2013年暑假“引智培训”小结My summary Twelve-day’s training will be over soon. And I am very happy to get to know Mr Brown and Ms Maria. They are both rich-experienced teachers. I learnt a lot from them.
First, they are very careful with their work. I believe that they made a very good preparation before they go into their classes. And you will not feel bored in their lessons, because there are so many topics, so many pictures, so many songs, so many games,and so many whatever.
Second, though Ms Maria and Mr Brown are not young,they are still energetic and lovely. They always tried their best to make us be interested in their lessons. I really like the knowledge they brought me. They made me know American culture better. And I really like the songs and tongue twisters they gave me.
And at last I am glad to get a souvenir from Ms Maria. It’s a good idea to be kind to my students.
I want to say “thanks a lot ”to Ms Maria, Mr Brown and also Mr Dragon for the great time during the training.

How to be a good teacher?
My English teacher is Sandra. She is Canadian. She is a kind ,helpful, charming and hardworking teacher. In these days, we discussed happily about students, occupations, hobbies and so on. We asked so many questions and Sandra answered them completely.
A teacher asked: “ How to be a good teacher?”This question impressed me deeply, because all of us hope to be a good teacher.
Sandra said: “ Firstly, a good teacher should be open-minded, so students will come and talk to him/her. Also, she/he needs to keep learning things. The world is changing. A teacher should learn new things in the teaching field. A knowledgeable teacher can teach the students not only knowledge on text books , but also those beyond.
I am in complete agreement on her perspective of what makes a good teacher.
I think a good teacher also needs to be patient and helpful, always ready to be there and listen if there are any questions. He/she shouldn’t spoon-feed his students. He/She should encourage them solve the problems. Besides, a good teacher is not only teach knowledge but also to develop another person’s life. It’s very important for us to cultivate kids’ good learning habits and quality.
I learn a lot in the training course. I really hope I can improve my oral English in these 12 days of training. It’s a good chance for me to learn from foreign teachers and I’ll try my best to do it well.
I’ve found the lost Me back!
Having been away from an English major in the university for only one year, to my great shock, English language is not that familiar to me as before ，expect some certain words and sentences I am teaching now. How I miss the good feeling of being able to speak fluent English and grasp the English news and report without any difficulties! While the truth is that I am still working and living in the school, only in a different place, what’s more, acting as a teacher.
For a period of time, I can’t find my proper position as being a teacher, after all, I’ve worked for only one year. I was wondering what on earth the use of all my English knowledge learnt for these years, for the English language knowledge I am teaching now is just a piece of cake compared with my English knowledge storage. Fortunately, I had a chance to take part in the ‘Intellectual training for English teachers program’ this summer, where I met four Canadian teachers, elegant ladies with nice accent which have been far from me for a while. Besides, Director Xu and Mr Yang , the charges of the program, they can speak good English, too, especially Mr Yang, working as a volunteer at the Red Cross in JiangNing District, English has been away from him for at least several decades, he still tried very hard to express himself with all the English words he can recall in a proper and humorous way. I was deeply moved by that .Well, I felt ashamed of myself , because I just had the thought to stop using all the English language for there were no many chances to use them. But now I decided to pick up my English and tried to find ME back, the one who had the every confidence to show her English, and the one who were eager to learn as much as possible.
It was Sandra Tan who gave me the opportunity to find the ‘ME’back, Sandra is an accessible, humorous and kind lady, very much Chinese like, she told us her parents are Chinese and her grandparents were born in Guangzhou , China. It’s no wonder that she looks like most of us Chinese people. She lived in Toronto, a multicultural city with the most population in Canada, and the condominium where she lived embraced the good overview of the Toronto University. She has a son, Brook, which means a stream, a little river, he is 13 years old, very cute and respectable. As a teenager of his age, leaving no such headaches as having problems in study or playing against the will of parents or being involved in computer games, he just does what he likes, and he is willing to make progress in his interested things with the help of his parents. Sandra is happy to talk about her son, she showed us some pictures of Brook. She is proud of her son, I think. Sandra enjoys her life very much, without a car, she likes to ride a bicycle, as a painter ,she draws many beautiful sceneries while traveling. What they say is that a good painter must be a great traveler. Sandra has been to many countries, such as South Africa, Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Cuba. I like
traveling too, you can experience different ways of live in multi cultures which can enrich your life experience. I start to think about my next traveling. Canada sounds great, maybe I can visit Sandra somedays in Toronto.
Sandra played a game with us, anyone who caught the red ball thrown from someone else in the classroom asked Sandra a question. luckily, I was the first to ask her a question. According to her, she has been a teacher for seven years, she has taught in an elementary school, which was kind of different from what we know primary school here in China, as well as adult literacy, I asked which one was easier to teach, I had thought she would tell me teaching the adult would be easier for they were grownups already, which means it would be much easier to discipline themselves in class. But Sandra told me it was hard to answer. As for the children, some of them are annoying, naughty, and some children may had some certain problems. As for the adult, she didn’t just teach them how to read or write, she even helped those with addiction to drugs, alcohol, and abuse. She counseled to help the adults, they needed her help, and the oldest student she taught was more than eighty years old. Sandra told me that the grandma even had difficulty in recalling her own address, Sandra had to help write down the grandma’s address ,and put it in the purse, in case that she couldn’t find her way home. What a helpful woman Sandra is! Sandra were happy to answer all the questions we raised, including how to deal with the children who had learning issues , how to raise a good child as Sandra’s son, how to handle the problem of the students who didn’t obey the classroom disciplines and so on. In the afternoon, we had the chance to get to know each other in the form of making our own name cards and the exchanged them with the guidance of Sandra. We singed happily, too.
The first day training was happy, I had the chance to know more colleagues in our district; they are all very hard working and kind. I am beginning to call back my feeling of expressing myself using English. The next several days include some tasks which need our cooperation to finish, such us introducing the symbols, flag, famous places in our country to Sandra, while independent thinking is also needed just to speak out whatever come to our mind concerning a topic. We got a lot about Canada from Sandra, too, such as the symbols, the flag, the Mountie, the Canadian family and so on. We had an opportunity to experience the exotic scenery in Canada. Besides, we learnt some interesting idioms and useful teaching strategies.
What’s the most important thing is that I found the lost ME back! Without wandering about with no direction. I know that being a teacher is very demanding, you have to be highly qualified, you have to broaden your horizons to enrich your life experience, for a person with broad horizon must embrace broad mindedness and can help the students to learn more about life, I should teach
them more than required English language knowledge, but also how to discipline themselves, the way to think properly, and how to be the one they want to become, From now on, I must try every effort to help my students realize their dreams. I am looking forward to learning more from the progressing program.

