A

You are never given a wish without also having been given the power to make it come true.

——Richard Bach

Just imagine a young girl who learned dancing when she was three years old and whose greatest passion remains dancing. She loses one of her legs in an accident. Read on this true incident that took place almost 30 years ago and find out where she gives up dancing or fights back to realize what she believes in:

Sudha Chandran, a classical dancer from India, was cut off in the prime (鼎盛时期) of her career — her right leg had to be amputated (切除) after a car accident. Though the incident brought her bright career to a halt, she didn’t give up.

In the painful months that followed, she met a doctor who developed an artificial limb (假肢) made from vulcanized rubber (硫化橡胶) filled with sponge. So strong was her desire that she decided to go back to dancing after she had been fitted with an artificial leg. Knowing that she believed in herself and could fulfill her dream, Sudha began her courageous journey back to the world of dancing — learning to balance, bend, stretch, walk, turn, twist, twirl and finally dance.

After every public show, she would ask her dad about her performance. “You still have a long way to go.” was the answer she used to get in return.

In January 1984, Sudha made a comeback by giving a public show in Bombay. She performed in such a marvelous manner that it moved everyone to tears while pushing her to the Number One position again. That evening when she asked her dad the usual question, he didn’t say anything. He just touched her feet as a respect for a great artist.

Sudha’s comeback was so heart-warming that a film producer was inspired to capture the incident into a box office, his “Mayur i”.

When someone asked Sudha how she had managed to dance again, she said quite simply, “YOU DON’T NEED FEET TO DANCE.”

If you have fallen down, get up and brush the dust off your knees and move on. A temporary setback is not a defeat. For that matter, there’s no such thing as defeat. Nothing is impossible in this world.

If you have the will to win, you can achieve anything. And always remember that the whole world will help you when you want to achieve something.

21. When Sudha experienced the terrible accident, _________.

A. she had already made great achievement in dancing

B. she was a well-known dance teacher

C. she was a devoted dance learner

D. she had already earned a name as a pop dancer

22. Who played the most important role in her comeback?

A. Her doctor.

B. Her father.

C. Her audience.

D. A film producer.

23. By saying “YOU DON’T NEED FEET TO DANCE”, Sudha meant that _________.

A. the best dancer in the world uses heart rather than feet to dance

B. if you begin to learn dance at an early age, you can always be a good dancer

C. if you have a will to win, you can achieve anything

D. if you are given a wish, nothing is important

24. Which of the following is in correct order according to the time when the events happened?

a. Sudha encountered a lot of difficulties and challenges but she never gave up.

b. Sudha gave a performance in Bombay.

c. Sudha’s right leg was amputated after an accident.

d. Sudha struggled to learn the basic skills of dance

We have an amazing 99 friends at the age of 21 — more than at any other time in our life, according to a new study. The typical 21-year-old’s social circle nearly hits 100, with 13 “best”friends, 17 “close” friends and 70 acquaintances.

The research undertaken by skin care brand Nivea found our social circle peaks at 21 as we meet people at work while keeping in touch with friends from school and university. But as our working lives take over, we lose contact with some old friends causing the number to drop to around 68 by the time we reach 29-years-old. Although this decline continues into old age, it slows down slightly for people in their 30s when many of them become first-time parents. It is believed that this is because people form new friendships while on the maternity ward (产科病房), at post-natal (产后) groups and when taking their toddlers (学步时期的小孩) to nursery.

The Nivea Closeness Report found the balance between our numbers of “best friends”, “close friends”and “acquaintances”, remains fairly constant throughout our life time. The average Briton has 18 close friends and a friendship circle, when all Facebook and other social networking “friends” are included, of 208 people. The report found that men have more than twice the number of close friends, with around 27 compared to women who have just 12. Londoners are also the most sociable, with 39 “close friends”, while the Welsh have just 11.

The age of 21 is such a critical junction in life and that’s why we have so many friends then. As we get older we become more selective and have fewer close friends with whom we talk about the things that are really important to us. Perhaps when we are younger, instead of having one trusted confidante (知己) we share different things with a variety of different people.

25. According to the Nivea Closeness Report, who have the largest number of close friends?

A. Canadians.

B. Londoners.

C. The Welsh.

D. Americans.

26. Older people have fewer friends than the 21-year-olds because ________.

A. they think friends are no longer necessary

B. they are less interested in making friends

C. they are more selective and cautious

D. they have little time to make friends

27. The research suggests that the number of friends in one’s late twenties reduces by ______

or so, compared to that in one’s early twenties.

A. 70

B. 30

C. 20

D. 200

28. Why does the number of on e’s friends decrease slowly when he is about 30 years old?

A. Because they achieve success in business and get acquainted with more colleagues.

B. Because they make more friends through Facebook or the Internet.

C. Because many parents make friends with people who have similar experiences in bringing

up children.

D. Because as they grow older, they have more confidantes instead of acquaintances.

C

Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s greatest post-war prime minister, has died at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke, her family has announced. Lord Bell, her spokesman, said: “It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Margaret Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning. A further statement will be made later.”

Tributes (颂词) poured in from past and present leaders including U.S. President Barack Obama, former president George W. Bush and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, as well as British political leaders and Queen Elizabeth II. While many praised her strength of character and hailed her achievements, some detractors said her policies had been damaging to the U.K.

Global and political leaders across the world remembered former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher as a leader who altered the U.K.’s political and economic landscape and shaped global relations.

David Cameron, the U.K.’s current prime minister and leader of Mrs. Thatcher’s Conservative Party, said: “We’ve lost a great prime minister, a great leader, a great Briton.” Mr. Cameron who cut short a Europe trip to return to the U.K. on Monday afternoon, added: “She saved our country and I believe she will go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister.”

