An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.

Fragile items like those made of glass are easily broken and should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them in the cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. So when there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.

There is a strong chance of short circuits and fire during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.

During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases(楼梯) at all times.

If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.

If trapped in ruins, cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or the wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle(哨子) if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust. Do not light a match because you may burn

yourself.

25. The underlined word “Fragile” in Paragraph 2 probably means____________

A. easily found

B. easily broken

C. expensive

D. heavy

26. To reduce the injury from the earthquake, items made of glass should be put ________.

A. in the cupboards

B. on a lower surface

C. in the bedroom

D. in a place where children can’t reach them

27. During the earthquake, people are advised to ________.

A. go out of the building at once

B. shout for help

C. take shelter under a tree

D. turn off electricity and gas immediately

It has been discovered that after the age of sixteen, the number of our brain cells begins to decrease at a speed of several million a year. They simply die off. In certain types of activity, the human brain is at its highest point in the early twenties, when it has collected enough information to be able to use the vast number of cells freely in the most effective way. Pure mathematics is one of the fields in which this happens, and we know that Albert Einstein made all his world-shaking discoveries between the age of about 20 and 25, and spent the rest of his life tidying them up and arranging them.

But in certain other types of activity (of which being an author is perhaps one), experience is more important than sharpness of brain, and there one usually finds that a person reaches his or her peak much later in life.

Besides sharpness of brain and experience, here is another thing that is very important, and that is wisdom. One can have a very quick, inventive brain and plenty of experience, but if one uses these foolishly, one harms both oneself and others. Wisdom does not always come with age ——there are plenty of foolish middle-aged people about ——but the average person tends to learn wisdom as he gets older, usually by making painful of embarrassing mistakes. Leaning to be wise is basically learning what is not possible; and what is possible but so difficult that it is not worth all the trouble one has to go through to get there. Mostly, it is learning about human nature; how real people behave and react, as against how one would like them to behave and react. One can read and hear lot of idealistic stuff about how to make the world a better place, which would be found if it was based on an accurate observation of human nature, but which is basically a waste of time because it is not. 28.According to the writer, the great discoveries made by Albert Einstein were mainly a result in________.

A. years of hard work

B. sharpness of the brain

C. rich experience

D. his deep understanding of the nature

29.Some people achieve success much later in life because .

A. their work often requires much experience

B. they do not have a chance to show their talents

C. they have to learn lessons from failures

D. they fail to realize earlier the importance of hard work

30.The importance of wisdom lies in the fact that .

A.it helps to avoid various mistakes

B.it contributes to one's creativity

C. it provides the right direction of efforts

D. it encourages one to go forward in face of difficulty

31.The writer came to believe that .

A.it is always a waste of time to make plans about the future

B.it is human nature to make attempts on what looks impossible

C.one should always challenge the impossible to push the society forward

D.one has to use wisdom in deciding what is the best thing to do

D

Your house may have an effect on your figure.Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.

Open the curtain and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情的) when they're in poorly lit places-and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn't have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it's time to repaint, go blue.

Don't forget the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals, Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you're at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a

smaller one, total intake(摄入)jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid

into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

32. The text is especially helpful for those who care about_______.

A. their home comforts

B. their body shape

C. house buying

D. healthy diets

33. A home environment in blue can help people_______.

A. digest food better

B. reduce food intake

C. burn more calories

D. regain their appetite

34. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?

A. Eat quickly

B. Play fast music

C. Use smaller spoons

D. Turn down the lights

35.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Is Your House Making You Fat?

B. Ways of Serving Dinner

C. Effects of Self-Consciousness

D. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?

参考范文:

Dear WangMing,

I am sorry to hear that you have been ill for days and hope you have got better now. You have been so absorbed in study that you have no time for exercise, which is really harmful to your health. I feel it would be more beneficial to your health if you have a positive attitude towards exercise in the future.

You may think that the time spent is wasted. Actually, taking exercise regularly can do good to your health and study. Only when you have strong body can you keep on studying and face more challenges. So make a plan that you take at least one hour's exercise every day from now on.

All in all, the more you exercise, the stronger body you will have.

Sincerely yours,

Li Hua
