第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40 分)

第一节(共15 小题;每小题2 分,满分30 分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Sharon, Aged 22

The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to.

Frank, Aged 21

I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!

Eddie, Aged 20

When I started high school I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone, I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will bee easier before you know it.

David, Aged 19

I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening(令人恐惧的). But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

21. What can we infer from Sharon about high school?

A. Teachers are quite strict.

B. Students often stay up at night.

C. Teachers provide little care for students.

D. Students should make good use of their time.

22. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school?

A. Excited.

B. Bored.

C. Worried.

D. Relaxed.

23. Who mentions the importance of friends?

A. Frank.

C. Sharon.

D. Eddie.

Football is my favorite sport. I loved to watch it, but I had never played in a football game before I went to college. I lacked self-confidence and I doubted if I could do well in a team, which was why I hardly did sports together with others.

I just loved practicing playing football in the backyard of our house.

About one month after I went to college, one day some of my classmates said they’d play a football game with some players of another class. I really looked forward to it but never thought I’d join them to play. That day finally came and I went to watch with my classmates. However, just about ten minutes after the game started, one member of our football team got injured and could no longer play. The other members looked worried. Then one of them ca me to me and asked, “Can you play?” At first, I shook my head. But then I nodded. “Great! e and play,” he said. I followed him, having no idea at all what to do. To my joy, he asked me to play in defense (防守). Defense was my favorite because I found it more fun and less plicated (复杂的). Then the game began again. There weren’t a lot of big kids on the offensive line (攻击线) of the other team and I suddenly gained some self-confidence. About five minutes later, the ball was kicked toward the guard. I thought it was a good opportunity for me. I quickly ran past the guard and got the ball. When the guard came to the offensive line I kicked the ball. I scored and all my classmates cheered. You may not believe it, but I scored twice that time. The final score was 6-2 and we won. My teammates thought that I did very well and none of them believed I hadn’t played in a game before.

That game really changed me. I am a really confident person now and often play football games with my teammates.

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be swimming, skiing, or playing football. It may be mountaineering as well.

Those who like to climb high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with surprise. Why are people willing to suffer cold and difficulties to take risks on high mountains? This surprise is caused probably by the differences bet ween mountaineering and other forms of activities to which people give their relaxation. Mountaineering is a sport, not a game. There are no strict rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from these rules that makes mountaineering attractive (有吸引力的) to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

If we pare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a "team game". We should be mistaken about this. There are, it is true, no "matches" between "teams" of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

Mountain climbers know that they may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than men. They have to fight the forces of nature. This sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

A mountain climber continues to improve in skills year after year. It is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. He may take more time than younger men, but he probably climbs with more skill and less

waste of effort, and he certainly experiences equal enjoyment.

28. The main difference between a sport and a game lies in ______.

A. names

B. uniforms

C. rules

D. skills

29. Mountaineering can be called a team sport because ______.

A. mountaineers depend on each other while climbing

B. teams pete against each other

C. it is an Olympic event

D. there are five climbers on each team

30. Mountaineers pete against ______.

A. each other

B. nature

C. other teams

D. mental and physical qualities

31. Which of the following might be the best title?

A. How to Climb High Mountains

B. Mountain Climbers

C. Challenging (挑战性的) Sports Activities

D. Mountaineering

In the early days of human history, people lived by hunting wild animals, or gathering wild grains and plants for food. Then, some people learned to grow crops and raise animals for food. They were the first farmers.

Since the sixteenth century, the word farm has meant agricultural land. But a much older meaning of the word farm is linked to economics. The word farm es from the Latin word, firma, which means an unchanging payment.

Experts say the earliest meaning of the English word farm was a yearly payment made as a tax or rent.

Farmers in early England did not own their land. They paid every year to use agricultural lands.

Beans are a popular farm crop. But beans are used to describe something of very little value in the expression, not worth a hill of beans. The expression is often used today. You could say, for e xample, that a bad idea is not worth a hill of beans.
