A

It is growing dark as Daniel and I walk along the path. “I would be afraid to be out at this time in London,” he says. “I would be frightened of being attacked.”

I am spending the day with 16-year-old Daniel and six other pupils from Burlington Danes School on a farm in Bath. Most of them have never been in the countryside, and have spent the past week feeding cows and going for long winter walks.

They are here on Jamie’s Farm. Started by Feilden, it aims to give inner-city children the experience of rural life. The children, many of whom have been in gangs(犯罪团伙) or in trouble with the police, stay for a week in the Feildens’ family home. According to Feilden, not a single item has been lost, stolen or broken in the farm. As his mother says, “I think the beauty here helps them.” Or as 16-year-old Daniel says, “I like to be here. It smells all fresh.”

The pupils rise early to feed the cows, ping, chickens and horses, before eating a cooked breakfast. Following this comes more farm work, lunch, more work, a long walk, supper and finally bed. They love it. “It is great not having a phone,” explains one. “I focus so much better.” Many speak of how the diet has changed their mood and others of how much they like feeding the animals.

The idea for the farm came when Feilden was working as a teacher in a “challenging” Croy don school. Most of the pupils had never been beyond the town, let alone into the countryside. Feilden felt farming could help. “It gave the pupils something to do besides fighting.” It is, of course, not a panacea — a troubled child will still be a troubled child —but Feilden says it still worthwhile. “If all we achieve is to show them the beauty of the countryside, then I think we’ve achieved a lot.”

56. Why does Feilden start Jamie’s Farm?

A. To help troubled children become good

B. To promote the beautiful scenery there

C. To help the police find gangs

D. To give children the chance to experience rural life

57. According to Feilden’s mother, the children didn’t cause any trouble while

staying in the farm because .

A. it smells fresh on the farm

The time of year a baby is born can shape what profession they will embark on in later life, a new study has suggested. Being born in a certain month appears to indicate the statistical likelihood of what job a person will end up with, the study by the Office for National Statistics found.

Researchers have uncovered that the month in which babies are born could also

affect everything from intelligence to length of life. A child born in December is more likely to become a dentist while someone whose birthday falls in January will tend to a debt collector, they found.

A February birth appears to increase the chances of being an artist while March babies appear to go on to become pilots. Meanwhile, April and May are said to have a fairly even spread of professions, births in the summer months mean a much lower chance of becoming a high-earning football player, doctor or dentist. The study was derived by researchers who analyzed the birth months of people in 19 separate occupations using information from the last census, the Daily Mail reported. Although these trends may be difficult to explain, correlations between birth months and specific health problems have a scientific basis.

Spring babies are at greater risk of illnesses including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, asthma and autism. They may also be less clever than classmates born in other parts of the year.

63. What does the underlined phrase “embark on” refer to?

A. be occupied in

B. keep in touch with C land on D. resign from

64. We can learn from the text that______.

A. Spring babies may have the bigger chance to get ill

B. People born in the summer months are more likely to get highly paid

D. the choice of profession for April and May is very narrow

65. What can be included from the passage?

A. People born in Autumn would be more successful than those born in Spring

B. The fate has been already decided when people are born

C. There exist connections between birth date and occupations

D. The time of year one is born decides which specific health problems one has 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项In many parts of the world, cars play an important role in daily life and many societies would not exist without them. 66 But this is the prediction made by a team of transport researchers who are taken seriously, not only by government but also by car manufacturers.

The Human Science and Advanced Technology Institute at Loughborough in the UK is part of an international research program. 67 That will mean much saving, no accidents and better use of roads. The super-intelligent car in the future will drive itself.

68 Instead, we will have a choice of cars and change them as frequently as we change our clothing.

According to Dr. David Davis, who leads the research team, these predictions are based on the rising cost of the car culture, which had blocked up our cities, polluted our air, and caused more deaths than both world wars put together.

Davis says, cars will be fitted with some intelligent devices(装置) to regulate(调节) the distance between one car and another. 69 computers are much safer drivers than people, so cars in a road train will be able to drive much closer together than cars driven by people.

By 2010, Dr. David Davis believes, car technology will give motorists a clear view of the road, whatever the weather conditions, by projecting an image of the road ahead on to the car’s windscreen. 70 Cars will be connected by an electronic tow bar to the car in front to form “road-trains”. “The front vehicle in such a train burns the norma l amount.”says Davis. “but all the others in the train would burn about ten percent of the normal amount, and so produce about ten percent of the pollution.”

A.The team there believes that by 2030 all cars will be computerized.

B.They believe that cars will become more important in 20 years.

C.And it will not be owned by one individual.

D.And by 2030, cars will travel in line, linked to each other electronically.

E.So the idea that in 20 years’ time, no one will own cars may be hard to believe.

F.Every driver will use less fuel in the car he owns.

G.The car will automatically speed up, or slow down, to match the speed of the car in front.
