21.(6分)There are thousands of film and music festivals in and out of Austin, but there is nothing like ATX. Our focus is on the celebration of the medium: looking back at its history, where it is now, and where it is headed. Our weekend consists of screenings and events where participants can hear from actors, writers, directors, involved in all stages of bringing their favourite series to the small screen.
We have the function of a traditional film festival with screenings followed by Q&As from creators; and a series of events including parties, social media events, and “super secret happy hours”. U nlike
traditional festivals, however, we celebrate the history of the medium as well as the future. Since we arrange 50% for the biggest television fans and 50% for those working or wanting to work in the industry, our panels (专家小组) range in topics from “behind the scenes” looks at your favourite series, to more technical topics on where the medium and how technology is headed. Eventually, ATX Television Festival has the goal of serving both the community and industry professionals equally by giving them the opportunity to discuss and celebrate all aspects of TV together.
Austin is approximately in the middle of America, making travel from East or West coast more convenient. Austin TV production has a long history. We love our city and try to be part of our community by showing small businesses, local food, and working with arts organizations like Texas Film Commission, and Austin Film Festival—though we are not the “Austin Television Festival”. We are a national event that works with our members coming from all over the world.
Co-founders Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson have spent a decade in a variety of areas of the entertainment industry—from film & television production to working within the network & studio systems. Combining their knowledge, along with numerous good industry professionals that make up the Advisory Board, they are introducing a one-of-a-kind festival experience.

Science has a lot of uses. It can uncover laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that there’s always a temptation(诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.
Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others aren’t?
To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines(学科). Considering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unorthodox(非常规的), and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the reader’s attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they
begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.
On the whole,Brooks’ story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brooks’ attempt to translate his tale into science.
1、The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to__________. A.illustrate where science can be applied
B.demonstrate the value of Brooks’ new book
C.remind the reader of the importance of science
D.explain why many writers use science in their works
2、According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?
A.Its strong basis.
B.Its convincing points.
C.Its clear writing.
D.Its memorable characters.
3、What is the author’s general attitude towards the b ook?
A.Contradictory.
B.Supportive.
C.Cautious.
D.Critical.
4、What is the author likely to write about after the last paragraph?
A.Problems with the book.
B.Brooks’s life experience.
C.Death of the characters.
D.Brooks’s translation skills.
25.(10分)Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.
Gates said in an interview with the social networking and news website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades after that, though, the intelligence is strong enough to b e a concern.”
Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a terrible thought!
Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you.
It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.
I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an appliance which wants t o take over the world!
1、The author quoted Bill Gates’ words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the text________.
A.better-known B.more persuasive
C.better-organized D.more interesting
2、An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because _______.
A.it is much cleverer than us B.it would take over the world
C.it has the strong feeling of destroying us D.it would see us just as material
3、How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robotics?
A.Optimistic B.Worried
C.Disappointed D.Regretful
4、What does the text mainly focus on?
A.The benefits of future robots. B.The new applications of robots.
C.The concern for super intelligence. D.The popularity of robots in the future.
