1.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I

arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small

suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly

towards the car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I

would want my mother treated."

"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked,

"Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice (临终医院). I don't have any family left. The

doctor says I don't have very long. "

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She

showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop

that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness,

saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence to the address she had given.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked.

"Nothing." I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to

me, but she looked so sad.

A Simple Thank

I have been in the teaching profession more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr. Rowe. I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him.

Mr. Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one her performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. Steven couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He didn’t like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn’t like himself.

The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe’s classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbook onto the floor.

Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: "Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.

So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.

That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. "Hey, Steven," Mr. Rowe commented, "You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!

After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe , his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.

That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and more with each passing day.

Justin and Mary woke up early, even though they were vacationing at their uncle's lake house. The night before, Uncle Thomas told them about the Foggy Figure that haunts (经常出没于) the lake. Justin and Mary were determined to see the ghostly creature before their vacation was over.

"Is it foggy outside?" Mary asked, as Justin carefully looked out the window.

"Yup! Let's go!" Justin let go of the curtain and rushed to the door with Mary.

It was only 5:00 a. m., so everyone else in the house was still asleep. As they moved quietly through the kitchen to the back door, Mary sniffed the air. It had the faint scent (气味) of coffee and something sweet. A sense of hunger struck her. "Maybe we should first have a breakfast, "she thought. But she still followed Justin out the door, down the back steps, and out onto the boat dock (码头). The fog had settled over the lake, making it impossible to see anything.

"Do you see anything?" Mary asked, moving forward for a closer look.

"Nothing. Do you think Uncle Thomas was just trying to scare us with that story?"

Uncle Thomas did have a good imagination. He'd been telling Justin and Mary stories for years, but this was the first scary story. Mary had a feeling it wasn't made up.

Mary shook her head. "Remember what Uncle Thomas said? The Foggy Figure haunts the lake. We're on the dock. Maybe that's why we can't see him. The people in the story were in boats."

"You want to take a boat ride on the water?" Justin asked.

Mary looked around, trying to find Uncle Thomas's boat, but the fog was too thick.

"Mom and Dad will be really angry if we go out on the lake alone in this fog," Justin said.

Mary shrugged (耸肩). "Maybe we don't have to go anywhere. We could sit in the boat while it's docked. That wouldn't be dangerous."

"Okay." Justin moved toward the end of the dock. He could barely see the outline of the boat. "I’ll go first."

We moved on into the jungle-- a forest where large numbers of tall trees and plants grow very close together. Old Mali went in front and I followed close behind him. We stopped for the night about an hour before it began to get dark.

Old Mali lit a fire. When it was bight he showed me how to make a bed with moss(青苔,苔藓).

It was soft and comfortable.

―Mali, how did you learn to make such a bed? I asked.

―I learned to make beds like that, Ma li replied, ―by watching and listening to others. That is the real way to learn anything.

―Will you let me watch you always? I asked Old Mali. ―I want to learn all the things you know about the jungle.

When we had finished our supper, Old Mali got onto his bed and lay down. It was now completely dark. In the fire light, Old Mali seemed to be fast asleep on his bed. I suddenly felt alone and afraid.

All day in the jungle, while we had been walking, I had heard noises of animals. Now they seemed to be much nearer. The jungle was now a wall of blackness in the light of the fire.

I felt frightened and suddenly my mouth went dry. I wanted to scream. I felt my mouth opening wide, ready to scream as loud as possible.

But I did not scream. I saw Old Mali’s face i n the firelight. This made me feel ashamed. I held my teeth tightly together to stop myself from screaming. I lay down and closed my eyes.

As soon as I closed my eyes. I heard a thousand noises. The whole jungle became alive with animals moving quietly and carefully all around me. Suddenly Old Mali took a deep breath and made a noise. I was hearing so many imaginary noise and the real noise made by Old Mali gave me a terrible fright.

I opened my eyes and jumped out of bed. I pulled my knife out and held it above my head.

"Hey!" the voice called from behind me. "Are you a girl or a duck?" I ignored the comments because I knew they were from the mean gir1, Betsy. I ran to my class, causing my slight limp(跛行)to become even more apparent. Already, I could see that things would be different here. At my old school, I had a group of friends to protect me. However, in this new school, I was on my own. I took my place in the first row of desks and I was grateful for alphabetic seating. My last name came at the beginning of the alphabet and Betsy’s last name came at the end. As the weeks went on, though, I made friends with two girls named Fran and Lisa who sat near me in class. Whenever Betsy made one of her remarks, they would wave it off and tell me to ignore her.

