Mom was a good cook. No, I take that back. She was a great cook. She could take a little hamburger a few potatoes and some tomatoes to make a feast that would make everyone drool(流口水) .And the dishes she could do with chicken well, it makes my mouth water to think about her delicious fried chicken. Her homemade chili sauce was second to none. Her bottled peaches were better than candies. When I was a little girl I once offered to make my sister Kathy’s bed for

a week if she would give me the last slice of toast made with Moms homemade bread and pineapple jam. Kathy w ouldn’t go for it. She prefe rred to eat the toast.

There is no doubt that Mom was a great cook most of the time. But if you put a steak in her pan, she would turn it into a texture(口感) of shoe leather. Of course, she didn’t do that on purpose She really did try her best. The night before I was married, she thought she was giving me a special treat by preparing a thick steak. It tasted as terrible as usual.

Several months later, my elder brother Bud took me out for lunch and ordered steaks. I wasn’t

excited, but since he was paying I figured I could try a few bites. When the waitress served our steaks, I was surprised at how good they smelled .Mom's steaks never smelled like that. Suddenly,

I understood why others spoke of steak fondly. I finished my steak greedily, and even stole a bite of Bud’s."“ You k now," I said to Bud, patting my stomach with real satisfaction, "I used to think Mom was a great cook. But it's hard to believe her steaks come from the same animal as these steaks. Of course she is, Bud said. "But think about it. She grew up during a time when her family was very poor. That’s when she learned to cook. How often do you think they had steak? Probably not very often, I guessed

Paragraph 1:

“ Probably never," Bud said.“ And when I was a little boy and Dad was in the army, don't remember ever having steak. It's only after our youngest sister was born that Mom and Dad could afford steak. So it isn’t that Mom isn't a good cook. It's just that she didn’t have a lot of experience of cooking steak. That’s the reason for my mother’s having a weakness in the kitchen. It was difficult for me to understand this at first, especially after we enjoyed Moms incredible fried chicken the day before.

Paragraph 2

But then it occurred to me that“ great” doesn' t mean" p erfect”. It just means" great”

It's great of Mom to have cooked delicious food for us for years and make everyone feel happy. But what did I do for her? I determined to give Mom a surprise. After learning from

a friend, I prepared a big dinner for Mom .When she saw the nice steak and had her first

bite of it, a happy smile appeared on her face.

Then came winter. One day, Rakesh boarded the train. But his eyes were constantly searching for something. He saw that man standing near the door. But where was that lady who used to be there with him? A few more days went by. But the lady could no longer be seen. Rakesh could not hold back his curiousness. He went up to the man and asked."Excuse me. I am Rakesh. I would like to ask you something. Hope you don't mind.” The man looked at him, expressionless. Rakesh then asked about the lady.

The man looked at him and said with tears in his eyes, " She was my wife. She passed away two weeks ago. She was battling cancer. The doctors had told her that she did not have much time left and she needed to rest. But she was determined to spend as much time with me as she could. Despite me asking her to take a rest, she used to come with me till we arrived at my office just to spend an extra hour with me daily.

Rakesh did not know what to say. When the train stopped at the man's destination, he got off. Rakesh noticed that the man was wearing the same sweater the lady used to knit every day. Paragraph 1:

Mrs Janson was 75 years old and lived alone in Keevy Street which was a little far from the downtown. Her children all lived in other cities with their family and only came once in a while. These years, maybe with the pressure of life or Just being busy, they visited their mother less. The old lady lived in the house with Sunny, her dog. She didn't have the Internet and of course no computer or cell phone. Besides a few conversations in warm days with some same old neighbors, her only connection with the outside world was the old small screened television and the Post, a local newspaper, which was still sent to her mail box regularly

Out of most people’s expectations, the mail carrier was a young lady. Her name was Morris. She came to the street every day, only with few exceptions. Different from other mail carriers, she didn't just throw the paper on the yard and cycle away. Most of the time, if she was not too busy, she would stop and came into Mrs Jansons house to have a chat with her, playing with Sunny, who would be happy, running to the girl and licking her cheeks. In fact, every time Morris was expected to come, the dog would sit in front of the door, looking at the end of the street, obviously waiting for her cycling up. Mrs Janson would quickly take out the cookies prepared early and make a cup of tea for the kind lady. Every time she came in, the house would be filled with laughter and happiness .

Last Christmas, Mrs Janson gave Momis some hand-made cream to keep her hands from getting so chapped(皴皱) due to delivering mail. The delivering girl thanked Mrs Janson and put the cream on her hands immediately with great delight, Mrs Janson was so happy that she could also help someone.
