No signposts in the sea

Paraphrase

1. I was once so completely absorbed in the important affairs of the world that I devoted all my attention, time and energy to them and only occasionally did I allow myself a little rest by reading poetry or listening music.

2. Or maybe my suppressed inclination has been brought out under Laura’s unintentional influence.

3. I was as puritanical as a Pharisee and I viewed with contempt all those who lived a less practical life than my own and regarded them as creatures on the moon.

4. I firmly believed in uncompromising materialism which in my opinion represented the law of human progress.

When people claimed that they protested against damaging natural beauty out of unselfish motives, I suspected them and viewed them with contempt. I not only disbelieved people when they said things out of unselfish motives,

I also held them in contempt.

5. Just imagine how I have changed now. Here I stand, sentimental and sensitive, like an old unmarried woman painting

a water-color picture of the sunset.

6. I want to enjoy beauty to my heart’s content before I die.

7. At this moment I am not the middle-aged journalist that people believe me to be, spending a holiday on an ocean-going liner. I have now become a liberated person, bathed in magic waters, and I feel I am like Endymion, a young and strong youth who has a god for his father and gifted with the power to see the world inspired by the gods at Olympus.

8. I feel that I am weightless and totally absorbed by the night and feel at peace with the night.

9. I imagine devoted religions people must feel as clean and pure as I do now when they leave the solemn confessional after gaining pardon for their sins.

10. In the same way I let myself freely imagine what the innermost part of Laura

?s character presents. She looks so severe outwardly, but inwardly she is full of tenderness---tenderness like delicate flowers waiting for the daring to discover them.

11. We human beings ought to learn from the wise bird, knowing how far we can allow ourselves to go; knowing how much freedom of conduct we can allow ourselves to have.

12. Here I’m born anew, completely different from the past, changed excessively or to an unusual extent.

13. The Pacific Ocean alone is much larger than all the

continents combined.

14. A storm that lasted two days has made me extremely excited and happy, but above all,I love these idle days in

which I throw off all the qualities, perspectives, values and everything else that made me as what I was: I’m born anew.

1) He has a good eye for water-colors.

2) The daughter ventured to object to her parents' arrangement of her marriage.

3.Pressed by poverty, he took to stealing.

4) My long journey was beguiled with novels.

5) I suppose you have read Mark Twain.

6) He concentrated all his attention on this problem to the exclusion of all others.

7 ) Our problems are piling up. We must solve them as quickly as we can.

9) The sentries are relieved every four hours.

10) There was a touch of irony in his remark.

ll) Memories of childhood are gradually receding.

My fellow-passengers apparently do not share my admiration. ‘Drearee sorter cowst,' said an Australian. ‘Makes you Iong for a bit of green. '

Darkness falls, and there is nothing but the intermittent g1eam o f a 1iahthouse on a solitary promontory .

We rounded just such a cape towards sunset, the most easterly p oint of a continent, dramatically high and lonely, a great purple mountain overhung by a great purple cloud. The sea had turned t o a corresponding dusk of lavender . Aloofad on the top, the yell ow 1iaht revolved, steady, warning; I wondered what mortal con trolled it, in what must be one of the loneliest, most forbidding s pots on Earth. Haunted too, for many wrecks had piled up on the reefs in the past, when there was no beacon to guide them.

The Colonel joined us.

‘How would you care for that man's job?' he said. ‘I suppo se he sets relieved every so often?'

‘On the contrary, he refuses ever to leave. He is an Italian, an d he has been there for years and years, with a native woman for

his only company. Most people would think him crazy, but I mu st say I find it refreshing to think there are still a few odd fish lef t in the world.

This is the unexpected kind of remark that makes me like the Co lonel; there is a touch of rough poetry about him. I like also the out-of-the-way information which he imparts from time to time without insistence; he has traveled much, and has used his eyes and kept his ears open. I have discovered also that he knows quit e a lot about sea-birds; he puts me right about the different sorts of gull, and tells me very nicely that that couldn't possibly be an albatross , not in these waters.

The albatross, it appears, follows a ship only to a certain latitude and then turns back; it know show far it should go and no farthe r. How wise is the albatross! We might all take a lesson from hi m, knowing the latitude we can permit ourselves. Thus, and no f arther, can I foIlow Laura. I suspect also that there is quite a lot of lore stored away in the Colonel's otherwise not very interestin g mind. Laura likes him too, and although I prefer having her to myself I don't really resent it when he lounges up to make a thir d.

