The centenary(百年)of the birth of William Faulkner, one of the great modern novelists, was celebrated in September 1997. Faulkner wrote about the southern states of the United States of America where he grew up, and where his family had an important part to play in the history of that region. His work became a touchstone for insights into the troubled issues of southern American identity, race relations, and the family interrelationships of the old time southern gentry(贵族).

Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi on September 25, 1897. Despite his interest in writing, he left Oxford High School, Mississippi, without graduating. After World War I, he entered the University of Mississippi as a special student, a right to study which was granted to retired soldiers, although Faulkner had only finished training with the Air Force in Canada, and not entered combat(战斗).

Faulkner began to write poems, a verse play, short stories and finished his first novel Sartoris in 1928. His fiction was centered for 14 of the 19 novels published during his lifetime in a fictional region called Yoknapatawpha County. The name is said to come from the Indian Chickasaw word meaning split land.

In December 1950, Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. When he accepted it in Stockholm, his speech emphasized that he wished to continue writing, but in a positive way that affirmed the power of humanity to prevail over adverse circumstances. As he said in his speech, he still felt that, despite the threat of nuclear war then hanging over the world, the central concern of the writer should be ―the problems of the human he art in conflict with itself‖. He wanted the tensions and problems that he had cast the spotlight on in the southern states of America to be resolved by the life-affirming attitudes and action of his characters. Like playwright Tennessee Williams, Faulkner was a major voice who spoke for the troubled heart of the southern states of America. His achievement is all the more remarkable because, as a schoolboy, he was not only a frequent absentee but also reportedly failed to reach pass grades in English class. His collected short stories, novels, poems, and other writings form a legacy(遗产) of literature which casts profound illumination(启发) on the special culture of the South, a culture which developed from a history and social circumstances that were always unique.

From the focus on a fictional county, and by remaining true to his view of a close-knit but real society that reflected the greater world around him, Faulkner in the end fashioned a legend of the Deep South that is one of the major achievements of the 20th century literature.

D

About this time every year, I get very nostalgic(怀旧的). Walking through my neighborhood on a fall afternoon reminds me of a time not too long ago when sounds of children filled the air, children playing games on a hill, and throwing leaves around in the street below. I was one of those children, carefree and happy. I live on a street that is only one block long. I have lived on the same street for sixteen years. I love my street. One side has six houses on it, and the other has only two houses, with a small hill in the middle and a huge cottonwood tree on one end. When I think of home, I think of my street. Only I see it as it was before. Unfortunately things change. One day, not long ago, I looked around and saw how different everything has become. Life on my street will never be the same because neighbors are quickly grown old, friends are growing up and leaving, and the city is planning to destroy my precious hill and sell the property to contractors.

It is hard for me to accept that many of my wonderful neighbors are growing old and won’t be around much longer. I have fond memories of the couple across the street, who sat together on their porch swing almost every evening, the widow next door who yelled at my brother and me for being too loud, and the crazy old man in a black suit who drove an old car. In contrast to those people, the people I see today are very old neighbors who have seen better days. The man in the black suit says he wants to die, and another neighbor just sold his house and moved into a nursing home. The lady who used to yell at us is too tired to bother any more, and the couple across the street rarely go out to their front porch these days. It is difficult to watch these precious people as they near the end of their lives because at once I thought they would live forever.

The ―comings and goings‖ of the younger generation of my street are now mostly ―goings‖ as friends and peers move on. Once upon a time, my life and the lives of my peers revolved around home. The boundary of our world was the gutter at the end of the street. We got pleasure from playing night games or from a breathtaking ride on a tricycle. Things are different now, as my friends become adults and move on. Children who rode tricycles now drive cars. The kids who once played with me now have new interests and values as they go their separate ways. Some have gone away to college like me, a few got married, two went into the army, and one went to prison. Watching all these people grow up and go away makes me long for the good old days.

Perhaps the biggest change on my street is the fact that the city is going to turn my precious hill into several lots for now homes. For sixteen years, the view out of my kitchen window has been a view of that hill. The hill was a fundamental part of my childhood life; it was the hub of social activity for the children of my street. We spent hours there building forts, sledding, and playing tag. The view out of my kitchen window now is very different; it is one of tractors and dump trucks tearing up the hill. When the hill goes, the neighborhood will not be the same. It is a piece of my childhood. It is a visual reminder of being a kid. Without the hill, my street will be just another pea in the pod.

There was a time when my street was my world, and I thought my world would never change. But something happened. People grow up, and people grow old. Places changes, and with the change comes the heartache of knowing I can never go back to the times I loved. In a year or so, I will be gone just like many of my neighbors. I will always look back to my years as a child, but the place I remember will not be the silent street whose peace is interrupted by the sounds of construction. It will be the happy, noisy, somewhat strange, but wonderful street I knew as a child.

