ⅡReading Comprehension(40points, two points for each)

Passage One

Peopl e used to say, “The hand that rocks(摇)the cradle(摇篮)rules the world.”and “Behind every successful man there is a woman.”

Both these sayings mean the same thing. Men rule the world, but their mothers and wives rule them .

Most American women wish to make their husbands and sons successful, but some of them want more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work they want to be better paid. They want to be as successful as men.

The American women’s liberation movement was started by women who didn’t w ant to stand behind successful men. They wanted to stand beside men, with the same chance for success. They refused to work side by side with men who do the same work for a higher pay.

A liberated woman must be proud of being a woman and have confidence in herself. If somebody says to her, “You have come a long way, baby.”she will smile and answer, “Not nearly as far as I’m going to go, baby!”

This movement is quite new, and many American women don’t agree yet. But it has already made some important chang es in women’s lives---in men’s lives, too.

lives.

3.According to the passage, many American women today are _______.

A.unwilling to work side by side with men

B.working at easier jobs than men

C.still going a long way to work

D.willing to be less important than men as they used to

4.“Not nearly as far as I’m going to go” (Para. 5, L.3) means_______.

A.I’m still going to work farther away from home

B.I’m not going to work far away from home

C.I’m not satisfied with what I’ve done

D.What I have done is not far from success

5.The American women’s liberation movement _______.

A.still has a long way to go

B.is a failure

C.was started by many successful women

D.is a new thing not accepted by the writer

Passage Three

Today anyone will accept money in exchange for goods and services. But people used to use to buy food, furniture, books, bicycles and hundreds of others they need or want. When they work, they usually get paid in money.

Most of the money today is made of metal or paper. But people used to use all kinds of things as money. One of the first kinds of money was shells. Shells were not the only things used as money. In China, cloth and knives were used. In the Philippine Islands, rice was used as money. In parts of Africa, cattle were one of the earliest kinds of money. Other animals were used as money, too.

The first metal coins were made in China. They were round and had a square hole in the center. People strung them together and carried them from place to place.

Different countries have used different metals and designs for their money. The first coins in England were made of tin. Sweden and Russia used copper to make their money. Later, other countries began to make coins of gold and silver.

But even gold and silver were inconvenient if you had to buy something expensive. Again the Chinese thought of a way to improve money. They began to use paper money. The first paper money looked more like a note from one person to another than paper money used today.

Money has had an interesting history from the days of shell money until today.

11. Which of the following can be cited as an example of the use of money in exchange for services?

A. To sell a bicycle for $20

B. To get some money for old books at a garage sale.

C. To buy things you need or want

D. To get paid for your work.

12. According to the passage, where was rice used as money in history?

A In the Philippines.

B In China

C In Africa

D In America

13. According to the passage, why did ancient Chinese coins have a square hole in the center?

A. Because it would be easier to put them together and carry them around.

B. Because it would be lighter for people to carry them from place to place.

C. Because people wanted to make it look nicer.

D. Because people wanted to save the expensive metal they were made from.

14. It can be inferred from the passage that the reason why even gold and silver were inconvenient if

you had to buy something expensive is _________.

A. that they are easy to steal

B. that they are difficult for people to obtain

C. that they are not easy to carry around

D. that they themselves are expensive, too

15. Which do you choose as the best title for this passage?

A Money and Its Uses

B Different Things Used as Money

C. Different Countries, Different Money D The History of Money

Passage Four

The word “sport” first meant something that people did in their spare time. Later it often meant hunting wild animals and birds. About a hundred years ago the word was used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today .People spend a lot of their spare time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Such people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be such sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best ones can make a lot of money. For example, a football player in England earns more than 50 000 pounds in a year. Of course, only a few sportsmen can earn as much as that.

It is possible for middle class people to engage in sports like golf, tennis and motor-racing. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is this: the star can earn more money from advertising than from sport.

An advertisement for sports equipment does not simply say “Buy our things.” It says, “Buy the same shirt and shoes as…” Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and food. T hey allow the companies to use their names or a photo of them and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.

16.The word “sport” now usually means _______.

A something done by sportsmen in their spare time

B hunting wild animals and birds

C organized games

D school sports and games

17. A professional sportsman is someone who _______.

A makes money in his spare time

B play all the time

C earns money by playing a sport

D play for his country and the people

18. Most people spend a lot of their spare time playing a sport because they _______.

A would like to

B have to do so

C want to earn some money

D will be stars

19. Famous sportsmen perhaps earn more money from________.

A sport

B advertising

C football

D his country

20. Why do the companies pay the famous sportsmen? Because they _______.

A like the sportsmen

B are asked to do so

C would buy the same shirt

D want to sell more of their things