In all this great serenity of ocean it is seldom that we espy so mu ch as another ship; the jolly dolphins and the scratchy little flyin g-fish have the vast circle all to themselves, 'the Flying Fish, wh o has a part with the birds, ' and doubtless are glad to see the last of the monster which bears us into and out of sight. Our wake cl oses up and we might never have been. But it does happen from time to "Time that an island appears on the horizon, nameless to us and full of mystery, the peak of a submarine mountain range, lonely, unblemished , remote. Does one like islands because one unconsciously appropriates them, a small manageable domain in a large unmanageable world? I cannot tell why it should give m e such a queer sensation to reflect that that island has always bee n there (unless indeed it be no more than the work of the patient coral and will be there still, should I return to find it waiting for me. It is the same sensation as I have experienced in looking at a photograph of, say, some river valley of innermost China, and s een a boulder, and thought that if I could find myself transported

to that spot I could touch the reality of that particular piece of ro ck ... It is there. For me. I could sit on that very boulder . I explai n myself badly, and it is not a sensation I could expect anyone sa ve Laura to understand, but of such incommunicable quirks is th e private mind made up.

Well, the islands. I divert myself by inventing the life upon them , and am amused to find my imagination always turning towards the idyllic. This is the new Edmund Carr with a vengeance. If w e have seen a skiff sailing close in shore, I follow the fisherman as he beaches his craft in the little cove and gives a cry like a sea -bird to announce his coming. His woman meets him; they are y oung, and their skins of a golden-brown; she takes his catch fro m him. In their plaited hut there is nothing but health and love.

One night we passed two islands, steeply humped against faint r eflected moonlight; and on each of them, high up, shone a stead y yellow gleam.

‘Not lighthouses.' I said to Laura. ‘Villages.'

We gazed, as the ship slid by and the humps receded into darkne ss and even the lights were obscured by the shoulder of a hill, ne ver to be seen by us again. So peaceful and secret; so self-contai ned .

One of the ship's officers joined us, off duty.

Yes, 'he said, following our gaze. ‘One of them is a leper colon y and the other a penal settlement.' God, is there no escape fro m suffering and sin?

Laura and I amuse ourselves by watching for the green flash whi ch comes at the instant the sun disappears below the line of the.h orizon. This does not happen every day, for sky must be entirely clear of cloud and clouds seem very liable to gather along the pa th of the setting sun, but we are as pleased as children when our game succeeds. Laura claps her hands. Only a second does it las t, that streak of green light; we wait for it while the red ball, cut i n half as though by a knife, sinks to

its daily doom . Then come the twilight colours of sea and heave n (we have discovered the fallacy of saying that darkness falls s uddenly in these latitudes, at any rate on sea level), the wine pin k width of water merging into lawns of aquamarine , and the sky a tender of pink and blue. But the green flash is our chief deligh t.

‘creme de menthe , ' says Laura ‘Jade, ' I say.

‘ Emerald , ' says Laura. ' Jade is too opaque ‘Vicious virid ian , ' I say, not to be outdone .

'You always did lose yourself in the pleasure of words Edmun d. Say green as jealousy and be done with it.' ‘I have never kn own the meaning of jealousy.'

I am sorry to see the sun go, for one of the pleasures I have disc overed is the warmth of his touch on my skin. At home in Londo n I never noticed the weather, unless actually inconvenienced by fog or rain; I had no temptation to take a flying holiday to the S outh and understood little when people spoke or wrote of sunlig ht on white walls. Now the indolence of southern latitudes has c aptured me. I like to see dusky men sitting about doing nothing.

I like the footfall of naked feet in the dust, silent as a oat passing . I like turning a corner from the shade of a house into the full to

rrid glare of an open space. I put my hand on metal railings and snatch it away, burnt. But it is seldom that I go ashore.

I would never have believed in the simple bliss of being, day aft er day, at sea. Our ports of call are few, and when they do occur I resent them. I should like this empty existence to be prolonged beyond calculation. In the ship's library stands a large globe who se function so far as I am concerned is to reveal the proportion o f ocean to the landmasses of the troubled would; the Pacific alon e dwarfs all the continents put together. Blue, the colour of peac e. And then I like all the small noises of a ship: the faint creakin g, as of the saddle-leather to a horseman riding across turf , the s

lap of a rope, the hiss of sudden spray . I have been exhilarated b y two days of storm, but above all I love these long purposeless days in which I shed all that I have ever been.

Lesson 14 Speech on Hitler’s Invasion of the USSR

Speech on Hitler's Invasion of the U.S.S.R.

