2015 Was a Warm, Wild Year. What’s Next?

2015 saw things heat up and get out of hand, and not just in

politics.

A record warm December raised average temperatures

enough to make 2015 the second hottest year on record in the

contiguous United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climate Monitoring Annual Report, which was released Thursday.

The United Nations had previously reported that 2015 was shaping up to be the warmest year on record for the whole planet.

Last year was also the third wettest on record in the U.S. and saw ten weather- or climate-related disasters that each caused at least $1 billion in damage in the U.S. and killed a total of 155 people. These include a drought, two floods, five severe storms, a wildfire, and a winter storm.

The average U.S. temperature was 54.4°F, 2.4°F above the 20th century average, and second only to 2012's record warmth. This was also the 19th consecutive(连续的) year with average temperatures above the average for the century.

Every state reported above-average annual temperatures. The warming was particularly pronounced across most of the eastern half of the country in December, when many places saw temperatures 30 degrees above normal and many records were set.

This mirrored changes seen in the Arctic that month, when temperatures spiked to 50 degrees above normal. Part of this warming was driven by a strong El Ni?o, or periodic warming in the Pacific Ocean, but some of it can also be attributed to global warming, says meteorologist Eric Holthaus, who was not involved with the federal report.

The analysis comes less than a month after the U.S. and 194 other countries signed an agreement in Paris to more aggressively fight the effects of climate change.

“Even if all the initial targets in Paris are met, we’ll only be part of the way there when it comes to reducing carbon from the atmosphere,” said President Barack Obama at the time. Still, the agreement represented “a turning point” by setting up “the architecture" for doing so, he said. NOAA's climate monitoring center doesn't issue predictions for future weather, but the agency's Climate Prediction Center does. That team's forecast for the next three months calls for warmer-than-average temperatures in much of the country, although parts of Texas and the Southeast may be a little cooler than usual. As Lancaster University Professor Gail Whiteman told the Weather Channel, "climate change means extreme weather is the new normal."

A few things to consider before booking a flight

With fuel costs rising and airlines finding more fees to

impose(强加) on travelers every day, airfare isn’t getting any

cheaper. Since you can’t drive to all your dream destinations,

flying is the only way to go sometimes and, undeniably, the fastest. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to find the most affordable fares and also avoid paying as many extra charges as possible when you plan ahead.

Getting the best fare

Airlines put out their fare sales on Tuesday morning, making this day the best day to book a flight for less.

Fly during the least popular times. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are the slowest days to fly, which means cheaper deals than the rest of the week. You can also find reduced rates on early morning flights, since ma ny people don’t like to get up before the sun to get to the airport. Earlier boarding times can also considerably cut down your chances of getting bumped on an overbooked flight or delayed because of other delayed flights or mechanical issues.

Choose your seat later. Some airlines charge you to pick your seat when you book online, adding even more to the bottom line of your ticket cost. If you show up early on your travel day, you can still get suitable seats. Some of the best seats get held back until flight day, unless others are willing to pay extra for them ahead of time, so you still have the chance at one of those.

Fly on holidays. You already know that summer is the most expensive time to fly, and even though most other times are more affordable, the days surrounding holidays can be crazy. Save big if you’re willing to travel on major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Don’t wait until the last-minute to book. Many travelers don’t know that there’s a sweet spot for booking and getting the best price on your tickets. Book too early or too late and you could end up paying more than you need to. The best time to book is between three months and six weeks from when you want to travel.

Avoiding extra fees

Airlines will charge for just about anything these days. Some have even toyed around with charging customers for using the restroom. All those extra fees can certainly add up, but there’s no reason to pay them if you don’t have to. Here are some tips to keep money in your wallet once you get to the airport.

Avoid the upgrade it's not necessary. Sometimes upgrades are free, but mostly you will be charged for seeking a last-minute bump to first class, and the cost can be hefty.

Fly carry-on only. Baggage fees vary wildly, but almost all airlines charge them and charge big. Why pay for your clothes to fly with you? If everyone in your travel party checks a bag, your bill can be astronomical before you ever even get to your destination. It’s easy to reduce the amount of stuff you pack: Make sure all your clothing coordinates, so you can take less and still make more outfit combinations, take only two pair of shoes, plan to do

a bit of laundry on your trip and bring only travel-sized toiletries.

Pack your own snacks. Unless you’re flying internationally, it’s rare your flight comes with a free meal. Snacks on the plane are not cheap and almost never healthy. Don’t rely on what’s on the small menu and instead tuck some of your own snacks into your bag and eat a lot better, and cheaper, than other passengers.

