The CircleSoaps come in different colors and shapes. Young children love them. They enjoy washing their hands with these wonderful soaps. And it is really easy for them to hold these soaps.

“One day, I was playing with a piece of soap in our bathroom. I made a hole in the middle of it. My mom said, ‘Hey Carter, stop making that hole and ruining (毁坏) my soap!” But after several days my little sisters were using the soap and it was easier for them to use. So one day I told my mom that we could make soaps with holes in the middle, and sell them to get money to buy the homeless people an apartment so they could live there for free,” said Carter excitedly.

Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat, it’s not fair to other people.

Some kids cheat at school because they’re busy playing or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending much time studying. Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the exam without cheating. Even though there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.

A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher or another adult. He or she can find some ways to help solve this problem. Talking about the problem and working it out will make the kid feel better than cheating.

Kids who cheat may feel worried about getting caught. Whether they are caught or not, these kids may feel guilty or embarrassed.

There’s an old saying that cheaters never win and winners never cheat. This may sound difficult to understand, because sometimes it seems like cheaters do win-at least for the moment. However, sooner or later, they’ll pay the price. And kids who don’t cheat are true winners because, when they win, they do it honestly.

29. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A. Why kids cheat.

B. How kids cheat.

C. When kids cheat.

D. What cheating is.

30. What s the writer’s advice for kids who want to cheat in a test?

A. Try not to be caught.

B. Study hard for the test.

C. Turn to adults for help

D. Pass the test without cheating.

31. What does the underlined word “guilty” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. Lucky.

B. Proud.

C. Happy.

D. Sorry.

32. What s the writer’s attitude towards the old saying?

A. He is against it.

B. He agrees with it.

C. He doubts whether it is true.

D. He thinks nothing of it.

In the 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Bad events like "serious illness of a family member" were high on the list, but so were some helpful life-changing events like marriage. When you take the Holmes-Rahe test you must remember that the score does not show how you deal with stress - it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you deal with these events dramatically (戏剧性的) affects your chances of staying healthy. By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women's magazines ran titles like "Stress causes illness". If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy the articles said avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous , many — like the death of a loved one — are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription (处方) for staying away from chances as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The idea that all stress makes you sick also takes no notice of a lot of what we know about people. It supposes we' re all vulnerable and not active in the face of the difficult situation. But what about human ability and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental strength than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom and physical and mental pressure. 1. The result of Holmes-Rahe’s medical research tells us _________________. A. the way you deal with major events may cause stress B. what should be done to avoid stress C. what kind of event would cause stress D. how to deal with sudden changes in life 2. The studies on stress in the early 1970s led to ___________________. A. popular avoidance of stressful jobs B. great fear over the mental disorder

Unit1 Anne’s Best Friend Do you want a friend whom you could tell everything to, like your deepest feelings and thoughts? Or are you afraid that your friend would laugh at you, or would not understand what you are goi ng through? Anne Frank wanted the first kind, so she made her diary her best friend. Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War Ⅱ. Her family was Jewish so nearl y twenty-five months before they were discovered. During that time the only true friend was her diary. She said, ”I don’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary as most people do, but I want this diary itself to be my friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty.” Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place si nce July 1942. Thursday 15th June, 1944 Dear Kitty, I wonder if i t’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy ab out everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sk y, the song of the birds, moonlight and flowers could never have kept me spellbound. That’s chan ged since I was here. … For example, one evening when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by my self. But as the moon gave far too much light, I di dn’t dare open a window. Another time five months ago, I happened to be upstairs at dusk when the window was open. I didn’t go downstairs until the window bad to be shut. The dark, rainy eve ning, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a ye ar and a half that I’d seen the night face to face… … Sadly …I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtains hanging before very dusty windows . It’s no pleasure looking through these any longer because nature is one thing that really must be experienced.
