Receiving new textbooks is one of the first things students do when they go back to school. Starting this autumn term, many senior high school(高中) students will start using new unified (统编的) textbooks in Chinese language, politics (思想政治), and history textbooks.

The new textbooks will first be used by first-year high school students in Beijing, Tianjin, Liaoning, Shanghai, Shandong and Hainan. The textbooks will go nationwide by 2022, according to the Ministry of Education (教育部).

The textbooks focus more on traditional Chinese culture.

For example, the new Chinese language textbook has added 67 traditional Chinese articles and poems, making up nearly half of the articles in the book.

In the history textbook, students will learn about the struggle (奋斗) of the Chinese people in

modern times, as well as the long journey of the Communist Party of China (CPC,中国共产党).

The new politics textbook aims to help students have a deeper understanding of why Chinese people have chosen the CPC as their leader.

The new textbooks will help strengthen their confidence in China’s path, theory (理论), system (制度) and culture. They will help a generation of young people grow up with all-around education (全面教育).

The books have been warmly welcomed. A survey showed that about 90 percent of students like the new textbooks, and about 92 percent of teachers are satisfied with the textbooks.

We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Most of us enjoy listening to our mothers speak. Scientists have found that compared to other people’s voices, our brains greatly prefer the voices of our own mothers. Scientists found that 97 percent of the time, children could recognize their mothers’ voices at once.

Hearing their mothers’ voices makes children’s brains more active. We usually just use one part of our brain to deal with sounds when we hear something. But when we hear our mothers’ voices, many parts of the brain, including those in charge of (负责) reward (奖赏) and emotion (情感), start to work as well.

Why do we respond(反应) so strongly to our mothers’ voices? It starts even before we’re born. When children are still in the womb (子宫) or have just been born, they hear their mothers talking.

This makes babies feel comfortable and teaches them language and social skills, even though they are still very young. The babies learn to recognize their mothers’ voices as a rewarding (奖励性的) sound. Later, when this sound is heard again, more attention is paid to it.

Some sounds are necessary for our survival (生存) or bring us pleasure. These sounds are recognized by our brains as rewarding sounds. Most human voices are not recognized in this way, since we hear them so often. But mothers’ voices are differe nt. They bring us a lot of comfort.

On July 1, Shanghai created a new garbage-sorting regulation (规定). Everyone in the city must now sort (分类) his or her garbage into four categories(种类): wet, dry, harmful, and recyclable (可回收的).

This sounds like a great idea. If we can sort our garbage properly, we can reduce (减少) waste and recycle things more efficiently (更有效地). But I wonder －will people actually follow this regulation?

In fact, most Chinese cities already have these recycling options (设置). Outside of my apartment building, there are three bins －kitchen waste, recyclable waste and other waste. Guess how many people actually put their garbage into the correct bin? Most people ignore (忽视) these labels and just put their garbage into whatever bin they want.

Look, I understand. Sorting garbage correctly can be hard. Not everyone knows the difference between “wet” and “harmful” garbage, for example. And it takes time to sort it properly. How can we deal with this problem?

Actually, it can be done. In wealthy US cities, such as Scottsdale, every family must sort their garbage correctly. If they don’t, they have to pay a fine (罚款).

But in small towns like my hometown, we still don’t have garbage sorting. The garbage truck just comes once a week and collects our garbage. However, if we take our empty cans or bottles to the grocery store, we can recycle them and get some money.

Personally, I don’t think it would be hard for me to sort my garbage. I don’t sort it now, but maybe I will later.