Do you have a tried and true method of getting the best deal on your flights? Let us know.

The relationship between exercise and cancer has long

both interested and puzzled oncologists and exercise

physiologists.

Exercise is strongly associated with lowered risks for

many types of cancer. In epidemiological(流行病学)studies,

people who regularly exercise generally prove to be much less likely to develop or die from the disease than people who do not. At the same time, exercise involves biological stress, which typically leads to a short-term increase in inflammation(炎症)throughout the body. Inflammation can contribute to elevated risks for many cancers.

To try to better understand how exercise can both elevate inflammation and simultaneously protect the body against cancer, scientists at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and other institutions decided to closely examine what happens inside mice at high risk for the disease. They began by gathering a group of adult lab mice. These animals generally like to run.

The scientists then implanted(植入)melanoma skin cancer cells into the mice before providing half of them with running wheels in their cages while the other animals remained sedentary. After four weeks, far fewer of the runners had developed full-blown melanoma than the sedentary mice and those that had been diagnosed with the disease showed fewer and smaller lesions. They also were less prone to metastases(转移), even if scientists injected some of the cancer cells into their lungs to stimulate metastases.

In effect, running seemed to have at least partially protected the mice against the cancer. Scientists then drew blood from both the exercising and sedentary animals and cells from any tumors in both groups. Then they looked microscopically at how the various samples were different. As expected, they found much higher levels of the hormone adrenaline in the blood of the exercising animals. They also found higher levels of interleukin-6 in the blood of the runners, a substance that is released by working muscles and is believed to both increase and decrease inflammation in the body capriciously. Perhaps most important, they found much higher numbers of natural killer cells in the bloodstreams of runners.

In the follow-up experiments, they injected the runners with a substance that blocked the production of adrenaline and gave sedentary animals large doses of added adrenaline. What

they now saw was that when running mice could not produce adrenaline, they developed cancer at the same rate as the sedentary animals, while the sedentary animals that had been injected with extra adrenaline fought off their tumors better than other sitting mice.

The scientists determined that adrenaline seemed to be sending biochemical signals to some of the animals’ IL-6 cells, making them physiologically more alert, so that when a tumor began to develop in the affected animal, those IL-6 cells in turn activated the natural killer cells in the bloodstream and actually directed them to the tumors.

With these results, “we show that volun tary wheel running in mice can reduce the growth of tumors, and we have identified an exercise-dependent mobilization(动员)of natural killer cells as the underlying cause of this protection,” said Pernille Hojman, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen who oversaw the new study.

But mice, obviously, are not people, and it is impossible to know from this study whether a similar process occurs in humans, although exercise, particularly moderately intense exercise such as jogging, has been shown to increase adrenaline and the production of natural killer immune cells in people, Dr. Hojman said. “So the mechanisms,” she said, that seemed to partially protect the running mice in this study from malignancies, “can also happen in people,” perhaps providing one more incentive, if we still need it, to get up and move.

50.Which of the following sentences from the passage best concludes the main idea of Paragraph 2?

A. “The relationship between exercise and cancer has long both interested and puzzled

oncologists and

exercise physiologists.”

B. “… exercise can both elevate inflammation and simultaneously protect the body

against the cancer.”

C. “…running seemed to have at least partially protected the mice against the cancer.”

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an

embarrassment.

She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old

clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed.

Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed that I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “your mom only has one eye?!” and taunted me.

I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, “Why don’t you have the other eye?! You’re only going to make me a laughingstock!” My mom did not respond, I guess I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have had said what I wanted to say. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.

That night I woke up, and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. My mom was crying there, so quietly, as if she was afraid that she might wake me. I took a look at her, and then turned away. For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty. I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later I got accepted by the Seoul University, I left my mother and came to Seoul to study. Then I got married there.

I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. Now I am living happily as a successful man. I enjoy the life in Seoul because it’s a place that doesn’t remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door. It was my mom! And still with her one eye! It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye.

I screamed at her, “Who are you?I don’t know you! How dare you come to my house and scare my daughter! Get out of here now!” To this, my mom quietly answered, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address,” and she disappeared out of sight. I was quite relieved.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. Lying to my wife that I was going on a business trip, I went back to participate in the reunion. After that, I went down to the old shack, which I used to call a house, just out of curiosity. There I found my mom fallen on the cold ground, but I did not shed a single tear. She had a piece of paper in her hand. It was a letter to me.

