On the night of November 14, 1978, a six-year-old Korean boy was flying to the United States. All he knew was that he was on a plane heading for somewhere. The plane landed at Kennedy International Airport, where he was greeted by a family. This young boy was me.

I have grown up in a town where there were few Asians, so I stuck out in the crowd. I made friends quickly and they treated me just like anyone else. You may ask if anyone made fun of my appearance. Well, of course, I met that kind of person. I just shrugged it off.

As an adopted child, I have something that others don't have. I have had the benefit of two families. I'm lucky to have got a chance to start a new life. But we must try never to forget our past. Some day I will go back to Korea to find out what kind of culture I left behind.

There is only one thing that I regret about being adopted. When I argue with my parents and they realize they are losing the argument, they sometimes wonder what I would be doing if I was back in Korea. I don't understand this because I thought the purpose of adopting someone was to give them a better chance of growing up in a family. Some day when I am older, I want to adopt a girl and raise her the way my parents have raised me, but I would do it better, for I know what went well and what did not. 21. A.The writer wants to forget his past.

B.The writer isn't sad about being adopted.

D.The writer doesn't know anything about Korea.

24. What does the writer want to do when he is older?

B. Tell his parents what they have done wrong.

C. Find out how to raise children in a better way.

D. Adopt a girl and raise her in a good way.

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next

generation?

UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition "depending on who needs it".

Nitrogen (氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons (神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all. Simard talks about "mother trees", usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down "mother trees" with no awareness of these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.

"We didn't take any notice of it" Simard says sadly. "Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance." If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.

It’ s not easy being a teenager(13至19岁的青少年)—nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. You can make your child feel angry, hurt, or misunderstood by what you say without realizing it yourself. It is important to give your child the space he needs to grow while gently letting him know that you’ ll still be there for him when he needs you.

Expect a lot from your child, just not everything. Except for health and safety problems, such as drug use or careless driving, consider everything else open to discussion. If your child is unwilling to discuss something, don’ t insist he tell you what’ s on his mind. The more you insist, the more likely that he’ ll clam up. Instead, let him attempt to solve(解决) things by himself. At the same time, remind him that you’ re always there for him should he seek advice or help. Show respect for your teenager’ s privacy(隐私). Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations.

Teach your teenager that the family phone is for the whole family. If your child talks on the family’ s telephone for too long, tell him he can talk for 15 minutes, but then he must stay off the phone for at least an equal period of time. This not only frees up the line so that other family members can make and receive calls, but teaches your teenager moderation(节制). Or if you are open to the idea, allow your teenager has his own phone that he pays for with his own pocket money or a part-time job.

32. The main purpose of the text is to tell parents ________.

A. how to get along with a teenager

B. how to respect a teenager

C. how to understand a teenager

D. how to help a teenager grow up

33. What does the phrase “clam up” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. become excited

B. show respect

C. refuse to talk

D. seek help

34. The last paragraph is about how to teach a teenager ________.

A. to use the phone in a sensible way

B. to pay for his own telephone

C. to share the phone with friends

D. to answer the phone quickly

35. What should parents do in raising a teenager according to the text?

A. Not allow him to learn driving or take drugs.

B. Give him advice only when necessary.

C. Let him have his own telephone.

D. Not talk about personal things with him.

In most campuses, there are students buying second-hand textbooks, 36 , who do not want to keep some of their textbooks upon graduation. There are two main reasons. 37 . The other is that students with second-hand books are not necessarily busy taking notes in class because the former of the books have done so in detail.