Mrs. Thatcher took office in 1979, as the U.K.’s first and only female prime minister, and resigned after 11 years in Downing Street, being the longest in office since 1827.Known as the Iron Lady, her championing of free-market economics and individual choice transformed Britain’s economy and she played a role in the end of the Cold War.

Mrs. Thatcher was the only British prime minister to leave behind a set of ideas about the role of the state which other leaders and nations strove to copy and apply. She will go down in history not only as Britain’s first female prime minister, but as the woman who transformed Britain’s economy making Britain a formidable (强大的) rival on the international stage.

Mrs. Thatcher’s funeral service will be held at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, which will be followed by a private cremation (火葬).

29. Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A. There was no female prime minister before 1979 in the history of Great Britain.

A. who undervalue and criticize someone or something

B. who publicly support a particular way of doing things

C. who are unconcerned about other people’s problems or feelings

D. who have a very strong desire or ambition

31. It can be inferred from paragraph 6 that _________.

A. the strategies for the development of Britain’s economy were totally set by Mrs. Thatcher

C. Mrs. Thatcher’s ideas about the role of the state were little valued by other nations

D. Mrs. Thatcher will be the only British prime minister remembered by the following

generations

32. Which would be the best title of the passage?

A. Britain Lost Its Iron Lady

B. Thatcher Becomes the First Female Prime Minister

C. A Look Back at Thatcher’s Life

D. Women Take on The Leading Political Roles

One clothing item kept in almost every man’s wardrobe is the tie. Wearing a tie to a social event for the first time can mark a young boy’s transition from youth into manhood. The wearing of a tie is also thought to transform a poorly-dressed man into a well-dressed one.

In the 17th century, men in the Western world first began using neckwear as a clothing item. Many Croatian introduced this fashion item to the French, who later developed it into a stylish accessory (配饰). In 1660, a group of Croatian soldiers visited Paris, which was considered a fashion capital even at that time. In order to impress King Louis XIV, the officers paraded in front of him wearing brightly colored silk handkerchiefs around their necks. The King was so impressed that he and many others in the royal court began wearing the neckwear, and the use of neckties entered the world of men’s fashion.

Over the centuries the style of the tie has evolved into what it is today. Fashion designers have dictated the size of the tie which, over the years, has varied from quite thin to very wide, as well as how the tie should be worn. The standard width of a necktie is 82.5 millimeters; the standard length is anywhere from 132 to 147 centimeters. After being tied, the tie should reach the waistband of the trousers. The tie’s knot should never be so large that it can cause the collar of the shirt to open, nor should it be too small so as to get “lost” in the collar. During the late 1960s and throughout the 70s, the accepted width and length of neckties changed, with many men choosing to wear wider and shorter ties.

The color of a tie can make as much of a statement as wearing a tie itself. During the

1980s, red and yellow were considered to be the colors of the “power” tie; if one wanted to make a statement in business, the color of the tie could send a message of strength and power to colleagues and competitors. Nowadays, more gentle colors such as blue or gray tend to be worn for business. Ties with brightly colored designs or cartoon characters printed on them tend to be saved for festive occasions or the office party.

33. We can conclude from the passage that ________.

A. the wearing of a tie stands for the improvement of one’s social status

B. the tie a man wears can tell others about his temper and personality

C. wearing a tie to a social event for the first time can be a sign of maturing for boys

D. at present most people prefer bright colored ties during festivals or in the office

34. According to the passage, if you want to attend a business meeting, _______ would be the

best choice.

A. a yellow tie

B. a blue tie

C. a bright colored tie

D. a tie with cartoon characters

35. What is the text mainly about?

A. The use of ties.

B. Ties and character.

C. The formation and development of ties.

D. The reason for wearing ties.

What’s That Sound?

Like humans, all animals communicate in some way. Many use actions or sounds: 36 Dolphins and whales use sound to communicate and to locate objects in the dark.

37 To make most sounds, these animals blow air through a hole on top of their bodies. Large whales make low-pitched sounds; smaller whales and dolphins make high-pitched ones. Many of these sounds are indiscernible to the human ear. Only the animals can hear them.

Dolphins use a whistle-like sound to communicate. 38 This is like the animal’s name, or signature. A dolphin might make this sound to greet others. It may also whistle loudly to signal for help. Whales also use whistles and “song”to communicate with other whales. Some of these songs can travel thousands of miles through the water.

Dolphins and whales also use sound to “see” things by sending clicking sounds into the water. If the “click” hits something, for example a rock, it creates an echo. This echo returns and gives whales and dolphins important information. 39 By using the clicks and echoes, dolphins and whales can swim around and locate food — even in the dark.

Today, scientists are studying these animals to better understand them, and the important sounds they create. 40

A. Scientists think that every dolphin has its own whistle.

B. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees to find honey.

C. It is often hard to see underwater, so sound is very important to whales and dolphins.

D. Most dolphins share the same type of whistles.

E. It tells them where something is, and how big it is.

F. They might have a lot to teach us about communication.

G. Birds sing or tap their beaks, and dogs bark.

Dear editor,

I’m writing to express my opinion on the case occurring in Fudan University. Many people take it for granted that acquiring knowledge is the essential task for the students who study at school. As students, we should lay emphasis on our studies, but in the meanwhile, students should also need to focus attention on mental health and lead a positive and optimistic life.

Schools should pay attention to security and mental problems. A variety of activities and lectures concerning mental health can be provided to the students on campus. Not only do students accumulate knowledge but also cultivate interpersonal skills to adapt to society. Thus, Students should participate in activities and develop hobbies to find proper solutions to releasing emotions.

To sum up , the whole society should concentrate on students’ mental health and more measures should be taken in case similar cases happen again.

Li Hua