Winston S .Churchill

When I awoke on the morning of Sunday, the 22nd, the ne ws was brought to me of Hitler's invasion of Russia. This cha nged conviction into certainty. I had not the slightest doubt where our duty and our policy lay. Nor indeed what to say. T

here only remained the task of composing it. I asked that not ice should immediately be given that I would broad-cast at 9 o' clock that night. Presently General Dill, who had hastened down from London, came into my bedroom with detailed ne ws. The Germans had invaded Russia on an enormous front, had surprised a large portion of the Soviet Air Force ground ed on the airfields, and seemed to be driving forward with gr eat rapidity and violence. The Chief of the Imperial General Staff added, "I suppose they will be rounded up in hordes ."

I spent the day composing my statement. There was not ti me to consult the War Cabinet, nor was it necessary. I knew that we all felt the same on this issue. Mr. Eden, Lord Beaver brook, and Sir Stafford Cripps – he had left Moscow on the 10th – were also with me during the day. The following acc ount of this Sunday at Chequers by my Private Secretary, M r. Colville, who was on duty this weekend, may be of interest :

"On Saturday, June 21, I went down to Chequers just befo re dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Winant, Mr. and Mrs. Eden, and Ed ward Bridges were staying. During dinner Mr. Churchill sai d that a German attack on Russia was now certain, and he t hought that Hitler was counting on enlisting capitalist and R

ight Wing sympathies in this country and the U. S. A. Hitler was, however, wrong and we should go all out to help Russia. Winant said the same would be true of the U. S. A.

After dinner, when I was walking on the croquet lawn with Mr. Churchill, he reverted to this theme, and I asked wheth er for him, the arch anti-Communist, this was not bowing do wn in the House of Rimmon. Mr. Churchill replied, "Not at all. I have only one purpose, the destruction of Hitler, and m y life is much simplified thereby. It Hitler invaded Hell I wou ld make at least a favourable reference to the Devil in the Ho use of Commons. '

I was awoken at 4 a. m. the following morning by a telepho ne message from the F. O. to the effect that Germany had att acked Russia. The P. M. had always said that he was never t o be woken up for anything but Invasion (of England). I ther efore postponed telling him till 8 am. His only comment was, 'Tell the B.B.C. I will broadcast at 9 to – night. 'He began to prepare the speech at 11a. m., and except for luncheon

(= lunch), at which Sir Stafford Cripps, Lord Cranborne, and Lord Beaverbrook were present, he devoted the whole day to it… The speech was only ready at twenty minutes to n ine."

Exercise 1: Translate the following sentence into Chinese.(30%) The dominant purpose in starting the public enterprises had been public good and profit motive was secondary; however, of late the scenario has changed. With the liberalisation of markets the public undertakings are in direct competition with the private players and have to have profit motive in mind. If not, there have been criticisms by industry on the unequal treatment meted out to the private players. Here it is important to note the definition of "enterprise" under the Competition Act. It makes no distinction between a private and a public enterprise/undertaking. In fact it even includes a department of the Government which does not perform a "sovereign function". Functionally, the public undertakings have been broadly classified into four heads: ?Financial Institutions, such as Life Insurance Corporation of India, Reserve Bank of India, Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation Ltd, Film Finance Corporation Ltd, Unit Trust of India, Industrial Reconstruction Bank, etc. ?Promotional and Development Undertakings, such as Rehabilitation Housing Corporation Ltd, National Research Development Corporation Ltd, Food Corporation of India, Central Warehousing Corporation, National Small Industries Corporation Ltd, etc. ?Commercial and Industrial Undertakings, such as State Trading Corporation, Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd, Indian Airlines Corporation, Air India, etc. ?Public Utilities are those undertakings which render certain essential services to the people, like transportation, electricity, communications, energy, etc. The objective of such undertakings is to provide services to the community economically and efficiently and making profit is not the primary aim.

Life for these people is different from that for younger Americans. Most senior citizens retire, or no longer work full time. Also it is unusual for people of this age to live with their children and grandchildren. Grandparents tend to live in their own houses or apartments away from their families. For many senior citizens, the years after 65 are not enjoyable. They feel unproductive when they no longer work. Their lives lose meaning. In addition, they may feel lonely being away from their families and the contacts they had in their work. Moreover, they become more concerned with their health as they grow older. If they live in big cities, they often worry about their safety. Other senior citizens enjoy their lives. They feel free to do things they were not able to do when they were working and raising families. They now have time to enjoy hobbies and sports and travel. They associate with their fellow senior citizens who have common interests and equal free time. Many senior citizens move to retirement communities located in warm climates. Some senior citizens continue to work beyond retirement age. Many find new careers and professional opportunities after they retire. The number of senior citizens in the U. S. is increasing rapidly because people are living longer than before. The average life span for Americans is now more than 74 years. Because of their larger numbers and more active life
