A wise man was visiting a village with his students. He found a group of family members shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his students and asked: “Why do people shout in anger at each other?”

His students thought for a while, and one of them said: “Because when we lose our calm, we shout.”

“But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can just as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner,” said the wise man.

Students gave some other answers but none were any good.

“When two people are angry at each other, their hearts become distanced(疏远的),” the wise man explained. “To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the louder they will have to shout to hear each other and co ver that great distance.”

When they love each other even more, what happens? They don’t need to talk. They only look at each other and that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.”

Hi, everybody! I’m Max, now I'm studying in an international school in Canada. Students here also spend much time on homework. How difficult the homework is depends on (取决于) what subject you are learning.

For English, we usually put together presentations(展示). I will look for some information on the Internet. For example, I’m working on a one-minute presentation about recent Canadian news.

I read about lots of news, and I will choose one thing to write about. Doing presentations is a good way to practice speaking skills and build confidence(自信). I still feel shy talking in front of many people. But my English has really become better.

For geography and history, we usually do paper work and make posters. It takes a lot of time. We spent about a month on one article last year. We had to make outlines (提纲) and write out the main ideas. Our teacher fixed them and then we could start to write. For the posters, you can print or draw them. Last week, our teacher asked us to make a poster about our sense of place. So we put two pictures of our favorite places and wrote 10 words to describe them.

Science was very hard for me at first. And it took me an hour to read three pages. But as I learn more and more words, I understand it better. Even if I don’t understand all the words, I can

mostly guess what it is saying. So I get faster and faster at doing my homework.

No matter what homework you get, just try your best.

②Wait for the teacher to give some suggestions.

③Make an outline and write down the main ideas.

A. ①②③

B. ③②①

C. ③①②

D. ②③①

59. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 means ________.

D. the science homework

60. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Of all the subjects the writer likes science most.

B. The writer always tries her best to complete her homework.

C. Homework in Canada is more difficult than in China.

What can you do when someone hurts you? Most people may be angry or even fight with the one who hurts him or her. But it’s not a good idea. The best way is to forgive(原谅) them.

It is not easy for us to forgive people who hurt us, but it is p ossible. “ Forgiveness makes you more hopeful. And it is good for our health,” says Frederic, Ph D, the writer of the book called Forgive for God.

But how can we forgive others?

First, think of something beautiful and try to get yourself happy.

Second, don’t want others to say sorry to you. If the people hurt you, he or she won’t say sorry to you. They may just want to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way.

Third, try to see things in others’ shoes. You can write a letter to yourself from the offender’s(冒犯者) point. That can make you understand others better and make yourself happier.

You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as “a banana person”? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a “banana”, he or she is white in side—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.

They are overseas(海外的)Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民)of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.

But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression "to be in hot water" is one of them. It is a very old expression. "Hot water" was used five hundred years ago to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the way of throwing very hot water down on enemies who attacked a city, When we are in “hot water,” we are in trouble. It can be any kind of trouble-serious or not so serious. A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police, A young boy can be in hot water with his mother, if he walks in the house with dirty shoes. Students will be in hot water with teachers if they don't finish their homework.

Being in "deep water" is almost the same as being in hot water, when you are in deep water, you are in a difficult position. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. "Water over the dam(大坝)" is another

expression. It is something that is finished, It cannot be changed. The expression comes from the idea that water has flowed over a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is troubled by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

"Throwing cold water" is also an expression that deals with ideas or suggestions, it means that an idea isn't liked. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some

problems, but your wife "throws cold water" on the idea because she says a new car costs too much.

People blink their eyes tens of thousands of times every day, Scientists have long believed blinking can keep the eyes wet. But a new study suggests it has a more important purpose.

An international team of scientists studied the blinking of human eyelids. The team reported it to researchers from the University of California at Berkeley. The magazine Current Biology reported their findings.

The team said it found that blinking can make us focus on what we are seeing. It said that when we blink our eyelids, the eyeballs roll back into the place where they are. However, the researchers found the eyes don’t always return to the same position. Th ey say this causes the brain to tell the eye muscles to adjust(调整) our eyesight.

Garret Mauls was the lead writer of the report. He serves as an assistant professor of psychology (心理学) at Nan yang Technological University in Singapore. The researchers say that without such corrections we would not be able to see the things around us clearly.

Researchers say they asked volunteers to sit in a dark room while looking at a small dot on a piece of paper they used special cameras to follow the volunteer's blinks and eye movements. After each blink, the dot was moved a little to the right. The volunteers did not notice this, but the brain did. It followed the movement and directed the eye muscles to focus on the dot again. The dot was moved in this way 30 times before the volunteers' eyes changed their focus to the place where they thought it would be.

