Graduation Ceremonies

May and June are the month s when most American colleges and universities hold their commencements. / These ceremonies are a time for family and friends / to gather and celebrate a student’s completion of an academic degree./

Most ceremonies are traditional. / The students wear caps and gowns over their clothing. / One by one, their names are called. / They go to the front, shake hands with school officials / and receive a document of some kind. /

But first they must sit and listen to speeches. / Colleges and universities often invite famous guests or former students who have become successful. / Schools often want speakers to comment on world events. / More recently, the trend has been to find a celebrity or a politician to deliver the speech./

Common themes of the graduation speech / include wishing the graduates well in the “real world”, / cautioning that the world of academy is a special place where they were taught to think./

Conversation 1:

---Hello, what’s wrong with you?

---I am coughing and have a running nose.

---How long have you had the problem?

---For two days.

---Do you have your temperature?

---Yes, it’s 38℃.

---How much have you been coughing? Do you have any sputum?

---I have a bad, dry cough, especially at night. I haven’t been sleeping well these days. Sometimes, I have vomited after coughing.

---Is anyone else also ill in your family?

---My sister had it a few days ago.

---Most likely it’s a virus infection. But I am not sure yet before seeing your blood test report.

---Doctor, here is my blood test report. Is it serious?

---You have come down with the flu. I’ll give you a prescription, and we will see after that.

---Do these medicines have any side effect?

---No, they have no side effects. These medicines will help you relieve the symptom. ---How can I have them?

---The white tablets are for your fever. Take one tablet when your temperature is above 38℃, but not more than once every four hours.

---How about the brown tablets?

---The brown tablets are for your cough. Take two tablets three times a day. If you feel worse, come back at anytime.

---Okay, thank you.

Conversation 2:

---Hi, Heather, I was wondering if you’re free tomorrow night.

---Well, George, I guess I am. Why do you ask?

---I have just gotten a pair of pre-sale “Star Wars” movie tickets from a friend and was thinking of inviting you along for the opening. Are you interested?

---Yeah, definitely! I really want to watch “Star Wars”on the opening day but the pre-sale tickets have been sold out. How did you manage to get hold of them?

---A friend of mine works at the corporate headquarters of “Pepsi”, which is a major sponsor of the movie. He was able to get the tickets for free, and then he sold 2 to me for $50 a piece.

---You paid $50 for each ticket? That’s a lot of extra money over the regular price!

---Not really, considering the fact that other people are paying as high as $200 each on the “black market”. Besides, I knew you were really looking forward to watching “Star Wars” on the opening day.

---Wow, I’m really honored you went through all this trouble just for my sake. I really appreciate that. So, what time are we going?

---Well, Let’s see. The movie starts at 10 p.m. We should get there at least I hour

earlier because there’ll be a big line. I could pick you up at your house at 8, if that’s OK with you.

---Okay, George. Bye!

---Bye, Heather.

Conversation 3:

---Time to eat!

---Coming. Oh, I’m starving. Oh yuck! What’s that?

---Ah, don’t complain.

---But what is it, and where is mom?

---Now, mom put me in charge of dinner because she’s not feeling well tonight.

---But what is it … and that smell!

---It’s pizza. I just followed an old family recipe here, and …

---Let me see that … Oh, dad, you’re missing a page!

---Oh, uh, well, uh … well I couldn’t find the second page of the recipe. But don’t worry; I have plenty of experience around the house. Plenty of cooking experience.

---That’s not what mom says.

---Well, wait; here let me try a piece first. Here, let me cool this off here. Oh, this is great stuff.

---Yeah right. Why are you making that face?

---Well, it’s just a little rich for me. That’s all.

---Let me try it, Dad. Uh, Dad. You put a little too much salt in it and besides it’s burned. And what’s that?

---Oh, well, that’s just part of my own adaptation to the recipe. I added some pumpkin.

---Oh, not another one of you surprises. Pumpkin doesn’t go on pizza!

---Well, okay, so what? What do we do now?

---Well, how about some cold cereal…You can’t mess up on that, Dad.

---Oh, I love cereal.

Passage 1:

Is your family interested in buying a dog? A dog can be a happy addition to your family, but if you choose the wrong kind of dog, the consequences can cause you a lot of trouble.