67. The writer finds it hard to accept the fact that _____________.

A. many of his good neighbors are growing old

B. the lady next door who used to yell at him and his brother is now a widow

C. the life of his neighbors has become very boring

D. the man in his black suit even wanted to end his own life

A. removing the hill to make way for residential development

B. the building of new homes behind his kitchen window

C. the fact that there are much fewer people around than in the past

D. the change in his childhood friends' attitude towards their neighborhood

69. What does the writer mean by saying ―my street will be another pea in the pod‖?

A. his street will be very noisy and dirty

B. his street will soon be crowded with people

C. his street will have some new attractions

D. his street will be no different from any other street

70. Which could be a good title for the passage?

A. The Past of My Street will Live Forever

B. Unforgettable People and Things of My Street

C. Memory Street Isn’t What It Used to Be

D. The Big Changes of My Street

Disability aids are vital to those who suffer problems with executing work with two hands. These are people who have been disabled due to some major sickness or some other problems. In order to help them carry on their work in the normal way, disability aids are manufactured. This helps them make their life a lot easier than what it would have been without these aids. The kind of disability aids that an individual might require depends on the person only. It is the problem that a person faces that decides the aids that he/she will use for carrying out their respective jobs. The following is the list of a few disability aids that come of significant use.

The first and foremost aid is the stocking aid, aiding the individuals suffering from the problem of bending down to reach the foot and wear their own socks. These stocking aids have a gutter(槽) that is made up of plastic material. These gutters are shaped in a certain way along with the attachment of cotton tapes in it. The sock is then put over the gutter. The foot is placed inside the gutter. The cotton tapes help in pulling the socks up the leg and subsequently the sock. In this manner, the sock is worn by a person who has problems wearing it by bending one’s back and reaching the foot.

There are openers that help the people who have problems with their hands or wrists to open bottles of ketchup, jam and other such bottles and jars that necessitates the use of hands and fingers.

The third type of disability aids that comes to our minds are lifts. Now what are lifts? Lifts are certain machines that help in lifting people from specific areas, such as a bathtub or a set of stairs. These lifts are of varied types and come for numerous applications. It is for the individual to decide the type that he/she requires to use.

For people, who have problems in balancing their upper bodies in a stable manner, there is something known as grab rails(扶手). These grab rails are installed for those who have mobility problems in their upper bodies. These rails come in varieties of shapes, sizes and angles. These grab rails are available to home users as well, in their different variations. One can purchase and fix one to their homes according to one’s specificities. These grab rails require the act of screwing and drilling in order to fix them to their appropriate place. The prices of these rails also vary according to the variation of their shapes and sizes.

A portable book holder is a much sought-after disability aid. It can be used by anybody for that matter, not just the disabled. These portable book holders are light-weight and can be easily moved about. These holders relieve the strains on one’s hands, necks and shoulders that might occur due to the handling of a book. The holders are provided with extended legs that help in placing the reading material at suitable distance.

Thus with the help of these disability aids, the old and disabled people can make their lives much more

One Possible Version:

Recently ,the air quality in China has raised widespread concern. As is indicated in the picture, an old man and his grandson are taking a walk in the street with masks covering their mouths. As the haze is becoming heavier and heavier, they find it hard to see the buildings and trees around them clearly.

The picture conveyed here is that air pollution is quite severe in China. Many factors account for this phenomenon. In the first place, vehicles sending large quantities of poisonous gases are a major source of air pollution. Furthermore, factories that release a great deal of smoke are also responsible for the poor air quality. Besides, burning materials like coal or oil for homes and offices is another major contributor to air pollution.

Personally, to better the air quality, the government and the common citizens should make joint efforts. Riding and walking are wise options for public travels. Meanwhile, effective laws are supposed to be made to guarantee good air quality.

M: I think I'll have ice cream for dessert. What would you like to have?

W: The chocolate cake looks delicious to me. But I want to lose weight.

Text 2

W: Do you have any plans for this weekend, John?

M: I'm actually supposed to go out of town with my parents. It's my dad's birthday, and they invited my sister and I to go skiing with them.

W: Oh, that sounds nice! I was going to ask you if you wanted to go to the movies with me.

M: How about next weekend?

Text 3

M: Josie, would you mind helping me paint my bedroom tomorrow? My brother was going to help me, but he broke his arm yesterday. I will make you lunch... what do you say?

W: Of course I will help you, Oliver. I am sorry to hear about your brother's arm. I hope he feels better soon.

Text 4

M: How do you figure out the fare?

W: Well, the first five kilometers are $5, and every extra kilometer costs you $3.

