For hundreds of years, the people of a Scottish town believed that a dinosaur-like monster lived in a nearby lake called Loch Ness. Many said they saw the creature, but no one could prove it was real.

In 1934, a London doctor, Robert Kenneth Wilson, gave a newspaper a photo of the monster. He took the picture, he said, when he suddenly saw the animal in the lake one morning. The news travelled around the world. People came from everywhere to see this creature, now called the “Loch Ness Monster”. Then, in 1993, a man named Christian Spurling surprised everyone. He said the photo of the Loch Ness Monster was a fake. He and some friends created the famous picture themselves, and then Wilson gave it to the newspaper as a practical joke.

Today, tricks and jokes like this are common, and many are spread using e-mail or micro-blog. Some can be funny, but others can cause trouble. In August, 2000, an e-mail was sent from a large British supermarket chain—Safeway—to thousands of its customers. It said, “Store prices are going to increase 25 p ercent. If you don’t like this, go to another store.” It was signed, “the Safeway Team”. The e-mail upset ma ny of Safeway’s customers and caused big problems for the supermarket. Later, Safeway discovered what happened. Someone broke into the company’s web site and sent the fake e-mail.

Not all the tricks are as bad as this one. Some mak e us laugh, and others surprise us. In the end, they all show us that seeing is not always believing.

Before I came to England, I’d read about English customs (习俗). For example,

I knew English people drove on the left side of the road. I knew that English people said “please”and “thank you”a lot and I knew that the money they used was called pounds and pence. It was quite a shock when I bought a newspaper and a bottle of drink at the airport, and the woman behind the counter said, “That’ll be 2 quid, love.” I made a quick calculation (计算) and decided to hand over two ￡1 coins. Imagine my relief when she said “Ta, love”. I didn’t know what that meant either, but at least she was smiling, so I must got the money right.

I soon learned that a “quid” is a pound. There are several explanations for this, but the one I like best is that “quid”comes from “Quidhampton Mill”, which used to produce the special paper that pound notes (纸币) were printed on.

My new English friends often talked about “fivers” and “tenners” but the meaning of these was obvious: a fiver is simply a ￡5 note and a tenner is a ￡10 note. They would also speak about things like computers or cars costing a “grand” or a “couple of grand”. It took me a while, but I finally figured out that a “grand”was a thousand pounds.

Just when I thought I had got used to English money, I saw the following advertisement in a local newspaper: “Wanted: Sales Clerk, London Area, ￡25k”. I was completely confused. I knew from my computer course that “k”meant “kilobyte”.

I didn’t know that it could also mean “thousand” in newspaper advertisements.

A few days later a friend explained the mystery. The advertisement was not for a 25-kilobyte clerk, but for a clerk who would earn ￡25,000 a year.
