They came to the beach. To ease the sense of fear, he took a 48 of his father. Then he put the camera aside and picked up the gun. His father said happily, "I've been 49 a long time for this day. III. Reading Comprehension (50 Points)

In this section there are 5 passages, and each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions.

Questions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:

In the United States, it is important to be on time, or punctual, for an

appointment, a class, a meeting, etc. This may not be true in all countries, however. An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian university. The two-hour class was scheduled (预定) to begin at 10 am. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10 am. Several arrived after 10:30 am. Two students came after 11 am. Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized for their lateness. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students' behavior.

The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation: lunch with a friend, and a university class. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react. If they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American students thought of lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian students felt the friend was late after 33 minutes.

In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour. However, in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but they also end at the scheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at noon; many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. While arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.

The explanation for these differences is complicated (复杂的). People from Brazilian and North American cultures have different feelings about lateness. In Brazil, the students believe that a person who usually arrives late is probably more successful than a person who is always on time. If a Brazilian is late for an appointment with a North American, the American may misunderstand the reason for the lateness and become angry.

As a result of his study, the professor learned that the Brazilian students were not being disrespectful (不尊重) to him. Instead they were simply behaving the natural way for a Brazilian student in Brazil. Later, the professor was able to change his own behavior to feel comfortable in the new culture.

66. According to the selection, an American professor discovered ______.

69. In Brazil, people think a person who arrives on time is ______.

A. not an important person

B. usually a professor

C. a government official

D. a millionaire

70. We can infer from the selection that the professor felt comfortable in Brazil after a period of time because he probably ______.

A. made his students come to class on time

B. gave up his job and enjoyed his stay there

C. also went to class late

D. criticize the students whenever they are late

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:

A fable is an animal tale that teaches a lesson. Fables tell important truths about the way people act. Some writers of fables give the lessons at the end of the story. "Look before you leap (跳)," "Don't count your chickens before they're hatched (孵化)," and many other sayings are the lessons of old fables.

There have not been many writers of fables, but the works of a few are very well-known. One of the men was a Greek slave named Aesop.

Aesop was probably born about 620 BC in the ancient Asian country of Phrygia. A rich Greek named Iadmon bought Aesop and made him a household (家庭) slave.

Aesop had no education, but he knew a great deal about people and the way they behaved. While he was in the household of Iadmon he had a chance to see and hear many of the important people of Greek society and politics. Soon Aesop began to tell stories, wonderful tales about animals who spoke and acted just as the Greeks did.

Iadmon loved the stories Aesop told. He began to take his slave to the homes of other important men where Aesop told new animal tales, always with a lesson at the end. Later Iadmon freed him. Aesop spent most of his life going

from one home to another, telling his stories at great dinner parties and at other gatherings of the important men of Greece.

Finally the Emperor Croesus heard about Aesop and ordered him to serve him. For many years Aesop lived there and told his stories. Often the fables were about the court, or they expressed ideas of how men in high places should act.

There are different accounts (解释) of Aesop's death. One says that he was put to death for stealing a gold cup from the temple of Apollo. Another tells of his offending some people who threw him off a cliff (悬崖)。

Whether a man named Aesop really lived is not important. What does matter is that someone gave us a great many fables.

Questions 76 to 80 are based on the following passage:

The family is changing. In the past, grandparents, parents and children used to live together; in other words, they had an "extended family". But family structure is changing throughout the world. The "nuclear family" consists of only one father, one mother and children; it is becoming the main family structure everywhere.

The nuclear family offers married women some advantages: they have freedom from their relatives, and the husband does not have all the power of the family. Family structure in most parts of the world is still "patriarchal"; that is, the father is the head of the family and makes most of the important decisions. Studies show, however, that in nuclear families, men and women usually make an equal number of decisions about family life. Also, well-educated husbands and wives often prefer to share the power.

But wives usually have to "pay" for the benefits of freedom and power. When women lived in extended families, sisters, grandmothers and aunts helped one another with housework and childcare. In addition, older women in a large family group had important positions. Wives in nuclear families do not enjoy this benefit, and they have another disadvantage, too. Women generally live longer than their husbands, so older women from nuclear families often have to live alone.

Studies show that women are generally less satisfied with marriage than men are. In the past, men worked outside the home and women inside. Housework and childcare were a full-time job, and there was no time for anything else. Of course, this situation is changing. Women now work outside the home and seem to have more freedom than they did in the past. Why, then, are some women still discontent?

In most parts of world today, women work because the family needs more money. However, their outside jobs often give them less freedom, not more, because they still have to do most of the housework. The women actually have two full-time jobs -- one outside the home and another inside -- and not much free time.