My son,

I think my life has been long enough now, and I won’t visit Seoul anymore. But would it

be too much to ask if I wanted you to come to visit me once in a while?I miss you so much.

And I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion. But I decided not to go to the school. I’m so sorry that I only have one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you. You see, when you were very little, you got into an accident and lost your eye. As a mom, I couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up with only one eye. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that eye. I was never upset at you for anything you did. During the couple of times that you were angry with me, I thought to myself, it’s because he loves me. I miss the times when you were still young around me. I miss you so much. You mean the world to me.

My World Shattered. I hated the person who only lived for me. I cried for My Mother, but I didn’t know of any way that will make up for my worst deeds.

55. Why did the mother cry quietly after her visit to the son at school that night?

第二节:下面文章中有5处(第61-65题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项中选出符合各段意思的小标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。

(原创,文章出处:

https://www.wendangku.net/doc/cf14323807.html,/opinion/2015-06/29/content_21110707.htm A. )

A. It's okay to look lost.

B. Don't take it personally.

C. learn a few handy phrases

D. Get ready to get pushed around.

E. Hopefully you don't mind sharing food.

F. Don't be afraid to smile and make a new friend.

For our US blogger, who goes by the online moniker kellivschina, it is hard to capture in words exactly what it is like to live in China, since life here seems different in many ways from her home country. But she still came up with 5 tips to summarize her Chinese experiences.

61. ______________________

In America we have this mindset that to show weakness is a bad thing. Don't ask for help—be independent! (After all, that's what America is all about, right? INDEPENDENCE!!) The truth is that there's going to come a time in China when you need help. The great thing about China is that if you ask the way, I can almost guarantee that within three minutes you will have a whole crowd of well-meaning Chinese people trying to help you.

62. ______________________

It's no secret that China has a lot of people. Whenever you're in a public place, especially if it's during a holiday (which, by the way, happens frequently), you should know that it will be crowded. You might get shoved around a little (or a lot). Oh, and even if you've gotten a spot in line, don't be surprised if people cut in front of you or completely ignore the idea of a line altogether.

63. ______________________

About 90% of the time, the first question a Chinese person asks you will be "Which country are you from?" If you can't say anything else, at least learn the name of your country. It will put a very satisfied smile on the asker's face when you respond. Other phrases that I found very useful when I first came were "sorry", "it's okay," and "where is…?"

64. ______________________

Lots of Westerners (me included) are shocked when they get an elbow in their face without an apology or see toddlers pointing at them and yelling "waiguoren ("foreigner!"). It can also be very uncomfortable when a Chinese person you hardly know starts asking you personal questions, such as how much money you make or if you're married (not to mention the very direct comments about your appearance). The Chinese people are not trying to be rude. Apparently these things are acceptable in their culture.

65. ______________________

One of the biggest surprises for me was the "family style" meal in China. Rather than

ordering your own plate of food at a restaurant, generally your table will be loaded with dishes that everyone shares. If you're that person who always got mad at others for "double dipping", you'd better get over that fast.

I really enjoy go to the movies with my friends on weekend. I usually check the movie listings in the newspaper to see what is about. I also check the movie reviews so I don’t want to see a bad movie. I like to arrive earlily at the movie theater so we don’t have to stand in the line for too long to buy tickets. If tickets for the movie we want to see have sold out, we will buy a ticket for a late showing. I like eating anything during a movie and usually I choose a middle seat.

五、书面表达

(Sample Writing 1, 126 words)

As far as I’m concerned, high school students should take on part-time jobs, which will definitely benefit them a lot.

In addition to skills acquired from the jobs, students learn some social skills. Also, it’s very likely that their future jobs will be chosen from the part-time jobs they have done before. Secondly, students will become more independent. Their ability to deal with problems will get greatly improved when something unexpected occurs during the work. Finally, working part-time provides students with a good chance to communicate with people from all walks of life. They can

learn something new and interesting, which could never be learnt in school books.

I’m sure working part-time is a way to enrich their life as well as earn some pocket money.

(Sample Writing 2, 126 words)

I vote against the idea that high school students should take on a part-time job. The reasons are listed as follows.

Above all, they should give priority to study. A part-time job requires time and energy, which will certainly have a negative influence on their study. Besides, those who take part-time jobs don’t have enough time to rest as their weekend is usually spent working. How can they carry on study with a tired body? I t’s a good rest that they’re badly in need of. Finally, parents show great concern for those working part time. They’re worried that their kids are easy to get hurt in real society.