Text 5

W: Do you have any experience doing this kind of work, Mr. Jacobs?

M: I'm afraid I don't, madam, but I've always been interested in this type of work. And I have a lot of other experience, as you can see from my résumé.

Text 6

M: Hello, madam. What can I do for you?

W: My feet hurt. I think I need some new shoes.

M: What size do you wear?

W: The last time I bought new shoes was about a year ago, and at that time, I was a 7.

M: Well, once you get to be in your twenties, your feet stop growing, so you are probably still a 7. But let's measure them just in case.

W: OK… so, what does it say?

M: Well, it looks like you're an 8. No wonder your feet have been hurting you. You've been wearing shoes that are one size too small!

Text 7

W: Whew! Thanks for stopping. Sometimes it can be impossible to get a cab in the rain.

M: No worries. Where to?

W: I'm going to Fifth Avenue and East 22nd Street. No rush at all, though.

M: Well, that's good because it looks like we're not going to be able to move more than a few feet per minute!

W: Well, that's what happens when it starts to rain during rush hour. I'm one of the lucky ones. Usually, I would have an appointment around this time, but today I get to go home early!

M: That's great, madam. I'll try to get you home as early as possible.

Text 8

W: OK, that's a cut! Let's take it from the top, everyone.

M: What was the problem that time?

W: The feeling was all wrong, Mike. She is telling you that she doesn't want to see you anymore, but I want to get more anger from you. You're acting hurt and sad, but that's not how your character would act in this situation.

M: But Jason and Laura have been together for three years. Don't you think his reaction would be one of both anger and sadness?

W: At this point, no. I think he would react the way most guys would, and then later on, we would see his real

M: I'm not so sure about that.

W: Let's try it my way, and you can see how you feel when you're saying your lines. After that, if it still doesn't feel right, we can go back to the drawing board.

Text 9

W: Hey, welcome to Berlin! It's great to see you again.

M: Yeah, good to see you too! Have you been waiting here at the station long?

W: Only fifteen minutes. But let's get out of this cold and go to my apartment! How are you feeling after that long bus ride?

M: Ah, it wasn't too bad. It was only nineteen hours.

W: That's crazy! You could've flown here from London for 60 euros, and it would only have taken an hour and a half. Was it really worth all that time, just to save a bit of money?

M: Well, it was a pretty uncomfortable ride, to be honest. The bus was starting to smell toward the end of it, and there was a guy next to me who was breathing really loudly while he was sleeping. But the reason I took the bus was because it's more environmentally friendly than flying.

W: I think it's great you want to help the environment. But you look so exhausted right now. I just think you should be a little more careful with your health.

M: Well, I wasn't expecting the bus to be so unpleasant. But you're right. Next time I visit you, I'll probably fly.

Text 10

Welcome back to Modern Parenting. We've already talked about being open and honest with your kids, but there is one thing that all good parents do, and it's surprisingly simple: read to your kids. Studies show that children are better prepared for school and tend to get better grades later on if their pa rents make a habit of reading to them from a young age. One study from Harvard University found that the number of books in the home was the single biggest factor related to success in school, more than the education or income of the parents! Reading is fun, and it can be an important part of relaxing at bedtime. Best of all, it gives parents an opportunity to communicate with their children and teach them about the world. It's never too early to start reading to your children. Many parents buy books for their kids long before they can talk, and so me even start reading to their children before they are born! Trips to the library or the bookstore can be fun activities for young families to do together. So parents, if you're wondering what to do with your kids tonight, remember: all you need is a good book! That's all for Modern Parenting. This is Lesley, on 105.7 FM, saying good night.

Here are the garden products to avoid: Cocoa mulch Some gardeners like to use cocoa shell mulch in their gardens but, just like chocolate, cocoa shell mulch contains theobromine (可可碱), which is poisonous to dogs. This means that cocoa shell mulch can be potentially deadly if consumed in large quantities. If you own a dog I’d strongly advise that you avoid using Cocoa mulch in your garden. Compost Despite being an eco-friendly garden feature, compost can be highly dangerous for animal. As organic matter decomposes, it releases mycotoxins (霉菌素), which are poisonous to wildlife. Consumption of mycotoxins can cause panting, vomiting (呕吐), seizures and even death in dogs. If you do use compost in your garden, make sure it is securely fenced off so that your pet cannot access it. Weed killer The chemicals contained in weed killers can be irritants to animals and, in some cases, even poisonous. Some weed killers contain harmful substances, such as borax and arsenic, which can potentially be fatal to pets. If you are unsure whether a weed killer is safe to use in a garden that your pet uses, you should always seek the manufacturer’s advice first, or ask a vet (兽医).
