole future may be decided on one fateful day.

D.Because they deprive(剥夺)the teacher of all freedoms.

E.However, it is common knowledge that they more often do the exact opposite.

F. A good education should, among other things, train you to think for yourself.

G.Examiners are only human: they get tired and hungry; they make mistakes.

六、书面表达(满分25分)

Dear Bill,

I’m glad to receive your letter. I have learned from your letter that you are concerned about the smog which frequently appears in some areas of China. Thank you for your concern. I’m also worried about such terrible weather because it has brought much inconvenience or rather harm to people’s health. Besides, as a result of the terrible air quality, a large number of students have to stay at home during workdays. The efficiency makes both teachers and parents worried a lot, since some students just stayed at home doing nothing but playing computer g ames or watching videos for the whole day.

From my point of view, schools as well as students ourselves should do something to make full use of the time. Since we are living in an information era, schools and teachers can broadcast lessons or provide videos through the Internet. For us students, we should make a timetable everyday and keep ourselves away from computer games, online chatting and so on. Only thus can we make full use of the time at home.

Yours,

Li Hua