Still, I hated that I didn’t walk like everyone else. I didn’t like not being able to run as fast or as straight as the other kids and I didn’t like getting picked last for teams in gym class. Mostly, though, I really hated it when people like Betsy made negative remarks about how I walked.

One day, our teacher asked us to change seats. "Class," our teacher addressed us one morning, "you’ve been in the same seats for a full semester and you’ve become friendly with the students around you. Now it’s time to change seats and make some new friends." The class let out a collective moan(抱怨). As she assigned the new seating, Fran, Lisa, and I looked at each other and waited for our names to be called. We didn’t want to be separated. And we especially didn’t want to sit anywhere near Betsy. Finally, Betsy sat directly behin d me.

I knew this wasn’t going to be good and I soon discovered I was right. Betsy often leaned into my back: "Quack, quack!" When I ignored her, she kicked my seat. When that didn’t work, she poked(戳)me. This went on daily until one morning I simply refused to go to school. I told Mom what had happened at school.

Dad pushed his finger into my basket. "What’s that?"he asked. "Mew, "said the basket.

Dad suddenly pulled his hand away. "Oh no," he said. "Not a cat. No way. "

I pulled Checkers from the basket. "It’s not a cat. It’s a k itten. Can I keep him? Please?"

Dad frowned for a minute, thinking. Then he rubbed Checkers under the chin(下巴). "You’ll have to take good care of him. "

I hugged Checkers. "I will, "I promised. he won’t be any trouble at all." And Checkers wasn’t—until he grew into a cat. He wanted to be the first one in the house- and the first one out of the house. Sometimes he blocked dad in the way. "That cat!"Dad complained. Checkers climbed onto our roof. He had no trouble getting down. Usually he aimed for Dad. "That cat!" Dad yelled. Checkers flushed the toilet and watched the water circle away. "That

cat!"Dad was almost mad. Checkers hid in strange places. He liked to surprise people.

One day he hid under the couch(睡椅). Dad walked by with a glass of orange juice. Checkers jumped out. He curled around Dad’s ankle and attacked Dad’s toes. Orange juice spilt all over the floor. Dad yelled and put Checkers outside. "Get out of my way, cat!" he said angrily. And he slammed the door.

Dad washed the injured toes and peeled open a bandage. He wrapped it around his big toe, and then he opened four more for his ankle.

I watched from the window. Checkers looked frustrated as he walked down the road.

"I’m sorry Checkers scratched you, "I said. "He was just playing. He didn’t mean to hurt you."

"Don’t worry, "said Dad. "That cat will be back. "

After supper I called for Checkers. But Checkers didn’t come. Nighttime came. I called and called. I knocked his food dish with a spoon loudly. But still no Checkers. I left the porch light on. But the next morning Checkers still wasn’t there.

I carried a picture of Checkers to all the neighbors. I drew posters and hung them all over. But nobody found Checkers.

Days went by. Life wasn’t the same without that cat. I was angry with Dad. I didn’t think he missed Checkers at all.

Then one night the phone rang.

The eight-year-old Carol lived with her father David, Mother May and elder brother Rob. The little family happily lived in a beautiful village surrounded with beautiful nature. The village was at the foot of a mountain, with beautiful views of the snowy mountain. The family survived on growing seasonal plants and trees. Their life is totally surrounded by nature and beauty.

While they lived a very happy life, Carol did not love the beautiful atmosphere of the village. She really wanted to move into the city and enjoy the city life. She wanted to shop, move around the city, watch movies, and eat in fantastic restaurants and cafes, etc.

However, there was hardly any chance that Carol’s family moved to the city as they had everyth ing in the village.

One day, Carol fell asleep during the early noon and she had a sound sleep. Of course, she had a strange dream. She saw her grandmother in her dream as a fairy and her deceased grandmother granted her a wish. Carol requested her that she should love to enjoy the city life as she always desired.

Grandmother understood the desire of Carol, but still wanted to convince her that the peaceful village life is better than the city life.

She told Carol, "Baby, you cannot have access to fresh fruits and vegetables from plants as you have at your home. You cannot breathe fresh air. You cannot play with animals. You can hardly find any trees. You will not find peace as you see here! Do you still want to go to the city?"

