II. Reading Comprehension

Passage 1

Many people dump (倾倒) most of their garbage in sanitary landfills (垃圾填埋池). Now the landfills are overflowing(泛滥) with garbage. People are noticing that certain items in the garbage aren’t breaking down and mixing with the soil. Things made of glass, plastics and tin change little over years and they are piling up (堆积).

We need to do something about it. But how? Recycling is the answer to the problem. People in many countries are trying to use these items again to make new things. It is important because it conserves (保护,保持,保存) natural resources and saves energy. For example, recycling paper saves trees. Recycling also saves space in landfills. Let’s work together to make our world beautiful.

Passage 2

When you take a walk in any of the cities in the West, you often see a lot of people walking dogs. It is still true that a dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world, but the reason why people keep a dog has changed. In the old days people used to train dogs to protect themselves against attacks from other beasts. And later they came to realize that a dog was not only useful for protection but willing to obey his master. For example, when people used dogs for hunting, the dog would not eat what was caught without permission.

But now people in cities need not protect themselves against attacks of animals. Why do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery. But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with. For young couples, a dog is their child when they have no children. For old couples, a dog is also their child when their real children have grown up. So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship.

Passage 3

The biggest safety threat facing airlines today may not be a terrorist with a gun , but the man with the portable computer in business class. In the last 15 years, pilots have reported well over 100 incidents that could have been caused by electromagnetic interference. The source of this interference remains unconfirmed, but increasingly, experts are pointing the blame at portable electronic devices such as portable computers, radio and cassette players and mobile telephones.

RTCA, an organization which advises the aviation (航空) industry, has recommended that all airlines ban (禁止) such devices from being used during "critical" stages of flight, particularly take-off and landing. Some experts have gone further, calling for a total ban during all flights. Currently, rules on using these devices are left up to individual airlines. And although some airlines prohibit passengers from using such equipment during take-off and landing, most are reluctant to enforce a total ban, given that many passengers want to work during flights.

The difficulty is predicting how electromagnetic fields might affect an aircraft's computers. Experts know that portable devices emit radiation which affects those wavelengths which aircraft use for navigation and communication. 8ut, because they have not been able to reproduce these effects in a laboratory, they have no way of knowing whether the interference might be dangerous or not.

The fact that aircraft may be vulnerable (易受损的) to interference raises the risk that terrorists may use radio systems in order to damage navigation equipment. As worrying, though, is the passenger who can't hear the instructions to turn off his radio because the music's too loud.

11. The passage is mainly about __________.

A. a new regulation for all airlines

B. the defects of electronic devices

C. a possible cause of aircraft crashes

D. effective safety measures for air flight

12. What is said about the over 100 aircraft incidents in the past 15 years?

A. They may have been caused by the damage to the radio systems.

B. They may have taken Place during take-off and landing.

C. They were proved to have been caused by the passengers, portable computers.

D. They were suspected to have resulted from electromagnetic interference.

13. Few airlines want to impose a total passengers using electronic devices because_________.

A. they don’t believe there is such a danger as radio interference

B. the harmful effect of electromagnetic interference is yet to be proved

C. most passengers refuse to take a plane which bans the use of radio and cassette

players

D. they have other effective safety measures to fall back on

14. Why is it difficult to predict the possible effects of electromagnetic field on an airplane's computers?

A. Because it is extremely dangerous to conduct such research on an airplane

B. Because it remains a mystery what wavelengths are liable to be interfered with.

C. Because research scientists have not been able to produce the same effects in

labs

D. Because expert lack equipment to do such research.

15. It can be inferred from the passage that the author ________.

A. is in favor of prohibiting passengers-use of electronic devices completely

B. has overestimated the danger of electromagnetic interference

C. hasn't formed his own opinion on this problem

D. regards it as unreasonable to exercise a total ban during flight

Words are the tools of a speaker’s craft. They have special uses, just like the tools of any other profession. As a speaker, you should be aware of the meaning of words and know how to use language accurately, clearly, vividly, and appropriately. Using language accurately is as vital to a speaker as using numbers accurately to a accountant. Never use a word unless you are sure of its meaning. If you are not sure, look up the word in the dictionary. As you prepare your speeches, ask yourself constantly, “What do I really want to say? What do I really mean?”Choose words that are precise and accurate. Using language clearly allows listeners to grasp your meaning immediately. In spite of the influence of spectators, what has occurred historically is that sports have maintained their basic format. Innovations have been made within this framework, rather than completely dismantling the design of a game. For example, the commercialization of the Olympic Games has led to minor rule changes in certain events, but the basic structure of each Olympic sport has remained much the same as it was before the days of corporate endorsements and the sale of television rights. Unit4 Is Google Making Us Stupid 1.Over the past few years I've had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprograming the memory. My mind isn't going 一so far as I can tell 一but it's changing. I'm not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I’m reading. Immersing myself in a book or a lengthy article used to be easy. My mind would get caught up in the narrative or the turns of the argument, and I’d spend hours strolling throu gh long stretches of prose. That's rarely the case anymore. Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do. I feel as if I'm always dragging my wayward brain back to the text. The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle. Unit5 An Alpine Divorce 2.Doubtless there exists in this world precisely the right woman for any given man to marry and vice versa; but when you consider that one human being has the opportunity of being acquainted with only a few hundred people, and out of the few hundred that there are but a dozen or less whom one knows intimately, and out of the dozen, one or two close friends at most, it will easily be seen, when we remember the number of millions who inhabit this world, that probably, since the Earth was created, the right man has never yet met the right woman. The mathematical chances are all against such a meeting, and this is the reason that divorce courts exist. Marriage at
