Argumentative writing should have an Introduction(kai tou), a Main Part (zheng wen) and a Conclusion(jie wei).

However, before you start a writer must make a Plan (ti gang). Making an effective plan is essential for good writing.

1. First, think of the ideas you have on the subject.

2. Second, group your ideas together.

3. Third, prioritise your ideas.

4. Forth, expand and connect your ideas.

A Pool of Ideas:

Organising (zu zhi) and Grouping your Ideas:

Once you have grouped your ideas together you should then Prioritize the groups, and then start to expand and develop your ideas: you can keep processing this method:

E.g. Dining Hall

Good food– good choice, high standard, fresh / cooked well, cheap.

Good choice–variety, different cooking methods/styles, diff’ restaurants High standards – clean environment, professional cooks

Fresh– all vegs bought daily from local market

Cheap– reasonably priced, special offers

Good service– helpful staff, good tables, television, shops / adjoining fast food.

Pleasant atmosphere– friendly, open all day, menu.

Hygienic– clean and tidy, disposable chopsticks.

As you can see, once you have your ideas linked together like this, it would be much easier to put your ideas and words into sentences.

Once you have your ideas you must group your ideas together in the same topic – zhu ti. Each Group is a Topic (zhu ti) will be written as a Paragraph(duan luo). E.g. trees and flowers belong with pleasant surroundings, not with things to do with teaching.

Each paragraph should begin with a Topic Sentence (zhu ti ju). Topic sentences are followed by the evidence (lun ju) and examples (li zi) to support the topic sentence.

An Example:

“The dining halls at JSTU, of which there are many, offer a first class service and excellent food. The dining halls have a wide choice of meals throughout the day at reasonable prices students can afford and are situated near the student dormitories for easy access. Students can choose from the many familiar rice-based dishes with meat and vegetables to a selection of noodles and light snacks. Cakes and other assorted foods are also available. In addition, students can also frequent an additional restaurant serving KFC-inspired fast food with the ubiquitous fizzy drink.”
