BOOK REPORT
This is the first English book I have ever read. The whole process is pleasant, though I have to deal with uncountable new words. To choose Fitzgerald as my first English teacher is a real challenge, and I’ m glad I could manage to do it.
Let’s look at the book: hard cover biding，504pages, and Cambridge edition.
What make it different are its precious firsthand information, strict editorial principle, and of course, academic background. This book also included some uncollected stories which are “as good as all but the best of Fitzgerald’s short fiction”.
In this book, we see a lovely young man, Anson, who was born rich and owned an irreplaceable superiority. This man had been deeply convinced of integrity and social principles, though he might seem dissipated. He fell in love with a serious, dark girl, which was beyond people’s expectation. But the girl, Paula, found him actually not suitable for her despite his enthusiasm.
Then it came the painful parting scene---Paula sank into another young man’s arm, while Anson couldn’t help missing her.
Anson did attempt to get married, but after he hurt a little girl Dolly he felt old. For years he had been tortured himself by wild spree and drinking. His family declined day by day, while his so-called integrity was disappearing. He sure was the favorite among people, but what shined in his mind was a family, a warm harbor of refuge.
There must be a night when loneliness poured in, and he had nowhere to go. The darkness was gathering, while he saw a woman standing by the portal---it was Paula. She had three kids now, and was living a happy life .When Anson again opened his mind to her, she just smiled and explained patiently.
The psychological moment had passed forever since their last kiss goodbye.
Now Anson was feeling even older, he brought a dull air to the office, and he no longer entertained a hope for the future.
By the end showed up a red tam beauty, which lit up the hue at once. What about Anson? He was indeed talking to her.
However, this seemed more or less dolorous(忧伤的)anyway to me.
The outline could have been vivid, and perhaps I have exhausted all my energies on the daily summary. That one is much more emotional,
exactly.
Let’s firstly concentrate on the outward aspect---language.
Fitzgerald’s novel is especially famous for its exquisite language. He mainly use American English, though he actually had a Hibernian(爱尔兰的)background. Apart from classicism or modernism, its fictions were constructed in a singular manner(独树一帜).The choice of words is appropriate and meticulous(一丝不苟的), decorated with tactful humor. Its figure of speech(比喻)is also talented. But it will never impress you as artificial, but rather pleasant. Fitz certainly had his own philosophy for life, but he skillfully pictured it through images, while many authors impatiently begins to drum in(灌输).He taught me to be modest, to make friends with every reader, to show respect for all the sentiment souls behind the pages. Writers needn’t be all-knowing, but rather reflecting and inspiring. To do this, they have to make their heart as clear as a mirror. I’m not saying they’re blank in mind but they at least own free spaces and are ready to take in something. Then their writings will live long. This is a sort of communication, Fitz did understand it.
As a writer who had won distinction in his teens, his work is romantic and fantasy in general, as many young poets. But the experiences of his own life undoubtedly shrouded(蒙上) his stories a slight of fateful sorrow.
Young Anson Hunter, a boy with boundless future（前途无量），a son of a financial magnate(金融巨头)---he ought to lead a carefree life, but ended in indefinable(说不清的) confusion. He wanted warmth and safety, but was rewarded with unexpected temporal affairs(世俗事务).People liked him but could only show their concerns, and no sunshine could pierce the clouds to reach deep in his heart. Wandering in the melancholy night of New York, he felt as if he were a drifter. However joyful the party was, the essence(本质)was nothingness(虚无).
Anson did make mistakes now and then, but what he did seemed to be a kind of revenge or self-punishment. He hurt Dolly, he exposed his aunt’s crime, and even killed her man. It was a keen sense of justice that encouraged him to do these. He won the game but lost the whole world, something has been changed but he didn’t notice.
Anson felt old, nor did he think he could ever get married. Anson’s family has been separated, and fortunes were also divided. Old friends no longer needed his help or advice, and the bartender (酒吧侍者)has been replaced. This was a short blank in his life, in which he could see how lonely he actually was and used to be.
A turn for the better showed up in the end, but all reader would know: things had never been ended.
I’ll refer this report as a reprint of my daily summary, and in some aspects,
it’s a little bit inferior(逊色). Maybe I’d better write it during reading, and put my thoughts together.
All right, anyway I have to thank Fitzgerald and his excellent works, though I have been tortured for days. Next time I would probably choose him again--- first time strangers, second time friends:-D.

The book report of The old man and the sea By Ernest Hemingway Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. Hemingway received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. During his later life, Hemingway suffered from increasing physical and mental problems. In July 1961, he committed suicide by shooting, himself. Hemingway's distinctive writing style is characterized by economy and understatement and had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing. The Old Man and the Sea is based on the novel written true story. After World War II, Hemingway moved to Cuba, met old fisherman Gregorio Fuentes. In 1930, Hemingway by a ship in the storm victims, Fuentes and Hemingway rescued. Since then, Hemingway and Fuentes developed a profound friendship. In 1936, Fuentes was far out to sea to catch a big fish. Fishing is one of the most dangerous work in the word. They must face up to the dangerous environment. Also they must face the loneliness. The story is one year near sixty years of age senior fisherman. At first 84 days, he did not fish one fish. He did not have enough food, and many locals doubt his fishing technique. The Old Man and the Sea Nowadays I have read a book called The Old Man and the Sea. This novel written by Hemingway told us a story about an old man whose name is Santiago. It was one of Hemingway’s most famous novels and helped Hemingway made great achievement in his literature career. What’s more, this book was published by YILIN PRESS in April 1, 2007. The hero of The Old Man and the Sea was a senior fisherman who called Santiago. He was ordinary but brave and great. Whatever the weather, he had to fish to make a living. His life was very hard, but he never gave up. Santiago faced his life positively and lived well by himself. Fortunately, he was not lonely because of the company of a little boy. The cute boy’s name was Manolin. In Manolin’s heart, this old fisherman was not only a hero, but also his idol. He treated Santiago very well and often helped him. Though Manolin’s parents prevented him staying with Santiago, this little boy didn’t do this. He still chose to accompany and learn from the senior fisherman, who was a hero in his eyes. He believed that Santiago was a good fisherman and he could obtain some knowledge from him. I think that we should also learn from Santiago due to his great spirit. Leading character Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea and returned empty-handed. At first 84 days, he did not even fish one fish. He did not have enough food, and many locals to doubt his fishing technique. Some even laugh at him. So, He decided to go to the sea to fish food and proved that he is a skilled fisherman. On the eight-fifth day of his unlucky streak, Santiago does as promised, sailing his skiff far beyond the island’s shallow coastal waters and venturing into the Gulf Stream. At noon, a big fish, marlin, take the bait that Santiago has placed before. Although the old man expertly hooks the fish, but he cannot pull it in. Instead, the fish begins to pull the boat. He knows perfectly well very difficult to win, but still did not give up. Since then, they began their three-day fighting. The entire time, Santiago, endures constant pain from the fishing line. Eventually, the third day, the fish tires, and Santiago manages to pull the marlin in close enough to kill it with a harpoon thrust. However, things do not go smoothly as he expected. On his way home, he is attacked buy several crowds of shark. Although he kills the sharks in the end, they have devoured the marlin’s precious meat, leaving only skeleton. The old man arrives home before daybreak, and sleeps very deeply. Later on, the old man wakes up and finds the little boy Mandolin staying with him, and decides to go to sea to fish again. In fact, the story contains many different symbols and themes .By reading this book, I was deeply impressed by the old man and what he said “a man can be destroyed but not defeated.” Santiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. Instead, he emerges as a hero. Santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. But the struggle somehow enables him to meet his most dignified destiny.
