Unit2(a) Company history

I. Teaching Objectives:

i. To enable Ss to describe companies and their histories

ii. To practise reading for specific information

iii. To review the past simple and prepositions of time

II. Materials needed: Cards- 8 Cards: one set of cards per pair / grooup to be photocopied from T’s Guide

III. Teaching Process:

i.Unit overview

·The history of V olkswagen

Warmer: T elicits any knowledge / experience of VW / Beetles.

Reading:Ss doa quiz about V olkswagen in pairs then scan a text to find answers to the quiz. Ss then answer multiple –choice

questions.

V ocabulary: Ss scan the text again to pick out target vocabulary.

Language focus: Ss review the form of the past simple.

Speaking: Ss exchange information about their own company’s history. ·Company profile

V ocabulary: Ss match company descriptions with definitions.

Speaking: Ss order cards to make a company organigram the describe the company structure.

Ss exchange information about the present situation of their

own companies.

·Self-study

Language focus: Dap-fill exercise(past simple).

V ocabulary: Sorting exercise (prepositions of time: in, st, on).

Odd-one-out collocation exercise (verbs and nouns).

ii.Detailed study of this unit

Step 1 The history of Volkswagen

Warmer:

T asks Ss if they know what the most successful car ever is: the V olkswagen Beetle. T asks Ss what they know about V olkswagen (VW). Ex.1 Speaking:

The quiz focuses Ss’ attention on the subject matter of the unit and

introduces Ss to the history of VW. Ss do the quiz in pairs.

Ex.2 Reading

Ss check their answers to the quiz by scanning through the text on page 14. T reminds Ss that they are scanning the text for relevant information only .

Ex.3 Reading

T asks Ss to read the text again and answer the multiple-choice questions T makes sure Ss identify the relevant passage of text in support of their answers. Ss should always read the questions carefully, paying attention to features such as absolutes (e.g. completely ).

Note:

Ex.4 V ocabulary

Ss now read the text once more for detailed comprehension, searching for specific vocabulary to match a list of definitions. The words are in the same order in the text. T encourages Ss to use the new vocabulary in context. Only when the feedback has been completed does T invite questions concerning any remaining vocabulary problems from the text.

Working in pairs. T asks Ss to find out five things about the history of the partner’s company or VW Ss should pool their knowledge of company’s history to present to the class. On the other hand. Open groups would suit s genuine information exchange.

Reading: Ss do a jigsaw reading scanning the text to answe‘Right, Wrong, Doesn’t say’ questions.

V ocabulary: Ss scan the text for connectors of addition / contrast then use the connectors to link information from the text.

Speaking: Ss draw and explain maps of their companies activities. ·Self-study

V ocabulary: Gap-fill exercise( present continuous).

Language focus: Gap-fill exercise ( present simple vs continuous ).

V ocabulary: Matching exercises (companies, nationalities and activities).

Step 1 Investing in central Europe

Warmer (books closed): T asks Ss for examples of companies investing overseas and reasons why. T aks Ss for examples of inward investment and the changes it brings.

Ex.1 Reading

Ss look at the visual on page 17. T checks vocabulary such as plant, model, van, assembly and abbreviations such as ‘m’and ‘b n’. Ss then look at the questions and scan the visual for the answers. T asks Ss to support their answers with relevant information.

Ex.2 Grammar: This exercise is a reminder of the different uses of the presents tenses. Ss sort the uses into two groups. T asks Ss to give an example of each use.

Ex.3 Speaking

The pair work activity allows Ss to discuss the unit topic and also acts as a prediction exercise for the text and a chance to introduce some relevant vocabulary .Ss work in pairs /groups and list possible reasons for investment which can be written on the board before Ss do Ex. 1 in the next section,

Step 2 Driving eastwards

Ex.1 Reading

The jigsaw reading task is not an exam-style exercise but introduces the subject of cohesion Texts can be made cohesive through the use of various devices. In this case the text is made cohesive through lexical cohesion (e.g. the mention of VW and Fiat in paragraph 3 refers back to th e world’s largest car-makers in paragraph 2). The writer also uses (italicised) connectors of addition and contrast. Ss quickly read through the five extracts. When reporting back, Ss explain their decisions and quote relevant passages. T corrects as necessary and invites questions concerning difficult vocabulary

Ex.2 Reading

T advices Ss to read through all the questions before scanning through the text. Ss should check carefully whether there is enough evidence in the text to declare the statements either ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ if there is not, Ss should

T checks Ss understand what connectors of Addition and Contrast are and elicits examples. T asks Ss to find the italicised connectors in the text and put them into the correct group . When reporting back, Ss identify the passage and read the connector in context.

Ex.4 Speaking

T asks Ss to draw a map showing their company’s markets and activities. Ss exchange maps with a partner. Ss take it in turns to ask each other what the locations are and what activities take place there. Ss should be encouraged to ask follow-up questions.

二、教学设计

第一次课设计梗概(2课时) (1)告知学生本课程的总体安排、教材的处理,上课的方式、明确学习目标。 两个目标:通过听、说、读、写及分组讨论,案例表演和课堂演示,培养学生在商务情景下的工作习惯和交流意识;尽量通过BEC初级考试。 两个要求:为了提高学生的积极性并使他们了解在平时的学习中应提高哪些能力,告诉学生现在用人单位对员工的要求,第一要有一定的专业素质,二是情商要高,即懂得如何交流,如何为人处事。 教学方式:在教学中,主要采取活动教学,通过各种各样的活动,提高学生的自信心和交流能力。将学生分为六组,每组四人,一个组即为一个公司,每个组员都有一个职位,第一周确定每个组员的职位。第三、四周确定公司的名称、职能和业务范畴,并在全班演示。 (2)考核方式 平时表现:两个方面,一是整组的表现,即各个公司在各种课堂活动上的表现;二是个人的主动表现和提问表现.只要平时刻苦努力,积极主动。 期末卷面:一整套BEC初级的模拟题。 口试:口试的形式仿照BEC初级口试形式并加上案例表演。
