Part II Reading Comprehension (30 points)

Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by five questions. For each question there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question.

Passage One

Wedding ceremonies in the United States vary as much as the people do. But many weddings, no matter where or how they are performed, include certain traditional customs. For instance, the bride and groom often exchanged ring at the ceremony. The rings are usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, and are exchanged in the middle of the ceremony. Today, the ring shows the couple’s love for one another.

After the ceremony, the couple is often showered with handfuls of uncooked rice by friends and family. Rice, as we know, shows productivity and harvest. And then, there is often a party, where the food is so plentiful that it almost takes the attention away from the people. Soon the bride stands in the center of the room, often on a chair, and throws her flowers to the unmarried women at the party. Tradition says that whoever catches the flowers will be the next bride. Some women eagerly try to catch the flower, others shy away.

And then it is time for the bride and groom to set off the tradition of a honeymoon, a trip after the wedding. The trip nowadays varies greatly by wealth, time and preference. Sometimes the couple will spend a single night at a nearby hotel; or they may spend two weeks at a faraway foreign city as well.

Passage Two

When John Milton, writer of "Paradise Lost", entered Cambridge University in 1625, he was already skilled in Latin after seven years of studying it as his second language at St. Pant's School, London. Like all English boys who prepared for college in grammar school, he had learned not only to read Latin but also to speak and write it fluently and correctly. His pronunciation of Latin was English, however, and seemed to have sounded strange to his friends when he later visited Italy.

Schoolboys gained their skill in Latin the hard way. They memorized rules to make learning by heart easier. They first made a word-for-word translation and then an idiomatic translation into English. As they increased their skill, they translated their English back into Latin without referring to the book and then compared their translation with the original. The schoolmaster was always at hand to encourage them. All schoolmasters believed Latin should be beaten in.

After several years of study, the boys began to write composition in imitation of the Latin writers they read. And as they began to read Latin poems, they write poems in Latin. Because Milton was already a poet at ten, his poems were much better than those painfully put together by the other boys. During the seven years Milton spent at the university, he made constant use of his command of Latin. He wrote some excellent Latin poems, which he published among his work in 1645.

A. How John Milton Wrote “Paradise Lost”.

A. The schoolmaster only helped these who were bad at Latin.

B. The schoolmaster usually stood beside the schoolboys with a stick in his hand.

C. The schoolboys could repeat Latin grammar rules from memory.

D. Some of the schoolboys were quick at Latin

19. By saying “Latin should be beaten in” ( Para. 2 ), the writer wishes us to understand that_____

A. schoolboys should be punished if they were lazy

B. schoolboys should be encouraged if they had difficulties

C. schoolboys were expected to master Latin in a short time

D. schoolboys had to study Latin the hard way

20. It may be concluded that ________

Unit 1 Presenting a Speech Road Building Good morning, everyone. Today I'l l be talking about the relationship between road building and the development of the American economy during the 18th century. About 300 years ago, the United States' economy was growing rapidly, mainly because of a booming trade in two important agricultural products: grain and cotton. Grain output in the eastern part of America increased quickly at that time due to the rapidly growing population and the large number of immigrants from Europe. As a result, the demand for grain almost doubled. For this reason, the trade in grain first developed in this part of the country. At the same time, the road system was gradually built up in order to transport the grain from the rural areas to various cities. The road building clearly helped develop the economy quickly in these areas and in the cities as well. During the same period, farmers in the South could get a large amount of laborers from Africa, and they started to grow cotton. As the cotton output increased, the farmers needed to sell it in other places. As a result, many roads were built to link the rural areas to the cities. At first, this trade of grain and cotton took place along the coast, or near rivers and lakes. It took place there because it was easy and cheap to transport goods from one place to another. Before 1700, it was very expensive to move the goods by road.