Without hearing the concerns, Carol asked her grandmother to grant the wish. Grandmother granted her wish, but with a condition. Carol was told that she would only have 6 hours to spend in the city. Later, she would return to the village. Carol agreed.

It was Christmas Day. Pappy was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Pappy’s family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door, Pappy had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell, he left the backroom to greet his customer.

"And how can I help you, little lady?" Pappy’s voice was j oyful.

"Hello, sir." The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Pappy with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him, "I’d like to buy a present, sir."

"Well, let’s see," Pappy said, "who is this present for?"

"My grandpa. It’s for my grandpa. But I don’t know what to get."

Pappy began to make suggestions. "How about a pocket watch? It’s in good condition." The little girl didn’t answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Pappy’s face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with excitement.

"This is just right," the little girl said. "Momma says grandpa loves music."

Just then, Pappy’s expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl’s heart, he told her, "I’m sorry, Missy. That’s not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio."

The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed, "No, I don’t think so."

In an effort to help her understand, Pappy told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

My mother was a supporter of physical punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked (打屁股) my

siblings and me only once. Instead she found ways of punishment that left a more lasting memory than giving us a spanking. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was for.

In the early 70’s my mother attended college during the day and I was in daycare. One day at day care watched

an extremely tired mother attempt to pick up her daughter. The little girl asked, "Momma, are we going to McDonald’s for dinner?"The mother replied, "Honey, not tonight. Momma has to run a few errands (差事) and then

we have to go home and cook dinner for Daddy." "But I wanna go." "Susie, I said not tonight. Maybe, if you are a

good girl, we can go tomorrow." Susie immediately dropped to the floor, kicking and screaming, "I want to go to McDonald’s."

No amount of pleading (恳求)or scolding her moth er tried stopped Susie’s tantrum (发脾气) Finally her

mother gave in, "Okay, Susie, let’s go to McDonald’s. "Susie stopped yelling and smiling she grabbed her mother’s

hand and they left. To say I was amazed would be inaccurate;I was delighted that anything I wanted could be had

by throwing a tantrum.

That day my mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to a store to purchase some Christmas items. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way

to the counter, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on

a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I asked, "Mama, can I have that telephone?"

She replied, "Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl, maybe Santa will bring it to you." "But Mama, I want

that telephone right now. "Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. "Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave, you can have a spanking."

Three boys and three girls were going to the beach. When they boarded the bus, they were carrying sandwiches and wine, dreaming of golden beaches. Suddenly, they noticed Vingo. He sat in front of them, eyes

fixed upon a photo, completely in silence.

Deep into the night, the bus pulled into Howard Johnson’s, a service area, and everybody got on except Vingo.

The young people began to wonder about him. When they came back, one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself. "Want some wine?" she said. He smiled and took a swig from the bottle. He thanked her and

became silent again.

The next morning, they awoke outside ano ther Howard Johnson’s, and this time Vingo went in. The girl

insisted that he join them. He ordered black coffee and some cookies. When they returned, the girl sat with Vingo

again. After a while, slowly and painfully, he began his story. He had been in prison for the past four years, and

now he was going home.

"Are you married?"

"I don’t know. "

"You don’t know?" she said.

"Well, when I was in prison I wrote to my wife, " he said, "I told her that I was going to be away for a long

time, and that if she c ouldn’t stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, and if it hurt her too much, she could just

forget me. I’d understand. Get a new guy, I said. She’s a wonderful woman. I told her she didn’t have to write me.

And she didn’t. Not for three and a half yea rs. "

"And you’re going home now, not knowing?"

"Yeah. Well, last week, we was sure the parole(假释) was coming through, I wrote her again. We used to live

in Brunswick and there’s a big oak(橡树) tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she didn’t have a new

man and if she’d take me back, she should put yellow handkerchief on the tree and I’d get off and come home. If

she didn’t want me, forget it—no handkerchief and I’d go on through. "

"Wow, " the girl exclaimed, "Wow, "

She told the others, and soon all of them were in it.

To celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday, Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central Oreg on to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed, along with his dreams for the future: His backpack and computer were gone.

"Everything important to me was on that computer," said Fortune, 21, who is studying to become a paramedic (护理人员). "My classwork, every paper I’d written, and all the programs I needed for my paramedic tests. Every letter I was working on for job applications. I felt sick."

