Christmas Eve Dinner

I fell in love with the minister’s son Robert the winter I turned fourteen. He was not Chinese. For Christmas I prayed for him. He was a golden-haired boy and had a slim mew American nose.

When I found out that my parents had invited the minister’s family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What would Robert think of our Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners? What terrible disappointments would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey and sweet potatoes but Chinese food?

On Christmas Eve I saw my mother had busied herself in creating a strange menu. The kitchen was untidy with piles of raw food: beef, fish, tofu, vegetables, and so on. The fish with its eyes swelling seemed to plead not to be thrown into the pan of hot oil. The tofu looked like white sponges.

And then they arrived—the minister’s family and all my relatives. The house was soon filled with the loud confusing noise of doorbell, shouting, and talking. I saw Robert, but I pretended he did not exist.

Dinner threw me deeper into despair. My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and

reached across the table, dipping them into the dozen or so plates of food. Robert and his family waited patiently for my father to pass them the large shallow dishes. My relatives murmured with pleasure when my mother brought out the whole steamed fish. There was a strange expression on Robert’s face. Then my father stuck his chopsticks just below the fish eye and picked out the soft meat. “Amy, your favorite,” he said, offering me the tender fish cheek. At that moment I wanted to disappear instantly.

At the end of the meal my father leaned back and stroked his stomach. He complimented my mother on her fine cooking in a loud voice. “It’s a polite Chinese custom to show you are satisfied,” explained my father to our astonished guests. Robert was looking down at his plate. His face was rather red. I was chocked and felt uneasy. For the rest of the night I kept silent.

After everyone had gone, my mother said to me, “ You want to be the same as American girls on the outside.” She handed me an early gift, it was a mini-skirt in light yellow. “But inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame.” And even though I didn’t agree with her then, I knew she understood how much I had suffered during the evening’s dinner. Many years later, I found I was no longer in love with Robert. It was only then that I was able to fully appreciate her lesson.

My son recently does a good job at the public school for his learning disabilities, and I was shocked to realize how excellent he was in many of his subjects. Because he couldn’t give me good written answers to the questions, I hadn’t realized how much he knew. I took away the sixth grade history book he and his sister were using and gave them both high school books, with the expectation that we would move up to college books next year if they did will.

Reading is their strongest subject, but I had not realized they had college reading abilities until they were tested. Both children enjoy history more, and my son likes to carry his history book to the grade school, where he attends part time. When his classmates do their grade school history, he pulls out his high school book and works independently from it. Surprisingly, this has also increased hi ability to fit into his public school class. He was the youngest child in his class, has some disabilities, including speech disorders, and h adn’t been in public school since first grade. He had complained that the public school class he had longed to try was boring, but after I increased his challenges at home, he seemed to adapt better at public school as well, choosing to participate more in the group activities, and making new friends.