Families should sit down and thoroughly discuss the problems involved before buying a dog. Even if the children in your family are the ones who want the dogs, the parents are the ones who are really responsible for seeing that the animal is properly cared for. If you don’t know much about dogs, it’s a good idea to go to the library or the ASPCA for books about various kinds of dogs, as well as books about how to train a puppy. When a book describes a dog as an ideal hunting dog, it probably means that the dog won’t be happy living in a small apartment. Dog breeds vary in popularity as the years go by. One of the most popular dogs these days is the German shepherd. This is because it provides protection as well as companionship. The family should be warned that these dogs grow up to be very big, and may be too powerful for children to handle. If space is limited, a toy dog may be a good choice. These dogs are very small and easy to train. They don’t need to be walked daily, since they can exercise in the space available in the home.

Passage 2:

To find out what the weather is going to be, most people go straight to the radio, television, or newspaper, to get an expert weather forecast. But if you know what to look for, you can use your own senses to make weather prediction. For example, in fair weather, the air pressure is generally high the air is still, and often full of dust. And faraway objects may look vague. But when a storm is blowing, the pressure drops, and you are often able to see things more clearly. Sailors took note of this long ago, and came up with a saying: “The farther the sight the nearer the rain.” Your sense of smell can also help you detect weather changes. Just before it rains, odor s become stronger. This is because odors are repressed in a fair high pressure center. When a bad weather low moves in, air pressure lessens, and odors are released. You can also hear an approaching storm. An old saying: “Sound traveling far and wide, a stormy

day will be tied.”And don’t laugh at your grandmother if she says she can feel a storm coming. It is commonly known that many people feel pains in their bones or joints when humidity rises. The pressure drops, and bad weather is on the way.

Passage 3:

A used book or nearly-new kitchen tool may not be at the top of every Christmas wish list, but hard economic times and a new green awareness are changing attitudes about gift-giving in France. French holiday shoppers are choosing larger numbers for “green”gifting at Christmas, studies show. About 30 percent of French consumers will give second-hand items as gifts to meet their tight budgets but also to do their little bit for recycling, according to a study by international consulting firm. The survey of Christmas consumer behaviors in 18 European countries found the French were more than twice as likely as other Europeans to give second-hand items, making France a pioneer in the trend. Websites promoting re-gifting and green gifting are flourishing in France, with many reporting a rise in business. A study by online survey firm showed eight out of ten people would be happy to receive a use item as a gift and that younger consumers were more open to the idea. But environmental concerns are not the first consideration when buying used goods. The number one concern is getting the lowest possible price. Eco-friendly products are drawing a lot of interest, but not if that means paying more. The movie tickets and other low-carbon gifts are popular, and eco-friendly websites are also encouraging gift givers to offer time and services instead of stuff.

News:

News 1:

An international team of doctors and scientists is calling for more focus on the causes of death among young people around the world, age between 10 and 24, saying the issue is largely ignored by policy makers. A study published in the medical journal the Lancet found that 40% of adolescent deaths are caused by various forms of injury.

Until this research was published there were little data on how many young

people die worldwide in which countries and for what reasons. Now a pattern is emerging. The study suggests the death rate is strongly linked to how poor a country is. Most deaths are in the developing world driven by high rate of infectious disease and of maternal mortality. But globally 40% of adolescent deaths are caused by types of injury including road traffic accident, suicide and violent attacks.

News 2:

A series of natural disasters has struck Indonesia. More than 100 people were reported to have been killed by an earthquake and tsunami in a remote group of islands west of Sumatra. Shortly afterwards, the country’s most active volcano Mount Merapi in central Java erupted, killing 13 people.

Officials in West Sumatra said the three-metre-high tsunami washed away at least 10 villages in the Mentawai islands, but getting information from the worst-affected parts of the islands has been challenging. Bad weather has meant no search and rescue teams have been able to arrive in the area as yet. Meanwhile, black ash and soot has been spewing out of Mount Merapi ever since it erupted. Officials say more than 13,000 people have to be moved away from the volcano to refugee camps nearby.

News 3:

A panel of experts appointed by the White House has warned that current plans to send astronauts back to the moon in preparation for manned missions to Mars are just not viable. One of the panel members Li Ruoqiao says the space agency NASA hasn’t been given enough funds to realize the plans.