Two days after the theft, another young man was standing outside his apartment, also in Portland. Masoud Almazrouei, 29, was an exchange student from the United Arab Emirates. He had been approached by a man who said he had a computer for sale. Only $200. Almazrouei, who had been in the United States for only a year, admits now that he was naive (天真). But he needed a computer, so he bought it, took it home, and turned it on. Within seconds, he saw files and photographs.

"I wondered who would sell a computer with all of this on it," he said. "I realized it could be stolen." Almazrouei found what appeared to be the owner’s cell phone number and called it.

"This guy with a thick accent told me he had my computer," Fortune said. "He told me the story and said it was his fault. I thought it was a scam (骗局). I told him if he really had the computer, he should take it to the police." Soon after, a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer off and had said he was sorry. He passed along the man’s number.

There was once a beautiful town and a couple of lovers would often stay together on the top of the mountain enjoying the sunrise and by the sea appreciating the sunset. Everyone who knew them could not help envying them for their happy love.

But one day,the man was severely injured and lying in bed in hospital for several days without any consciousness(意识). The woman guarded him by the bed in daytime, calling his name nonstop while at night, she would go to the church and pray to God until her tears ran up.

A week passed by and the man was still sleeping. One day,God was finally moved by her love and persistence and would like to do her a special favor.

God said,"I can help your lover recover quickly on the condition that you should promise to be a butterfly for three years. Do you agree with the deal?" She said excitedly and firmly,"Yes,I do! I won’t regret doing that."

The next day,the woman became a beautiful butterfly, flying hurriedly to the hospital. It turned out that the man came to his consciousness and waked up,talking with a doctor. She could not hear what they were talking about because she could not fly into the house. What she could do was watch her beloved through the windows helplessly.

Another spring came and the butterfly was in a hurry to fly back to see the man, only to realize that there was a pretty lady standing by him. At that moment, she was so shocked that she almost fell down from the sky. She could hardly believe her eyes.

People were talking about that the man was seriously ill during Christmas and that the pretty and cute female doctor took good care of him and that finally they fell in sweet love.

The butterfly felt heart-stricken(悲痛欲绝的). In the following days, she often saw the man take the woman to the top of the mountain to enjoy the sunrise and to the seaside to enjoy the sunset together.

"What’s wrong with you, dear?" said Granny Bell to a little boy, who sat near a wall at the back of the house. He had a book in his hand, and tears were in his eyes.

"We have all got a poem called Little Jim to learn," said the boy, whose name was Tom Blair, "and the one who says it best is to get a prize from the master. But I don’t think I can learn it."

"Why not?" said Granny Bell.

"The boys say that I can’t, and that I need not try," said Tom in a sad tone.

"Don’t mind what the boys say. Let them see that you can learn it," said his friend.

"But I don’t think I can," said Tom; "it is so long, and some of the words are so hard. I know I need not try for the prize. But I should like to learn the poem as well as I can; for the boys laugh at me, and call me ‘Slow Tom.’"

"Well, dear," said Granny Bell, in a kind voice, "if y ou are slow, and can’t help it, try to be ‘slow and sure,’ as they say. Look at the snail (蜗牛)on the wall; how slow it is! And yet, if you watch it, you will see it will get to the top in time. So just try to learn a few lines each day, and you may gain the prize in the end. And when you feel like losing heart, think of the snail on the wall."

When Granny Bell had said this, she went on her way. And Tom thought that, though he could not keep up with the boys, he might run a race with the snail. So he determined to try to learn his task by the time the snail got to the top of the wall.

It was one o’clock in the morning. In the Rivesville town art gallery, a window opened and a man came in. His name was Harry Black, and he was a thief. It was dark in the art gallery, but Harry had a light. He looked across the room at a painting.

"There it is!" he said.

Harry moved quickly across the room. He stood and looked at the painting.

"A million dollars for this?" he thought. "I don’t understand it."

But he took a knife from his coat. Then he took the painting very, very slowly from its frame. Harry went back across the room to the window, but he walked into a table. There was a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It fell on the floor and broke into pieces. He ran across the piece of glass to the window.

Harry rented a room in Mrs. Allen’s house. He went quietly up to his room and closed the door. In his room, Harry took the painting from his bag. He wrapped it with a newspaper and put the newspaper under his bed.

