A fellow speaker from California named Geri flew to Japan, in her favorite jeans and a casual jacket, to give her first speech. Fourteen hours later,

four perfectly dressed Japanese gentlemen greeted her at Narita Airport. Smiling and bowing low, they handed her their business cards. With her bag in one hand. Geri took their cards with the other. She thanked them, glanced briefly at the cards, and put them into her jeans pocket quickly.

When the five of them arrived at the hotel, they invited Geri to tea in

the lobby(大厅). While sipping tea, the gentlemen presented her with a small gift which she eagerly opened, She was thrilled with the gift and shouted excitedly, ” Oh, it’s beautiful!”

At this point, the four Japanese gentlemen stood up and, bowing only very slightly, said “Sayonara” and left immediately. Poor Geri was left astonished. What did she do wrong

Everything! Her jeans were the first gaffe. Even if you're coming off a bicycle in Japan, you do not meet clients(客人) casually dressed. The second

mistake was Geri's handling of their business cards rudely. In Japan, the business card is one of the most important communicative tools. It is always presented and accepted respectfully with both hands. However, Geri put their cards away much too quickly. In Japan, people use business cards as a conversation starter. You chat about each other's cards and work and do not put theirs away until they gently and respectfully place yours in safe keeping. Putting it carelessly into her jeans pocket was the ultimate disrespect.

Then, the fourth horror of horrors was that Geri should not have opened the gift in front of her clients. In a land where saving face is critical, it would be embarrassing to discover the gift they gave was not as nice as the one they received. What is worse. Geri hadn't even given them a gift!

41. In the four Japanese gentlemen's eyes, Geri took their cards________.

A. excitedly

B. dis respect fully

C. politely

D. perfectly

42. Why did the four Japanese gentlemen leave Geri suddenly

B. Because they had finished the task.

C. Because Geri had something more important to do.

D. Because Geri felt embarrassed.

Poor Geri was left astonished. What did she do wrong

Former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874-1965) once said, ” We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” These are certainly words that millions of volunteers around the world could agree with.

In the US, April is National Volunteer Month, which recognizes and thanks volunteers who lend their time, talent, and support to causes(事业) they care about.

*

Volunteering means choosing to work without being paid for it, People who volunteer spend their time doing things they feel strongly about. For example, animal lovers may volunteer at an animal shelter to help improve the treatment and well-being of animals.

For students, valuable lessons may also be learned by volunteering. Take Andrew Makhoul, a sophomore(大二学生) at the University of Pennsylvania, as an example. Makhoul didn't spend the 2012 spring break partying. Unlike his classmates, who planned on relaxing after a term of hard work. the 19-year-old decided to do something for people less fortunate than himself.

He traveled to an orphanage(孤儿院) in Guatemala in Central America. The orphanage is in one of the poorest and most violent parts of the country, and depends on volunteers to stay open.

Makhoul doesn't speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn't a problem: “You communicated with love,” according to an article on his university’s website, ” you could see love when you looked in their eyes,”

Makhoull's first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he'd be back soon-because he saw love and hope

US author Sherry Anderson once wrote, “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re wort hless, but because they're priceless.” And this is perhaps why volunteers all around the world keep doing what they do.

46. Why is Winston Churchill mentioned in the first paragraph

A. To lead in the topic

B. To sum up the main idea.

C. To teach readers a lesson

D. To involve readers in a story.

47. According to the passage, why is the National Volunteer Month held in the US

A. To collect money for the volunteers

B. To offer care about the causes of volunteers.

C. To encourage more to become volunteers

D. To appreciate感谢 the work of volunteers.

In the US, April is National Volunteer Month, which recognizes and thanks volunteers who lend their time, talent, and support to causes(事业) they care about.

48. How did Makhoul spend the 2012 spring break

D. He visited an orphanage

3. Where does the conversation probably take place? 7. What does the man mean at last? 18. What had the speaker thought of his first job interview? 20. What contributed to the speaker’s success? (It can be inferred that…)

或是I like she。

A wide variety of activities 2. The word field refers to ________. A , a place on which farmers work B. A room where scientists work C, a place where vegetables grow D. Area covering an subject of study 3. 4. 5. Where was the author’s grandmother’s shop ? A.. Passage two: “ Are you too stupid to do anything right?” These words --- said by a woman to a little boy who was evidently her son--- were spoken because he had walked away from her.

And they were said at a volume high enough that all the strangers nearby could hear. Chastised, the boy returned quietly to the woman’s side, his eyes downcast. Not a big moment, perhaps.yet small moments sometimes last a very long time. And a few words---though they mean little at the time to the people who say them---can have enormous power. “Are you too stupid to do anything right?” words like that can echo. I recently heard a story from a man named Malcolm Dalkoff. He’s 48; for the last 24 years he has been a professional writer, mostly in advertising. Here is what he told me: As a boy in Rock Island, Ill., Dalkoff was terribly insecure and shy. He had few friends and no self-confidence. Then one day in October 1965, hes high-school English teach, Ruth Brauch, gave he class an assignment. The students had been reading “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Now they were to write their own chapter that would follow the last chapter of the novel. Dalkoff wrote his chapter and turned it in. Today he cannot recall anything special about the chapter he wrote, or what grade Mrs. Brauch gave him. What he does remember---what he will never forget----are the four words Mrs. Brauch wrote in the margin of the paper: “ This is good writing.” Four words. They changed his life. “Until I read these words, I had no idea of who I was or what I was going to be,” he said. “After reading her note, I went home and wrote a short story, something I had always dreamed of doing but never believed I could do.” Over the rest of that year in school, he wrote many short stories and always brought them to school for Mrs. Brauch to evaluate. She was encouraging, tough and honest. “She was just what I needed,” Dalkoff said. He was named co-editor of his high-school newspaper. His confidence grew; his horizons broadened; he started off on a successful, fulfilling life. Dalkoff is convinced that none of this would have happened had that woman not written those four words in the margin of his paper. For his 30th high-school reunion, Dalkoff went back and visited Mrs. Brauch, who had retired. He told her what her four words had done for him. He told her that because she had given him the confidence to be a writer, he had been able to pass that confidence on to the woman who would become his wife, who became a writer herself. He told Mrs. Brauch that a young woman in his office, who was working in the evenings toward a high-school-equivalency diploma, had come to him for advice and assistance. She respected him because he was a writer--- that is why she turned to him. Mrs. Brauch was especially moved by the story of helping the young woman. “At