It is not easy for me to write in English. This kind of training class is the second time for me. I remembered that the first time I came to take part in the training class is in the year of 2007. It was also a very hot July, and I also have a teacher from Canada, who is a principal of a primary school.
I’ve been an English teacher for about 13 years already, and I’d like to make my students to learn English happily. So I support to use games in English teaching. Pupils are always very excited about this, especially in low grades. Today Miss Sandra showed us some good games that I can use in my class. The “red ball” is a very good one. It can make everyone to talk, and it’s very useful for a new teacher to a new class. It’s a good way to warm up. I also like the game “I’m lovely Linda. She’s…” It can help students to practice the new adjective words, include the meaning and the pronunciation. And this game can also practice our memory. The one who can repeat all the names and the adjectives correctly will be very encouraged and confident. That’s good for learning.

To be honest, when I was informed to have to take part in the training for such a long time, I felt so upset, because of the housing problem. I don’t have a place to stay, and for some reason I can’t stay in the dormitory in my school. So I was really reluctant to take this training class. However, I eventually took it. Then I just realized that I would be so regretful if I didn’t take it.
I still remember the first day of this training program. A simple but warm welcome ceremony was hold to welcome these foreign teachers. They are four lovely, friendly and energetic Canadian ladies. The teacher of my class is Christine. She is really nice. She gave us a brief introduction of herself. Then let us ask some questions about her. It could be any questions without any limitations. From those questions, we know that she really loves her daughter. She couldn’t live without her daughter. And she was divorced twice and has been single for a long time. She thinks it’s good and comfortable to stay unmarried. I think that is different in China. If you are divorced, people kind of think that’s your fault if even you did nothing wrong. What’s worse, if you decide to raise your child alone, people might think that you lost your mind. It’s uncommon to stay unmarried if you have a child. But it seems to be common in Canada. In the rest
of the day, we got to know each other by some games an activity. Christine is really good at organizing activities and breaking the ice for us. We talked a lot and felt no pins in the needle any more.
On the second day, our topic is about symbols. Christine showed us a lot of Canadian symbols, such as inukshuk, CN tower, moose, Canadian currency etc. we learnt a lot. And a book of ABC for Canada was presented to us. It’s really an amazing book showing us an amazing country. Canada is so different from China. We got different culture, different animals, different sceneries and so on. We then worked as groups to make our own book of ABC for China. We worked hard just to find that we are so good and creative. When we were making those Chinese symbols, we felt so proud of our culture. We know that nowadays, we Chinese absorb a lot of western culture, but still we keep our own culture, even when we are abroad, we try to keep our own identity. At the end of the day, she gave each of us a Canadian cent and a pin of Canadian flag. We felt so happy and honored.
On the third, that’s today, we were asked to bring a photo of the most important people in our life, could be our parents, our sisters or brothers, our friends. I brought a photo of my elder sister. I talked a lot about my sister, and told my classmates a funny story about her. I think my sister really loves me, cares about me. And I do love her. Later on, Christine showed us movie about Canada. It is about every unique things in Canada, whether in sports, animals, sceneries, food, culture. We asked questions about that movie. And then we discussed about 4 particular customs in China, which are culture about marriage, giving child, university, and funeral. Everybody in the group expressed their ideas about those topics. I was so happy to find that I regain my confidence and the sense of speaking English. I felt so comfortable talking with foreigners. And I really learnt a lot from this training program. As the saying goes: “Practice makes perfect.” I truly believe through this training, my competence of English, whether of listening, speaking, reading, writing, or even teaching will be improved and enhanced to a higher level. I’m looking forward to the day that I break the cocoon and become a butterfly! (土桥小学桂婷婷)
An Interesting Training
This time I’m lucky to take part in the English training. It will last for ten days. It will help us to improve our oral English. Through three days of learning. I feel I have learned a lot.
