You are near-sighted. You wear glasses. You have to go to glass-makers to have your lenses changed. Josh Silver, a professor of physics at Oxford University, may be able to help you out.

He has invented a pair of special glasses. Wearers can correct their vision by changing the lens themselves.

The glasses are based on a simple principle: The fatter a lens, the more powerful it becomes.

Inside the plastic lenses are two clear bags filled with fluid. The wearer can add or reduce the amount of fluid with a syringe (注射器). It changes the power of the lens.

The invention may help near-sighted people in the developing world greatly. In Britain there is one optometrist (验光师) for every 4,500 people. In sub-Saharan Africa the ratio is

The key to reaching or staying at a healthy weight is to do regular exercise. Some people think exercise needs lots of effort or planning. But that’s not true. In fact, the best way to work it into our lives is by making small changes that will become part of daily life.

Teens should exercise 60 minutes or more a day. As long as you’re getting your body moving, you don’t have to do complicated exercises or go to the gym every day. Make exercise a habit by doing some every day. But, most of us are busy and 60 minutes a day seems like a lot of time. The good news is that it’s OK to divide it into shorter “exercise breaks” throughout the day. You can get up 15 minutes early and do some exercise. Fast walk or jog for 15 minutes at lunch. Do the same thing after school—or walk or bike home. After taking the stairs and walking between classes during the day, you’ve probably reached your 60 minutes.

Here are some simple ways to help you easily make exercise a healthy habit:

▲Start today: go outside for a walk.

▲Take the stairs instead of the lift.

▲Instead of taking a car or bus, walk or bike to places bike the school or a friend’s house.

▲Limit your time watching TV, using the computer, or playing video games.

1. According to the passage, does doing exercise need lots of effort or planing?

No, it doesn’t.

2. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?

3. How long should teens do exercise a day?

60 minutes or more

4. If John is quite busy, how can he do 60 minutes of exercise a day?

5. What’s the main idea of this passage?

How to make exercise be part of daily life.

These days, we are very sad to hear the news “severe drought in southwest China”. When we learn that a villager loses his life on his way to look for water for other villagers, when we hear that an old lady drinks dirty water to say alive, when we see cracks at the bottom of dry lakes, when we see Asia’s biggest waterfall, Huangguoshu get narrower, when we know some villagers in Yunnan are travelling for three hours to try to find water in valleys, our hearts are filled with sorrow.

We Chinese must take action and unite once again. The army has been sent to help fight againest the water shortages. And lots of people raise money to help the people there. Luckily there has been rain these days. Though a day or a week of rainfall is not enough to end the drought, at least there is water coming to the dried-up land, which can help a lot.

The severe drought is not a good thing, but through it, we can learn how important the environment is to this world. We should stop polluting the air right away. Besides, we should take measures to protect the forests and plant as many trees as possible. If we don’t stop our constant damage to nature and let her have a rest, she will punish us again.

Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some suggestions for you to bridge generation gap(代沟). Don't argue with your parents. Don't get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them You can't express(表达)yourself well if you are angry. Go to some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter. Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree(有分歧) on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a car. They argued over it, but finally they came to a compromise. Michael bought the car, but only drove it on certain days. Of course your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong. Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life. A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try. 2020届中考英语阅读理解50篇(含答案)

2020届中考英语阅读理解50篇 (绝对精品训练题,接近实战考题,值得下载练习) 1 When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul. Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part—and throw away the rest. Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw t he rest away. 1. We learned from the second paragraph that the writer and his father were feeling ______. A. relaxed B. worried C. hungry D. proud 2. How did the writer and his father eat the watermelon? A. They ate it in a polite way. B. They only ate its best part. C. They ate every part of it. D. They shared only one piece. 3. In the eyes of the writer’s father, Bernie ______. A. was just a rich businessman B. worked hard all the time C. lived a rich but healthy life D. knew how to make money

That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter (笑声)Clubs around the world and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. "Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day," says Dr. Kataria. "Everyone is naturally good at laughing-it's the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives." There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over l,300 in the world. Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%. So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha.” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it worked! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed-and comfortable I felt. So if you're under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results! (1)The first Laughter Club was started in __________. A. India B. America C. Britain D. After ten days.(5)The article mainly tells us __________.

中考英语英语阅读理解精选附答案

中考英语英语阅读理解精选附答案 一、英语阅读理解专项练习试卷 1.阅读理解 Earlier this year, China achieved a new milestone (里程碑) in space research. On January 3, 2019, Chang'e-4 became the first lunar probe (月球探测器) in history to successfully land on the far side of the moon. The Earth's gravity (重力) slows the moon's rotation (自转), matching it to the speed of its orbit (公转). Therefore, the far side of the moon is almost "dark" and has never been seen. It's this sense of the unknown that makes the far side of the moon such an interesting place for scientific and space research. Being blown by solar (太阳的) winds, the far side may have the special minerals (矿物质). For this reason, Chang'e-4 will study the effect of solar winds on the lunar surface and any mineral found by the spacecraft. Chang'e-4 is also carrying flower seeds, potatoes and silkworm eggs to see whether life is possible on the moon. If it is, then the moon will become a possible choice for space travel in the future. However, research of the "dark" side isn't easy. As the far side is blocked(阻断) off from us, radio noise coming off Earth is also blocked. This is why China's relay satellite (中继卫星) Queqiao was sent up in May, 2018. Thanks to Queqiao, the communication problem between Earth and Chang'e-4 has been well solved. Power supply (电源供应) is also a challenge to the task. Chang'e-4 gets energy from the sun through its solar panels. As we know, a lunar day has the length (长度) of 28 Earth days. After Chang'e-4 was sent up on December 8, 2018, it took the probe over 20 days to orbit the moon to be in a position to be able to land in moon daylight and use its solar panels. Luckily, everything goes well, Chang'e-4 has worked on the "dark" side for over 5 months.
