Passage B

Why do we count things in group of ten? The reason is that we have ten fingers. Long __51__, when people had to count a lot of things, they matched them against their __52__. First they counted out enough objects to match the fingers of both hands and then put them aside in one group. __53__ there were more than ten, they formed more groups. We are all busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet?

Passage B

Doctors have reported for many years that cigarette-smoking can cause heart trouble, cancer and other medical problems. Later they also say illnesses caused by smoking kill at least 320,000

Americans each year. But smokers still find it rather difficult to stop. It is reported that 40 million Americans go on smoking. The Americans Cancer Society wants to change this. Every year the group organizes a Non-smoking Day in order to get people to give up cigarettes.

Passage D

American researchers(研究者) have successfully developed a new way to clean waste water without chemicals. The technique uses green plants.