Our English teacher is Cristie. She is from Canada. She is kind and the smiles are always on her face. She gives everyone the chance to talk. If you feel nervous she will smile and look at you and encourage you. In her class, you feel relax and funny.
Of course, the original English let us excited, we can't go out to enjoy the local customs and practices in canada. A Maple syrup sweet in mouth; Penny, Quarter, Toonie, Loonie these Canadian currency becomes familiar; Ice hockey is the most popular sport. When she introduces the symbols of Canada, she is full of pride and enthusiasm. We read the A to Z in Canada and make the A to Z in China by group working. And we talked about the examinations, the food in China and in Canada. We talked, played games and tasted food. We talked and played just like friends. We all like her very much. And in the next few days, I will try my best to learn from her. (Daisy 刘悦)
I feel very honored to have this chance to participate the training called “Yinzhi” this summer holiday. Our teacher is Sandra Tan, who is from Canada. She is very kind and she always wears a smile on her face. We all like her. Today is the third day of the training. During the last three days, we learned a lot from her.
In her course, we were encouraged to communicate with each other in English. At first, we dare not speak English in front of her, because of our poor “Chinglish”. And we felt embarrassed to make mistakes. But every time we made mistakes, Sandra would correct them for us and she would say that “Mistake is good. Mistake is learning”. We were encouraged to speak more and more. I think it does help to improve our speaking ability. As the saying goes “Practice makes perfect”. Now we could speak English more fluently with each other.
As primary English teachers, we also learned many teaching strategies. We were taught some interesting games and some character actings which could be used in our own class.
I think I was lucky to have this training which was really helpful. And I learned a lot in a happy atmosphere. (高文)
It has been three days since I come to this class. I feel so lucky that I could take part in this project. During this training, I make many new friends and learn a lot from our teacher. It is really interesting and meaningful!
Compared to the spoken lessons I’ve taken in my college, this training makes me more relax. The atmosphere is very harmonious and all the students are easy-going. At first, most of us are a little shy for we don’t know each other, but as time goes on, after some activities and funny games, all of us dare to say something out without the fear of making mistakes. In the process of activities and funny games, we’ve learned how to cooperate with others, which in turn makes us realize the importance of cooperation. Above all, it is known to us that
two heads are better than one. And I think all of these could also be put into our teaching so that our students can learn the importance of cooperation and how to get along with others.
Our teacher, Cristin, is a 53 years old teacher who comes from Canada. She is a very kind woman and keeps smiling all the time. If we come across new words or fail to catch her words, she will always patiently explain them in a simple way or use actions and facial expressions to let her understood. That’s really fun! From her introduction to teachers’ life in Canada, we know that all they have to do is not just to teach students English, but also subjects like math, computer, science, biology, ect. In a word, if you want to be a teacher in Canada, you must try to be versatile. Apart from this, a teacher in Canada has to take care of their students, especially those who do not have a happy family; giving them love and making them believe that the world is still a nice place. How lucky we are, all we have to do is to teach my students English. It is necessary for us to learn their attitude towards teaching, without complaining so much.
This project is really meaningful and I really learn a lot from it. I will try my best to make a full use of this chance so that my English could improve indeed.
English training project
I’m very happy to take part in this project. This English training will hold for two weeks . In this classroom , there are about 28 teachers from different primary schools . For these days , we are not teachers and we become students , because there is a foreign teacher who is from Canada .She is Christine. Although we can not understand every words of her , we students can work together to help each other .
Christine is very lovely and we all like her . In this classroom , she teaches us many skills about teaching , such as how to make students think, how to use games and some skills in reading . I gain a lot from this training .Our teacher always keep us comfortable and never make us embarrassed although our English is not so good . So it gives me more motive to learn English . We are teachers and we should make a good example for our students . it’s never too old to learn .