Dear Maliah and Sasha,

I know that you've both had a lot of fun these two years, going to picnics, eating all kinds of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have. But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, so now I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey.

When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me-about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn't seem so important any more. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn't be so important unless I knew that you had every chance for happiness. In the end, girls, that's why I ran for President: because of what I want for you and for every child in this country.

I want all our children to go to schools to know more about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college-even if their parents aren't rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them chances to realize their dreams.

I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience and humor as we prepare to start our new life together.

On the good side, digital technology( 数码技术) can connected a child to information and to a larger community. It can bring good chances for work. But on the bad side, it can also bring great harm and stress --- especially for a child who does not know how to use the internet correctly.

-not to open e-mail from people they don’t know;

-not to reply to hurtful or disturbing messages;

-not to get together with anyone they “meet” online.

Sun bears(马来熊)are the smallest of the world’s eight bears

species(物种). They have a black coat and a white or golden colour on

their bodies. Their homes are in the tropical(热带雨林)of Southeast

Asia. They live in trees and eat both plants and animals. They can grow

to be 1.4 metres in height and 65 kilograms in weight. They usually live

alone and are happy to spend most of their time by themselves.

Scientists studied sun bears in the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center. They found that although sun bears live alone, they have developed a surprising social skill. They can copy (模仿) other sun bear’s facial expression (面部表情) as a form of communication. They can even copy exact muscular (肌肉的) movements that other sun bears make- such as making a face.

The ability to copy facial expressions is found in humans, gorilla’s (大猩猩), some monkeys and some other animals. But until now, only humans and gorillas have the ability to exactly copy facial expressions. However, scientists found that sun bears can copy facial expression as well as humans and gorillas. This surprised them because sun bears are alone and they have no close relationship with human beings.

Although they live alone in the wild, the sun bears in the study often played gently with each other. Sometimes they played with faster actions as hitting and biting. Scientists are still not sure what messages the sun bears were sending to one another.

34. According to the passage, where do sun bears usually live?

A. In caves.

B. In trees.

C. By the river.

D. On the ice.

35. From the passage, we can learn something about sun bears EXCEPT that ______________.

A. they like to live alone in the wild and only eat animals

B. they can copy other sun bears’ facial expres sions for communications

C. they can copy exact muscular movements of other sun bears

D. they have no close relationship with human beings

36. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?

A. A warm home on the earth

B. A brave animal in the forest

C. A new friend of human beings

D. A surprising skill of sun bears

A) 31-33 BAC B) 34-36 BAD

My name is Wei Hua and I'm a sporting robot of the 23rd century. I'm clever at high flying exercises. I jump from spaceships and as I fall, I turn, dive, circle and dance until I softly land as close as I can to the finishing line.

Robot competitions in the 23rd century are truly a popular sport. Fans from all over China watch their hand-held TVs when a competition comes on. Last time I took part in the 78th Olympics and I won the silver medal for my performance.

This year I was very proud to be chosen again. I wanted to meet robots from other countries and explore ideas about our sport. However, my programmer fell ill the week before we were leaving. It was very painful for her and I felt very scared. I didn't feel so confident that I would win.

The day of the competition was rather cold for my legs and my special oil began to freeze. I stopped for a moment(which I shouldn't)before I jumped from the starting place on a little spaceship, then I began my performance. At the correct moment I tried to open my parachute(降落伞)but there was a problem. It only opened a little. I began to fall faster and faster so that I could not turn, dive, circle or dance. My heart stopped beating as I landed heavily on a mountain covered with snow.

This is why I am writing to you from my hospital bed with two broken legs and a weak head.

I did not win anything at the Olympics after all. I need the factory to build me two new legs and an even bigger head. Then I will be able to compete once more. Let's hope for greater success in the next Olympics!

( ) 39. Wei Hua finished _________ in the 78th Olympics high flying sport.

A. first

B. second

A. His programmer was sick.

B. He had a great pain in his leg.

C. He himself fell ill before they were leaving.

D. He couldn't meet robots from other countries.

( ) 41. According to Paragraph 3, how many reasons led to Wei Hua's failure in the competition?

A. One.

B. Two.

C. Three.

D. Four.

( ) 42. How is Wei Hua feeling now?

A. Full of hope.

B. Unsure about himself.

C. Heart-broken.

D. Satisfied with his result this year.