In the morning, Janey Allen was putting old bottles into a box. On the TV, a reporter was at the Rivesville art gallery. He was talking about the lost painting and the broken glass vase. Janey glanced at the photo of the blue vase.

At that time Harry wasn’t in his room. He was talking on his telephone. Janey was looking for old newspapers. Every Friday morning, she took them from every room in the house. Then later, the newspaper recycling truck arrived.

Janey opened Harry’s door and looked into his room. She always took his old newspapers or bottles for rec ycling. She found a newspaper under Harry’s bed. She put the old newspapers into a black recycling box. Then she ran from the house and saw the truck. "Wait!" she said. And she quickly gave the box to one of the men.

Harry came back to the house. He saw the recycling truck, and he was Janey.

"The newspaper——!Oh, no!" Harry said.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giv ing milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose everything. It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the best miracle I have ever seen in my life.

I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn’t walking with his usual steps. He was obviously walking with great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill(溅出) the water he held in them. I stepped close as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much greater purpose, I thought. As I came closer, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them, at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck (雄鹿) was dangerously close. But the buck neither threatened him nor even moved as Billy knelt down. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lifting its head with great effort to lap (舔) up the water cupped in my boy’s hands.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow(乌鸦)perched on the tree near their window.

The father asked his son, "What is this? " The son replied, "It is a crow."

After a few minutes, the father asked his son the second time, "What is this?" The son said, "Father, I have just now told you It’s a crow’. "

After a little while, the old father again asked his son the 3rd time, "What is this? "

At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒) was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father unwillingly. "It’s a crow, a crow." A little while after, the father again asked his son the fourth time, "What is this?"

This time, the son shouted at his father, "Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?"

A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.

On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.

When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:

"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son.

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options (选择): becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t inter ested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle, one of the ciders in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense (紧张的) environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed. A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, "Some people are fighting! Let's go and have a look!" But Henry refused, "It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."

"You are a coward, and afraid to go," said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.

But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.

Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.

To celebrate his girlfriend’s birthday, Luke Fortune drove from a small town in Central Oregon to Portland, where he parked his car in a paid garage overnight. The next morning, he discovered that the car’s window had been smashed, along with his dreams for the future: His backpack and computer were gone.

"Everything important to me was on that computer," said Fortune, 21, who is studying to become a paramedic (护理人员). "My classwork, every paper I’d written, and all the programs I needed for my para medic tests.

I told him if he really had the computer, he should take it to the police."

Soon after, a police officer called Fortune to say that a man had dropped the computer off and had said he was sorry. He passed along the man’s number.

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, carrier, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit(追寻)of the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life. Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.

Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night The funeral(葬礼)is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel(新闻短片)as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.

"Jack, did you hear me?"

"Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. I t’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago," Jack said.

"Well, he didn’t forget you.Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d reminisce(回忆)about the many days you spe nt over ‘his side of the fence’ as he put it," Mom told him.

"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said.

"You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life," she said.

"He’s the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn’t be in this business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things that he thought were important Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral." Jack said.

Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before he had to return home. Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture... Jack stopped suddenly.

"What’s wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.

"The box is gone," he said.

"What box?" Mom asked.

"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’," Jack said.

It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.

"Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said sadly.

2016年浙江新高考英语题型解读—概要写作 一、2016年浙江新高考《考试说明》英语写作样题 第二节:概要写作(满分25分) 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。 Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is no thing fixed about attitudes to dirt. In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block o ut disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up t he skin and let ills in. A particular danger was though to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 15 46. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a frie ndly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman h ad taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman sho uld not go out. Though the belief in the merit (好处) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been re garded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18 century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning awa y dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of pre venting disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter th an white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too f ar? Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of diseas e. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist (免疫学家), encourages ch ildren to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter (后者) positi on is gaining some ground.

山川又可以细分为:forest, mountains, caves, islands and volcanoes, paths, rivers, sea。

高频短语–名词和形容词 * Magnificent forest of tall trees高大的森林 * Like a crowd of vivid green umbrellas像一群鲜艳的绿色雨伞* Emerald /?em(?)r?ld/ green leaves翠绿的叶子 * Vivid green stems鲜艳的绿色茎 * Like fluttering, emerald ribbons像飘动的翡翠丝带 * Blazing carpet of bluebells耀眼的风信子 * Red and orange berries红色和橙色浆果
