I’ve loved my mother’s desk since I was just tall enough to sit above the top of it as mother sat writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be a most wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she said again, “it’s for Elizabeth.”

I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted to have heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter.

They never happened. And the gulf is opened between us. I was “too emotional”. But she lived “on the surface(表面)”.

As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me.

I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came.

My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace —it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had ever been sent to my mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I couldn’t stop trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told me, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside — a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded (折叠)and refolded many times. It was my letter.

Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words.

21. What did mother do with her daughter’s letter asking for forgiveness?

A. She had never received the letter.

B. For years, she often talked about the letter.

C. She read the letter again and again till she died.

D. She didn’t forgive her daughter at all in all her life.

22. It can be inferred from this passage that .

A. Mother wrote her daughter in careful words

B. Mother cared much about her daughter in word

C. Mother was too serious about everything her daughter had done

D. Mother was cold on the surface but kind in her heart to her daughter

23. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. My Letter to Mother

B. Mother and Children

C. My mother’s Desk

D. Talks between Mother and Me

B

Where have all the bicycles gone? Getting that first two-wheeler used to be one of childhood’s most exciting moments. It meant an expansion of the child’s world. The opportunity to travel beyond one’s street and meet friends at the playground, ball field, or just go to someone’s house on your own was an exciting new stage of independence. It also meant lots of exercise.

But bicycle sales are decreasing. Now, less than half of the children aged 7-11 regularly ride a bike. This is a serious change in the culture of our children’s lives.

But it is not just the crazy schedule of parents or the increased temptation of “screens”—— TV, video games, computers——to play with. Another factor is playing a bigger role in the narrowing world of children. Surveys indicate parents fear that if they allow their children to roam(闲逛)freely about the town, those children may be abducted(诱拐)by strangers. School playgrounds are no longer safe places to hang out. The woods are no longer a great place to explore.

Parents couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, there are only 100-130 stranger abductions a year in the U.S. Besides, 75% of all abductions are carried out by people the child knows, most of which are done by divorced parents who are upset about custody(监护)arrangements. You and your child are three times more likely to be hit by lightning at a soccer game than your child is likely to experience a stranger abduction!

Children running free are very safe. Not only safe, but these children are learning to make creative use of their time, being physically active, and improving their social skills. Now what more could you ask for?

Don’t just shake your head and smile, as many parents do today, when your child tend to use instant messaging to talk to her friend next door. Turn off the computer and send her next door! Consider it a pleasure to yell down the street or call a friend to find your child at dinnertime. Let’s make bicycles something special for children once again.

24. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 1?

A. The benefits of riding bicycle

B. Different forms of exercise

C. The causes of the disappearance of bicycles

D. Exciting moments in childhood

25. Children hardly ride bicycle today mainly because .

A. there are few safe places for them to ride

B. they are encouraged to walk for health

C. they prefer to spend time in front of screens

D. their parents are worried about their safety

26. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 is intended to .

A. tell readers bad weather is a great danger to children

B. suggest an unhappy marriage does great harm to children

C. explain there is little chance of a child’s being abducted

D. warn children of the danger of watching football games

My car was totaled in an April accident, leading my wife and me to be car-free. We rented a car for a few weeks, thinking that after our summer travels we’d buy a new car. Our attention focused on hybrids, electrics and other environmentally friendly choices, but slowly we came to realize that there was another choice.

We decided that we would try the car-free lifestyle. September without a car was pretty easy, with good weather encouraging us to walk or bike. Metro (subway) was just fine for getting to the District, and it freed us from thinking about where to park. Sometimes after a meeting in the District, we’d take Metro to College Park. Destinations(目的地)that were two to three miles from home became walkable, and we proudly hit our daily 10,000-step goals on our iPhone apps. Destinations that were four to six miles away became biking events.

The J4 Metro bus took us from the Bethesda Metro station to the University of Maryland. It was a 50-minute ride instead of a 25-to-30-minute drive, but we could chat, email or read. On the bus, we talked with a number of different people. As October and November came and went, we felt better and better about the car-free life.

Still, we weren’t totally car-free. Uber and a taxi became important parts of our lives, getting us to more faraway destinations.

