Chinatown around the USA

Chinatown in San Francisco

It is a true cultural wonder of America. Not only is it the most expansive Chinatown outside of China, but it is also the oldest one in the United States. There are countless events, restaurants, and cultural attractions to be found and there is no better place to celebrate the Chinese New Year!

Chinatown in New York City

It is second only to that of San Francisco. The incredible amount of people selling everything from food, to herbs and spices is an expert's lesson in how to bargain. You'll find the authentic (地道的)Chinese cooking at the city's first Chinese restaurant.

Chinatown in Los Angeles

If you're in California but can't make the trip up to San Francisco, SoCal( Southern California) can still provide you with a shining Chinatown to explore. The Chinatown in Los Angeles of today, however, is not the original Chinatown. The history of the construction, destruction, and reallocation (重新安置)of the Chinese in the city is a modest and inspiring story.

Chinatown in Honolulu

The story of Honolulu's Chinatown is one of total change. It developed from one of the worst neighborhoods in the city to one of the most culturally advanced. The Hawaiin Theatre, also known as “The Pride of the Pacific" , is the historical and entertainment crown jewel of the still-developing town. Here, you can enjoy many visual performances, from vaudeville(歌舞杂耍)to concerts. You can learn about the luckiest days of the Chinese zodiac calendar.

A. Chinatown in San Francisco.

B. Chinatown in New York City.

C. Chinatown in Los Angeles.

D. Chinatown in Honolulu.

22. What do we know about the Chinatown in New York City?

A. It has the longest history.

B. Cutting price is nowhere to be seen there.

C. We can enjoy typical Chinese food there.

23. What do Chinatown in Los Angeles and Chinatown in Honolulu have in common?

A. They are both highly developed.

B. They all experienced great changes.

C. They have been well preserved all the time.

D. They are true cultural wonders of America.

After fiercely challenging Ted Hughes's description of deaf children as " alert and simple” in a poem in his first collection, the deaf poet Raymond Antrobus has won the Ted Hughes award for poetry.

The 33-year-old British Jamaican, who has performed at Glastonbury and also works as a teacher, has received the £ 5 ,000 prize for his first work The Perseverance.Described as “fascinating”,the collection touches on family life, particularly the death of Antrobus's father, his diagnosis with deafness as a small child.

The poems often explore the nature of deafness, such as Dear Hearing World, which describes the discrimination Antrobus has encountered (遭遇)in the education system: “ I was a broken speaker, you were never a broken interpreter. ”

He once said: "When I was a small boy, I couldn't read, I couldn't write, I was slow to start walking. No one knew why this was happening until a phone started ringing in my mum's house and my mum said I was completely unaware of this phone. She just looked at me and she looked at the phone ringing and she heard it really loudly and I was completely unmoved, I didn't react."

The judges of the prize praised Antrobus. The poet Clare Shaw called his book "universally relevant" , while fellow poet Linton Kwesi Johnson described it as “ the most engaging collection of poems we have read in a long

time”. And the Rev Canon Mark Oakley said Antrobus was "passionate but speaking from his scars not his wounds—— this is a poet you sense very deeply that you can trust".

Antrobus was presented with his award at a ceremony on Wednesday evening, alongside the poet Wayne Holloway-Smith, who was chosen from 14 ,000 entries to win the £ 5 ,000 national poetry competition for his poem The Posh Mums are Boxing in the Square.

24. What can we know about Antrobus's childhood?

A. He began to write poems.

B. He was a slow learner.

C. He couldn't walk on his own.

D. He was very healthy.

25. Why did Antrobus win the award?

A. Because his poems were filled with passion.

B. Because his poems touched on family life.

C. Because his poems were about his own misfortune.

D. Because his poems appealed to people to understand the deaf'’s world.

26. Which words can best describe Antrobus ?

A. Confident and friendly.

B. Enthusiastic and humorous.

C. Strong-willed and trustworthy.

D. Caring and intelligent.

27. Which is the best title of the text?

A. An Award - winning Poem

B. Deaf Poet Wins Ted Hughes Prize

C. A Bom Poet and His Poems

D. An Inspiring Story of the Deaf

The ocean might seem like a quiet place, but listen carefully and you might just hear the sounds of the fish choir(合唱团).

Most of this underwater music comes from soloist fish, repeating the same calls over and over. But when the calls of different fish combine, they form a chorus.

Robert McCauley and colleagues at Curtin University in Australia, recorded sonic fish in the coastal waters off Port Hedland in Western Australia over an 18-month period, and identified seven distinct fish choruses, happening at dawn and at dusk. You can listen to three kinds of “calls” : the low “foghorn” call, the grunting call, and “ba-ba-ba” call from batfish.

“I've been listening to all kinds of fish songs for nearly 30 years now, and they still amaze me with their variety," says McCauley, who led the research.

Sound plays an important role in various fish behaviours such as reproduction, feeding and territorial disputes. Fish at night use calls to stay together to hunt, while fish that are active during the day use sound to defend their territory.

The recordings were captured by two sea-noise loggers: the first positioned near the Port Hedland shore and the second 21.5 kilometres away in offshore waters.

“This is a method that allows us to understand what's happening at Port Hedland for a year and a half,” says Steve Simpson, a British expert. “I don't know any diver that can stay down there that long!"

Listening to choruses over a long period of time allows scientists to monitor fish and their ecosystems, particularly in low visibility waters, such as those off Port Hedland.

“We are only just beginning to appreciate the complexity involved and still have only a rough idea of what is

For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each person to one qf the statements (A to G)given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Patricia: I went by Inter-Rail this summer with a group of friends from university. I think it worked very well, although a few of them said they'd never do it again—I guess it wasn r t quite like they thought it was going to be~not as comfortable probably. We usually slept in hostels or on the train so we were completely exhausted but 1 think we had a great time. Next year V 11 see if 1 can perhaps visit fewer places and not get so worn out. Davis: I traveled about 6,000 kilometres in four weeks with a couple of friends from college. We spent weeks planning out the route and all the places we were intending to go to. Would I do it again? Well, f d have to think carefully about that but, on the whole the trip was good for me as I was the official translator, which was great as V m normally a bit shy of talking to people 1 don't know. On the last night of the holiday they treated me to a really expensive meal for helping them out. It was terrific! Jenise: Well, I guess I had a good time now when I look back on it, and I saw eight countries in four weeks. Everything went well but I think that from now on 1' 11 probably choose to do something else. I want to meet local people rather than just people who work for the train service ! I did get to know quite a few other English and American students and they were great but it didn* t do much for my French and Gennan. Nigel: I think it's definitely the best way of getting around Europe even though you have to spend money on the Inter-Rail ticket before you leave. I have a friend who hitch-hikes and he says that's the only way to travel because it's free and you see more interesting places. But I knew I could jump on a train wherever I wanted in the morning, while he would still be standing in the rain hoping for a lift. So all in all I think I got the better deal, especially as 1 could take the night train and save on hotel bills. Hawk: F vc done it quite a few times now and V m used to the kind of problems that arisc—likc having to sleep in a park because the train arrived too late for me to get a hotel bed, and trying to keep to a tight budget. The mistake people often make is to just get off at the tourist spots. Try getting off the train at the little villages, like I do. They1 re usually fascinating and the people are friendlier, too. Even if they don't understand your miserable attempt at their language they still smile and nod.
