PartⅠReading Comprehension

Passage 1

After a while, people became attached to one brand and sales leveled off (stage of maturity).

When it was introduced, most people did not like it as well as “regular” coffee, and it took several years to gain general acceptance可知新产品在刚开始时难以让消费者接受。

3.答案A

The importance of the product life cycle to marketers is this: Different stages in the product life cycle call for different strategies.

One strategy is called market modification. It means that marketing managers look for new users and market sections. Did you know, for example, that the backpacks that so many students carry today were originally designed for the military? 可知“look for new users and market sections寻找新的市场的重要性”,即B选项中的exploring new market sections。

Another product extension strategy is called product modification. It involves changing product quality, features, or style to attract new users or more usage from present users.

Passage 2

The many expressions of human violence are always conditioned by social conventions that give shape to aggressive behavior.?

7.答案A

The violence within a society is controlled through institutions of law。

9.答案A

Passage 3

文中第一段提到“we all make mistakes”,说明爱迪生的预言是错误的。

14.答案A

Passage 4

A survey earlier in the year by consultants at McKinsey found that 70% of American directors and investors supported the idea of splitting the

jobs, which is standard practice in Europe.,将董事长和总裁的职务区分开来是“欧洲的行业惯例”。

19.答案A

Part Ⅲ Translation

Section A 英译中

Section B 中译英

To participate and to win, that is the Olympic spirit. It finds expression in the weak daring to defy the strong, and the strong striving for ever better performance. “Ever better”, the ideal is always luring a sportsman forward. He will do everything he can for it, never relax and never give

up. It is said that none of the competitors can avoid being defeated; even the best is bound to be surpassed by someone still stronger. Thousands of losers set off one victor who in turn will eventually be replaced by someone on the honor list. This is the rule of sports. However, undaunted by the inevitable failure, he is always striving to do the best he can.

Part Ⅳ Writing

Intensive learning is an efficient way for learning

Depending on personal experience, personality type and emotional concern, different people have different habits or ways for study. Some people like studying a subject in a very intensive way while others prefer to study a subject over a long period of time. From my point of view, it is advisable to study intensively. My arguments are listed as follows.

The first reason for my inclination for an intensive learning is that studying a subject in a very intensive way can make the learner more concentrated on the subject. In contrast, to study the same subject year after year under a loose circumstance may lead to boredom or lack of interests in the subject. Besides, intensive study is much more time-saving than studying over a long period of time. A student who studies a single subject for several years and is unable to pass the examination is likely to be required for an extra time to study it again. What's more In fact, we can not be provided with a long period of time to study a subject constantly, for there are some more important things for us to do. So if we can finish studying a subject in a short time, we can focus ourselves on other things without a constant worry about our unfinished subject.

From what I have mentioned above, we can reach the conclusion that intensive learning is an efficient way for learning, and it should be encouraged.

General English Admission Test For Non-English Major Ph.D. program (Harbin Institute of Technology) Passage One Questions 1-7 are based on the following passage: According to a recent theory, Archean-age gold-quartz vein systems were formed over two billion years ago from magmatic fluids that originated from molten granitelike bodies deep beneath the surface of the Earth. This theory is contrary to the widely held view that the systems were deposited from metamorphic fluids, that is, from fluids that formed during the dehydration of wet sedimentary rocks. The recently developed theory has considerable practical importance. Most of the gold deposits discovered during the original gold rushes were exposed at the Earth’s surface and were found because the y had shed trails of alluvial gold that were easily traced by simple prospecting methods. Although these same methods still leas to an occasional discovery, most deposits not yet discovered have gone undetected because they are buried and have no surface expression. The challenge in exploration is therefore to unravel the subsurface geology of an area and pinpoint the position of buried minerals. Methods widely used today include analysis of aerial images that yield a broad geological overview, geophysical techniques that provide data on the magnetic, electrical, and mineralogical properties of the rocks being investigated, and sensitive chemical tests that are able to detect : the subtle chemical halos that often envelop mineralization. However, none of these high-technology methods are of any value if the sites to which they are applied have never mineralized, and to maximize the chances of discovery the explorer must therefore pay particular attention to selecting the ground formations most likely to be mineralized. Such ground selection relies to varying degrees on conceptual models, which take into account theoretical studies of relevant factors. These models are constructed primarily from empirical observations of known mineral deposits and from theories of ore-forming processes. The explorer uses the models to identify those geological features that are critical to the formation of the mineralization being modeled, and then tries to select areas for exploration that exhibit as many of the critical features as possible. 1. The author is primarily concerned with . A. advocating a return to an older methodology. B. explaining the importance of a recent theory. C. enumerating differences between two widely used methods D. describing events leading to a discovery 2. According to passage, the widely held view of Archean-age gold-quartz vein