Our choices of destinations also changed. We shopped within walking distance, and we ordered items online rather than driving to a mall. We favored friendships with neighbors and those who were willing to meet us at home for dinner. Sometimes we would ask our friends for a ride to the same party or poker game.

Being car-free meant we don’t need to listen to the mor ning traffic reports and changing gas prices. Even with the Uber, taxi and Zipcar bills, we saved money compared with owning a car. No more car insurance bills, parking lot charges or campus parking fees.

We were surprised with how much there was to learn to go car-free: different services, iPhone apps and Uber rules. We’re proud of what we have done, and talking about it brings about conversations about other environmentally friendly solutions and encourages other people to find possible solutions that work for them.

27. The underlined word “totaled” in Paragraph 1 probably means.

A. destroyed

B. swapped

C. checked

D. trapped

28. The car-free style has brought the writer changes except that he has .

A. been used to living a car-free life

B. reduced the cost of transportation

D. begun to have more communication with people around

29. In Paragraph 5, the writer talks about the change of his destinations mainly by .

A. telling stories

B. giving examples

C. listing reasons

D. making comparisons

30. This passage is mainly about .

A. how the writer survived from a car accident

B. how the writer learned to love a car-free life

C. what places the writer went to for social activities

A Thankful Life

At many Thanksgiving dinners, everyone around the table shares something they are thankful for. Most of us can do this easily. But how can we be thankful all the time? 31

●Focus on the positive and accept the negative(消极). No matter what happens, it’s best to remember the good things. When you’re around others, try to say what you like about them. By keeping good in mind, you’ll give thanks for it all the more. At the same time, you can’t ignore bad things that have happened. 32 Before you know it, you are thankful for negative things, too.

●33 Thankful people know that it’s much better to give than to receive. When you’re thankful, you have the desire to offer acts of kindness. Some volunteers help people in need on a regular basis. It’s a way of showing love, but there are also great rewards for such experiences. 34

●Make use of quality time. Quality time is also a great way to show thanks. By spending time with others, you show them how much they mean to you. Being thankful is also better realized by spending time alone. 35 You can list them out or pray to thank God for them. Find your way to make thanksgiving a part of who you are every day.

A. Offer acts of kindness.

B. Take part in various activities.

C. Here are some tips for you to follow.

D. What should we do on thanks giving day?

E. You usually learn from bad things and become stronger.

F. Studies show that volunteers are likely to feel more happiness.

G. When you’re by yourself, you can think through the best parts of your day.

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

My Dad’s Best Flower

I remember my first home was a small apartment on the second floor with a lovely and spacious balcony(阳台). When my mom was busy in the kitchen she let me stay on the balcony watching the kids playing in the street. On that balcony I played sometimes with my elder sister, Maria. She was seven years old and when my mom was absent she was like a mother to me. The balcony was a great hobby place for my father. After his work he used to grow carnations(康乃馨)in flower boxes. His carnations were red, pink and white, and everyone appreciated them for their beauty.

He took care of them with so much love and devotion. He dealt carefully with his flowers like a mother taking care of her baby. Many times I sat on the floor of the balcony for hours observing him and his lovely flowers with patience. He was always doing something on that balcony. He was watering them every day, cleaning the balcony floor, changing the potting soil and when the stems (茎)were thick, strong and high enough, he started his improvement operation like a doctor.

My dad took a tiny knife and with his left hand he held the stem of the carnation and measured the height. Then he made a small mark on the stem with his finger. Afterwards he made a sharp cut with the knife, just enough to fit in a grain of barley(插穗的芽). Then he bandaged the stem with a small bandage (绷带). His job was then to water the plants and to take care of them. “No one should touch them”, he said to mom. Every day, when he came home from work he went straight to the balcony.

Mom used to tell u s: “Do not touch daddy’s flowers.” For us it was a fascinating experience to watch how the small stems were growing and making flowers. When the carnations had grown big enough, my dad enjoyed watching them every day. We the kids did too.

