Are you bored with learning about insects in books? Why not find a few and take a close look by yourself? It’s easy. Insects are everywhere: not just at home or around lights at night, but also i n flowers and vegetable gardens, near lakes, parks and in forests.

To have fun watching insects, you need:

Start by reading books about the insects you’re after. Where can you 1 them? Do they live beside a lake or in trees? When you go out to watch insects, bring along an insect guide 2 pictures with you. A good choice would be “Souvenirs Entomologiques(《昆虫记》)” by Jean Henri Fabre.

Dress properly because some insects bite! 3 trousers and shirts with long sleeves(袖子). Bring a first-aid box. Once you’re ready, an early morning and a nearby park would be a good 4 to start. Insects like to hide in 5 and humid places. Try moving stones and checking flowers, leaves and the soil. You may use a magnifier(放大镜) to 6 what insects do. Or, you can put them on a piece of clean paper to look 7 at them. How many legs do they have? What color are they?

An important 8 is to try not to disturb insects. You may want to shake the tree or pick them up, but if you’re not careful, you may hurt them. You can collect insects 9 using a piece of card to pick them up. After watching, remember to put insects back 10 you found them.

Warm water freezes more quickly than cold water. Sir Francis Bacon said that almost four hundred years ago. But few people believed him until 1970. In that year a Canadian scientist George Kill proved the English professor was right. Dr Kill filled an open oil pail(桶) with cold water. He filled another with warm water. He put both in the same low temperature. The warm water froze first. The lack of covers on the pails is the secret. Some of the warm water changed into vapor. This meant that less of the warm water was left to be frozen. And so the warm water froze faster than the cold water even though it had a greater temperature drop to make.

If you do not use your arm or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong. If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault . But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame , and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can’t read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or wri te and they have to remember things; they cannot write down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised. So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: Practice remembering.

( )6. The main reason for one’s poor memory is that _______.

A. his father or mother may have a poor memory

B. He does not use his name or legs for some time

B. How To Have a Good Memory

C. Strong Arms And Good Memories

Is it difficult for you to get up in the morning? Hiroyuki’s bed will solve your problem! Here is how it works.

The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music. The tape recorder in Hiroyuki’s bed plays a recording of his girlfriend. She whispers in a soft voice, “Wake up, darling, please.”After minutes later, Hiroyuki hears a recording of his boss. His boss shouts, “Wake up at once, or you’ll be late!”

If you don’t get up after the second recording, a mechanical “foot” in the bed will kick you in the head. The bed waits a few more minutes. What! You’re still in bed! Slowly the top of the bed rises higher and higher. The foot of the bed goes lower and lower. Finally you slide off the bed and onto the floor. You are out of bed awake!

Hiroyuki’s bed is not in stores. There is only one bed —the bed Hiroyuki made for a contest. Maybe some day a company will make Hiroyuki’s bed and sell it in stores. Maybe people will buy millions of beds. Then Hiroyuki will be rich. If the bed makes Hiroyuki rich, he won’t need to work, and he won’t need to get up early!
