She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last forever. But, at nearly 500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa.

The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre Museum(卢浮宫) where it is housed.

“The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,” the museum said. Visitors have noticed changes but repairing the world's most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state.

Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, and many are attracted by the mystery of her smile. "It is very interesting that when you're not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops," said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. "It's because direct vision is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows. "

However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France’s King Francis I 1519.

In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later. During World War ll ,French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.

Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell.

No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is finally, the most telling "interpretation" of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting (背诵)it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than "analyzing" it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is "a criticism of life", and "a heightening (提升)of life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those, who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

D.sometimes the sound of the poem represents the meaning of it

33. What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply (暗示)?

A.The teaching of poetry is more important than the teaching of any other subject.

B.The teaching of poetry should have been much more stressed.

C.One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry.

D.Poetry is the foundation of all languages and literature courses.

The heavy rain began at mid-night. The people of Jackson, Ohio awoke to the sound and then went back to sleep. The next day the rain continued, and the water began to rise. People left their homes to move to higher ground without taking anything. People watched as dogs, cats, cows and other animals were swept away. They felt helpless.

Susan returned to her school the following Monday. She told the story to her students and showed them pictures from the newspaper. Her students took action. They began raising money for the flood victims. They sold candy and wrote letters to the community asking for donations. Even first-graders donated money. Mountains of clothes, furniture and food piled up. Susan's class

made Easter baskets from shoe-boxes and filled them with candy and toys as well as toothpaste, soap, and shampoo.

She and I put the Easter baskets into her mom’s car. On the trip, I wondered what I would see and I felt nervous when we arrived. No carpet, furniture, plumbing or appliances remained. Knowing that only days ago this had been someone's home pained my heart.

We drove from house to house, knocking on doors, ready to begin our mission. I wonder :would families who had been devastated by floodwater want an Easter basket? Their faces lit up as they opened their gifts. As we entered one home and gave the gift to a couple, the man opened the box and began to cry. "I can't believe those kids did this. Let me give you some money for their school." As I glanced at what was left in this home, I could not believe his generous spirit. He finally agreed to write a thank-you note instead.

My heart was warmed as I played the small role of messenger in his tribute to the goodness of the human spirit. So often we hear of the shortcomings of youth, but these youngsters answered

a cry for help with their generosity and love .

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s,we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap, and drove a white truck. As a five-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer(硬币兑换器) fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery, and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese and eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note, “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery,”and put it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There was a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr Basille even had a key to my house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we could box indoors, So that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr Basille from time to time, taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allow the production of cheaper milk, so making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides, milk is for sale everywhere. And it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it home and fixed it on the back porch(门廊). Every so often my son’s friends will ask what it is, so I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milk man who brought us friendship along with his milk.

A.to satisfy the boy’s curiosity(好奇心)

D.to please his mother

42.If they needed to change their order, they should____

A.call the milkman

B.leave a note in the box

C.wait for the milk

D.leave a note on the door

43.Why is there no longer milk delivery today?

A.It is not allowed by the law.

B.Its service is getting poor.

C.Nobody wants to be a milkman now.

D.It has been driven out of the market.

44.Why did writer bring back home an old milk box?

A.He planted flowers in it.

B.He missed the good old days.

C.He needed it for his milk bottles.

D.He wanted to tell interesting stories.

45.What can be inferred(推断) from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy’s house?