七、读后续写:

One possible version:

Paragraph 1:

One day, my elder sister, who loved dad very much, had a great idea. She made a short cut of the carnations from their stems one by one and arranged them on the floor. She believed that dad would be pleased to see them that way. When mom realized what my sister had done, she became completely speechless. However, my sister didn’t know why no one appreciated her efforts. The shock was too strong and we all waited for dad’s arrival with anxiety.

Paragraph 2:

When my dad arrived, he went as usual, straight to the balcony and saw his flowers lying on the floor like dead animals. He was shocked at first. He looked toward the street to see if any neighborhood children had done it. Then he entered the living room and looked left and right and mom in silence. Finally mom looked at dad and with a nice tone she said: “No outsider did this great job, only your lovely daughter Maria .” Hearing this, my dad’s face changed from tense to a smile and then he said: “Do I have a better flower than my lovely daughter?” My elder sister smiled and hugged dad strongly.

Another possible version:

Paragraph 1:

One day, my elder sister, who loved dad very much, had a great idea. She thought it was too tiring for dad to take care of the delicate flowers, so she wanted to buy a bunch of artificial carnations to be appreciated, which could save Dad so much hard work. I agreed with her. We took action as soon as Mom

and Dad went out for work. First, Maria went with me to the nearest grocer on our street to obtain the false flowers. Then we went back to the balcony, where we pulled the original carnations out of the flowerpot and arranged the false ones beautifully. Everything finished, we were expecting Dad’s praise.

Paragraph 2:

When my dad arrived, he went as usual, straight to the balcony and saw his flowers lying on the floor like dead animals.Unexpectedly, Dad was mad about it, yelling at us, “Don’t you know touching is not allowed? What on earth have you done?” We fled to our room with tears. Before long, Dad calmed down and talked with us patiently. We explained the reason which moved him greatly. Since then we have always planted carnations together, which enables us to understand each other better and is the fascinating time we treasure most.

Attention, students. Please make sure you are in the right area. This class meeting is for new students who want to sign up for classes. For those who are absent today, they can choose their classes using the school’s website. I can see that there are not quite enough chairs for everyone in here, so I’ll try to speak loudly so that you can all hear me. A few classes have just filled up: Business 110, Physics 3, and Math4. If you want to take one of those classes, you’ll have to wait until next term. All other classes are still open at this time, and we have saved several places especially for new students. 大一期末考试英语试题

01 Passage 1 Hypnotism (催眠术) is very old. Thousands of years ago people started to use it in Egypt. The use of hypnotism has grown very much since that time. Today, doctors and scientists are in almost every country hypnotize people to help them with their problems. What is hypnotism, and how does it work? Many people think that a hypnotist puts people to sleep. Then he makes the hypnotized people do strange things. This is not what a hypnotist does. Hypnotism is really just a way to relax the mind and body. What are some of the uses of hypnotism? We go to a hypnotist because w e have a problem. The problem makes us unhappy. The hypnotist asks us to think hard about something and relax. When we are relaxed, t he hypnotist gives us some ideas to help us with our problems. Hypnotism can help people to remember things. The police sometimes ask hypnotists to help them. For example, a man sees an accident. He forgets the license number of the car he sees. If he is hypnotized he may remember it. The police can then find the car and catch the driver. People who are hypnotized can also make mistakes or say something that isn't true. People remember what they think they saw. That may not be what really happened. The police don't hypnotize people who do something wrong. Why not? People who are hypnotized may say something that isn't true. A person who has done something bad has a good reason to say something that isn't true. 1. Hypnotist helps people by ____. [A] putting them to sleep [B] helping them to get relaxed [C] offering his ideas about their problems [D] making them forget their problems 2. When hypnotized, some people may say something that is not true, because ____. [A] they do not remember what has happened [B] they remember what they think has happened [C] they do not know what has happened [D] they are not interested in what has happened 3. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?____ [A] Hypnotism is very different form what it used to be. [B] When a person is hypnotized, his body gets relaxed, while his mind works hard. [C] Hypnotism is much more widely used today than it was thousands of years ago. [D] When hypnotized, a person will do something strange. 4. The passage mainly talks about ____. [A] how hypnotism works [B] the development of hypnotism [C] the use of hypnotism [D] the wonder of hypnotism