Though taking a part-time job can help us learn more about society, I think my choice is better.

【英语】高考英语阅读理解练习题及答案

【英语】高考英语阅读理解练习题及答案 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 There might be as many as 10 million species of complex life on this planet today —— a huge number. But add up all of the complex species that ever lived and some biologists think the grand total would be about five billion. The estimate leads to an astonishing conclusion: a staggering 99% of species are not around any more. They have been driven to extinction. More species are joining the ranks of the extinct every year. Many scientists believe we are living through an episode of remarkably rapid extinction, on a scale that has been seen only five times in the last half a billion years. They call this current episode the sixth mass extinction —— a large, global decline in a wide variety of species over a relatively short period of time. And they tend to agree that humans are the main cause. Over-hunting, overfishing, and human-driven habitat loss are pushing many species to the brink. In fact, we have changed the planet so much that some geologists are now suggesting that we have entered a new phase in Earth's history; an epoch they call the "Anthropocene". By 2100, it is expected that humans will have caused the extinction of up to half of the world's current species. Because we are living through this extinction, it is relatively easy for us to study the driving forces behind it. But how do we determine what caused other mass die-offs that happened long ago? To do so we have to look at what archaeologists, palaeontologists, geologists and other scientists have concluded from the evidence they have gathered. The trouble is, those scientists do not always agree with one another —— even about the most recent extinction event. As well as the five-or six- mass extinctions, there have also been many smaller extinctions. One of these mini extinction events happened towards the end of the Pleistocene, a few tens of thousands of years ago. It is sometimes called the "megafaunal" extinction because many of the species it claimed were particularly large animals, weighing more than 97lb (44kg). However, its cause remains a debate amongst scientists. (1)What can we learn about the sixth mass extinction? A. Humans are the main cause of it. B. It means a global decline over a long time. C. It occurred towards the end of the Pleistocene. D. Scientists still disagree about the cause of it. (2)What can be inferred from the text about species? A. 99% of species will not be around any more by 2100. B. By the 22nd century, there will probably be about five million on this planet. C. About eight years later we will enter what is called the "Anthropocene". D. It is not easy for us to figure out causes behind the"Anthropocene". (3)Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word in the last paragraph ? A. Land animals. B. Marine life. C. Huge animals. D. Flesh-eating creatures.

高考英语阅读理解真题汇编(含答案)

高考英语阅读理解真题汇编(含答案) 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Mexico sites on an island plateau (高原) surrounded by volcanic peaks, which makes air quality a constant concern for people who live there. In April, the country took a decisive step toward improving air quality by enacting a temporary ban on private and Federal vehicles in the city. The rule forbids people from driving in the city one day each week and one Saturday each month. Electric vehicles, government service vehicles, public transport options and school buses are not included in the ban. Mexico City isn't the first urban center to be involved in car-free living. But the ban is more than an awareness-raiser. It was enacted with the direct aim of solving air pollution. In March, the city sank into a deep brown haze of smog when the pollution levels passed the 200 mark. The city ordered some 1.1m of the area's 4.7m cars off the streets and also offered free bus and subway rides. Mexico City's temporary vehicle ban raises questions about the best ways to improve urban air quality. India, whose citizens breathe some of the world's dirtiest air, has tried a variety of solutions. Earlier this year, the Indian government started a 4% sales tax on new-car purchases. Beijing also has experience with cleaning the air. The city introduced alternate-day rules in advance of the 2008 Olympic Games, which produced good results. And then there is the London congestion (拥挤) charge, introduced in 2003. The charge has had a measurable effect on air quality. For now, Mexico City — named by the United Nations as the most polluted city on the planet in 1992 — can look forward to the start of the region's rainy season, when daily showers will help lo clean the air. (1)How did Mexico ban vehicles in the city? A. By banning private and Federal vehicles one day a week. B. By forbidding private and public vehicles every Saturday. C. By limiting the number of new cars. D. By prohibiting the vehicles except public ones.(2)What did the government of Mexico do when carrying out the ban on vehicles? A. Raised the number of public vehicles. B. Offered free bus and subway rides. C. Introduced more travel options. D. Encouraged citizens to leave the city. (3)What may contribute to improving the air quality in Mexico? A. Alternate-day rules. B. Tax rises. C. Congestion charge. D. The rainy season.(4)What's the best title for the passage? A. Mexico —an Island Plateau B. A Variety of Bans on Vehicles in Mexico C. Should Cities Be Car-free Zones D. How to Improve Air Quality 【答案】(1)A (2)B (3)D (4)C