“That is when the visions for space aspirations were first announced in 2004 there was expectation of a certain budget level of the next several years. In fact over the last five years those numbers are nothing realized. So because of that we are in a pickle that we are in now.”

The experts say the current budget of the space agency NASA would need to be increased by billions of dollars. Without the extra money, the experts say, NASA would have to work with private companies now trying to embark on commercial

space flights.

News 4:

The sixth World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference will open in Hong Kong a week from tomorrow. Police say they will deploy 9,000 officers, or one third of its manpower, during the event. The government says the weeklong conference will bring inconvenience to the public and is appealing for understanding. The weeklong WTO Ministerial Conference opens on the 13th at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in Wanchai. Police revealed that they have received applications for public meetings and protests on practically everyday of the week during the conference.

News 5:

This was one of the most daring prison breakouts to take place in Greece. The helicopter landed in a courtyard of Korydallos prison in Athens as those on board threw flares into the area. Amid the confusion, two inmates managed to climb into the helicopter which took off again, flying to a nearby cemetery. The escaped prisoners then fled with their accomplices on motobikes which have since been found near the port of Piraes. One of the men, Vassilis Paleokostas, was serving a twenty-five-year sentence for kidnapping and bank robbery. It’s thought his brother, who’s been on the run since 1990, was behind the breakout. The police have arrested the helicopter pilot, who says he was forced to fly to the prison at gunpoint. Korydallos holds some of the country’s most notorious criminals, including the leaders of the miltant left-wing organization, November Seventeenth, who were found guilty of murdering politicians, businessmen and foreign diplomats.

例如:在一篇课文的Dialogue教学中,向学生出示一副画着漂亮自行车的图片,然后对学生说:look at this picture , what can you see ?(I can see a bike ).

CET-6 Conversation One W: I don’t know what to do. I can’t seem to get anyone in the hospital to listen to my complaints and this outdated equipment is dangerous. Just look at it. M: Hmm, uh, are you trying to say that it presents a health hazard? W: Yes, I am. The head technician in the lab tried to persuade the hospital administration to replace it, but they are trying to cut costs. M: You are pregnant, aren’t you? W: Yes, I am. I made an effort to get my supervisor to transfer me to another department, but he urged me not to complain too loudly. Because the administration is more likely to replace me than an X-ray equipment, I’m afraid to refuse to work. But I’m more afraid to expose my unborn child to the radiation. M: I see what you mean. Well, as your union representative, I have to warn you that it would take quite a while to force management to replace the old machines and attempt to get you transferred may or may not be successful. W: Oh, what am I supposed to do then? M: Workers have the legal right to refuse certain unsafe work assignments under two federal laws, the Occupation or Safety and Health Act and the National Labor Relations Act. But the requirements of either of the Acts may be difficult to meet. W: Do you think I have a good case? M: If you do lose your job, the union will fight to get it back for you along with back pay, your lost income. But you have to be prepared for a long wait, maybe after two years. Conversation Two W: Mr. Green, is it fair to say that negotiation is an art?

Did you ever hear the saying, “it’s easier to get the Mississippi to change its course than get a stubborn child to change his mind”? I guess whoever made this one up didn’t know that the Mississippi actually does change its course about every thousand years or so. How could a river change its course? Actually, the whole process is due to silt. Every year, erosion from farm fields and building projects washes millions of tons of soil into streams and rivers. When these tributary streams and rivers empty into the Mississippi, the floating soil particles are carried along in the fast-moving water from the heart of the continent towards the delta, where the river meets the sea. At the delta, the main channel of the river forks into many smaller channels. The water in the main channel slows down, and the floating soil settles to the bottom. Over time, this sediment builds up, and the main channel becomes shallower and shallower until it finally overflows and forms a new river, leaving the old channel to become a swamp.

比如西安市碑林区2008~2009学年度第一学期期末调研测试八年级英语试题听力部分的第一题“听句子选答语”的5个小题: ()1.A.TheTeensClothesStoreB.DumplingHouseC.TimeCinema ()2.A.EatmoremeatB.DrinkmorewaterC.Exercisemoreeveryday

()3.A.IamfreeB.Yes,sureC.No,thanks ()4.A.TwodaysB.TwiceamonthC.Fortwodays ()5.A.IamgoingtoexerciseeverydayB.IamgoingtoeatmorevegetablesC. Iamgoingtostudyreallyhard.
