In 1884, Thomas Staves decided to travel around the world by bicycle. No one had ever done that before. In April, he left his home in San Francisco. Four months later, in August, he got to Boston. By then, Thomas had no money. But he got help from Colonel Pope. Pope was a rich man who made and sold bicycles. He agreed to pay Thomas’s trip to Eu rope.

Thomas’s bike had a big wheel in front. Often his bike didn’t work, and there was always someone to fix it in Europe. Thomas liked Europe. There were wonderful things to see there. In Asia, the ride got harder. Most people couldn’t speak English. Sometimes people stopped him to look at his bicycle. In China, Chinese people gave him gifts. Thomas was pleased with the gifts, but they were heavy. They slowed him down. In January 1887, Thomas got back to San Francisco. He wrote about his trip and gave talks. He became well known.