76. Families around the world are generally ______.

A. bigger than they used to be

B. smaller than they used to be

C. the same as they used to be

D. older women have most of the power in the family

79. Women in extended families used to ______.

A. h elp each other with housework and childcare

B. live alone when they outlived their husbands

C. have two full-time jobs -- one outside the home and another inside

D. have freedom and power

80. Women with jobs are ______.

A. the most satisfied because they have freedom from house work

B. the most satisfied because they can earn money and be independent

C. the most satisfied because they make important decisions about family life

D. not satisfied because they are too busy and do not have much free time

Questions 81 to 85 are based on the following passage:

What is fire? For more than 2,500 years men have tried to find out. Modern scientists are still not sure they know exactly what fire is. But they feel they are close to knowing. They think that fire is a chemical action that occurs very quickly and gives off heat and light.

There are several kinds of chemical actions that can result in what we call fire. The most common is the chemical action between oxygen and a fuel. If heat and light are given off, you have a fire.

To make a fire, three things are needed. The first is a fuel. Two examples of fuel are wood and paper. Alcohol (酒精) is a common liquid fuel. In kitchen stoves, gas is often burned as a fuel.

Secondly, oxygen is needed. The fuel combines rapidly with oxygen. When wood or gas burns, the fuel combines rapidly with oxygen in the air.

The third thing needed to make a fire is heat. Paper does not catch fire by itself. Usually a burning match is applied to paper to make it catch fire. When the paper becomes hot enough, oxygen can begin to combine freely with it. The paper then bursts into flames. Every fuel has its own particular temperature at which it begins to burn.

How can fires be put out? There are three main ways in which a fire can be put out. In each, one of the three things needed for burning is removed.

The first way is to remove some of the fuel. For example, fire lanes (森林防火线) are often cut through forests. A fire lane is a wide, open path where trees and plants are removed. A forest fire is expected to burn out upon reaching a fire lane. That is because the fuel has been removed.

A second way of putting out a fire is to keep oxygen from getting to it. If there is no oxygen, the fire goes out. For example, a fire cannot burn in carbon dioxide. Some fire extinguishers (灭火器) cover a fire with carbon dioxide. In this way oxygen is kept away from the fire.

A third way to put fires out is to remove heat from the fire. That is why water is sprayed on fires. The water takes in heat from the burning materials and lowers their temperature. Once the temperature drops, the fuels stop burning.

81. According to the modern scientists, fire is something ______.

Questions 86 to 90 are based on the following passage:

Stamp collection was once considered a harmless and educational pastime (娱乐) for small boys. It still is -- but with a difference. Grandpa and grandma have joined the small boys, along with shoe clerks, waitresses, truck drivers, college professors, businessmen, presidents and kings. Stamp collecting has today grown into a big business.

All the really rare old stamps are already owned by collectors who refuse to part with them. But even if these owners were willing to sell, few people could afford to buy.

A stamp becomes valuable because it is "rare". Modern collectors with little money to spend have to create their own "rarities (稀有性)". One rarity that stamp collectors look for is an error in the stamp. The error may be so small that it cannot be seen with the naked eye (肉眼). If it is there, however, it makes the stamp more valuable.

Stamp collectors have another way of making their collection rare or unusual. They bring together as many examples as they can of a certain kind of stamp. What makes such a collection unusual is the time and the idea that went into making it. One may collect only stamps of one color. Another may collect stamps from a certain foreign country, or stamps connected with some person, place, or event. Still other collectors are interested in the tiny holes

along the edge of a stamp. Another thing that makes a stamp "rare" is its postmark (邮戳). Collectors go to a lot of trouble to have letters mailed to them from unusual places.

One of the most unusual postmarks is the tin can postmark. Many years ago a man lived all alone on an out-of-the-way island. He put his letters in a tin can and left the tin can at a dangerous place for a passing ship to pick up. Since few ships stopped, and the tin can could not hold many letters anyway, his postmarks were rare.

86. Grandpa and grandma have joined the small boys in collection stamps because ______.

A. even kings and presidents are also collecting stamps

B. they want to be with their grandsons

C. it is no longer a pastime for little boys

D. people can make a lot of money by buying and selling stamps

D. are anxious to sell them for a good price

88. Errors in the stamps ______.

A. may be too small for eyes to see

B. are usually wiped out by the stamp collectors

C. will keep the value of the stamps low

D. can not be seen at all

89. One of the ways that stamp collectors make their stamps unusual is to ______.

A. collect a large number of stamps according to a certain pattern

B. sell old stamps and buy new stamps

C. keep the valuable stamps only

D. spend time studying them

[专升本类试卷]专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷5.doc

[专升本类试卷]专升本英语(阅读)模拟试卷5 一、Part III Reading Comprehension Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by a number of comprehension questions. Read the passages and choose the best answer to each question. Then, mark your answer by blackening the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. 0 On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy(多泥的)water running down the slopes(斜坡)of a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes. Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say that the land is eroded(侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion. Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they need. Plants need water and salts from the soil. We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation(保护). One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall. Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting "steps" called terraces(梯田). Water carrying soil cannot run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow(流速)of the water. Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces. There are some other ways for soil conservation. 1 On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because______ . (A)there are no terraces on the slopes (B)there are no small plants on the slopes (C)it washes away soil from the slopes