Through today's study, I understand the true meaning of the word "encourage" . Today Miss Maria has been encouraging us to speak Enlgish.She used many forms, some seemingly very common topic to organize her course.It is obviously that she is an experienced teacher.
And also Maria always listened attentively to each one of us speak English, I
know this is a bit difficult for her. Relative to Maria,we are"foreigners". Those of us foreigners who speak English is not very authentic.
In short, today I learned a lot。

Today we discussed3 topics, one is "what is a good life", one is" travel agency" and another is" Education in American."During the lesson, we thought a lot, but also talked a lot. Especially the first topic, most students agreed that" good health" is the most important elements of “a good life”. I think "a good life" should be a" good health" and" well-paid" job.
In the afternoon, we were divided into teams. W made up dialogues around"Travel agency" . With the help of Maria, the dialogue is successful, In all, we learned a lot , thanks.

“As a teacher, we should teach our students with love” says Maria. Her words impressed me most today.
During today’s course. I made a news report. (not bad) then we had a discussion on “Education issues in our classrooms.” Maria listened to us carefully and she told us her own teaching stories. Around “1. Homework 2. Follow instructions 3. Dicipline 4. Improve Reading abilities e g. Long articles. 5. Students do not want to study English—how to interest them 6. Retaining information”. From her own teaching stories. I really understand the true meaning of “love in teaching” . also I learnt some facts about Maria’s school. (something different from us ,e g. Sex education in her school.)

Today we have discussions in the form of groups. Discuss around different topics, First of all, we heard the three student make the news report. Maria listened carefully as well, and she made her point of view from time to time. obviously, she is a very serious teacher. Under her influence, every student actively discuss.
Maria has provided us with many pictures. She asks each of us to make a picture description. Her teaching method is simple and effective.
I think the next term I will give her this way to use it in my teaching.
