If you want your land to keep fertile, you must try to stop soil from being carried away by water or wind. When soil is taken away by flowing water or blowing winds, we call it soil erosion. Ways have been found to stop soil erosion, and this is known as soil conservation. One way of stopping soil erosion is to grow small plants such as grass. These plants are referred to as cover crops, whose roots hold the soil tightly together. The rain water can not wash away the soil. When trees and tall bushes are planted at the edges of an open field, soil erosion by strong winds can not take place. The trees and bushes, which act as a very big and firm wall, protect the open land from the winds. The way to stop soil erosion on slopes is to build terraces(梯田)on the slope of hillside and mountainside. When the slope of a hills ide is cut into “step”, water carrying soil can not run straight down the terraces, which are used to slow down the speed of the flowing water containing

much soil in it. In this way most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces, with much soil in it.

21. What takes place in soil erosion?

O· Henry was a pen name used by an American writer of short stories. His real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born in North Carolina in 1862. As a young boy he lived an exciting life. He did not go to school for very long, but he managed to teach himself everything he needed to know. When he was about 20 years old, O· Henry went to Texas, where he tried different jobs, he first worked on a newspaper, and then had a job in a bank. When some money went missing from the bank, O· Henry was believed to have stolen it. Because of that, he was sent to prison. During the three years in prison, he learned to write short stories. After he got out of prison, he went to New York and continued writing. He wrote mostly about New York and the life of the poor there. People liked his stories, because

simple as the tales were, they would finish with a sudden change at the end, to the readers’ surprise.

Can dogs and cats get along well in the same home? People who are thinking about getting a dog as a friend for their cat are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found that if the cat is taken back home before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. In two-thirds of the homes cats and dogs have a good relationship.

However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression(侵略,好斗) and fighting were found in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body languages are just different. For example, when a cat turns its head away it means aggression, while a dog doing the same means submission(顺从).

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers found a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “Dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “Cat”.

What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to become smarter. They can learn to read each other’s body languages, suggesting that the two may have mo re in common than was expected. Once familiar with each other’s body language, cats and dogs can play together, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa.

The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets — to people who don’t get along we ll, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

Modern zoos are different from those built fifty years ago. Those zoos were places where people could go to see animals from many parts of the world. The animals lived in cages with iron bars. Although the zoo keepers took good care of them, many of the animals did not feel comfortable, and they often felt ill.

In modern zoos, people can see animals in more natural conditions. The animals are given more freedom in nature. Even the appearance of zoos has changed. Trees and grass grow in cages, and water flows through the places the animal live in. There are few bars; instead,

there is often a deep ditch, filled with water, which surrounds a space where several sorts of animals live together as they world naturally. In an American zoo, the visitor can walk through a huge special cage that is filled with trees, some small animals and many birds, and large enough for birds to live naturally. In a zoo in New York, with the use of special light, people can observe certain animals that are active only at night, when most zoos are closed. Some zoos have special places for visitors to watch animals that live in the desert or under water.

Modern zoos not only show animals to visitors, but also keep and save rare animals. For this reason, fifty years from now, the grandchildren of today’s visitors will still be able to enjoy watching these animals

Good morning! Boys and girls,

As we know, World Reading Day which falls on April 23rd is drawing near. The purpose of the global festival is to promote reading and publishing. Nowadays,a lot of students prefer to spend much time in watching TV and they are crazy about Internet. So,most of them don't have enough time to read books. And still worse, they don't like reading. However, reading is necessary. I firmly think that by reading, we not only enrich our life, and broaden our horizons but also learn to perfect our personality. Now that reading is good for us, let’s

develop a good habit of reading. I strongly suggest that every one of us should read at least one or two good books every term.
