Have you ever been in a situation where a bad mood suddenly wraps itself around you and won’t let go? It’s kind of like being in the middle seat on a long flight, and you’re fighting for ar mrest (扶手) space with the person next to you.
I was reminded of this recently when my wife and I went to a rock concert that we’d been looking forward to all year. When the band came on, everyone, including me, jumped to our feet. But then, nobody sat down, and I couldn’t see the stage for the rest of the show. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed.
My wife could see the show fine, so she accepted it when I told her not to worry about me. But she was very sensitive. I knew that she could feel my displeasure, but I never want anyone else to feel uneasy just because I do. Moods are infectious, and I don’t want those I care for to get any of the fallout (后果) form whatever I may be dealing with. Still, I couldn’t force myself to have a good time. We got home and I was looking forward to sleeping off my disappointment, but it didn’t work. I felt sad the next day, and my disappointment didn’t go away for several days.
Looking back at the concert, it’s like I was a kid again and someone had taken Christmas a way. Yes, I let the experience get to me, but I’m only human, and sometimes that is going to happen. However, I learned that when something like this happens, just remember that it doesn’t mean that you’re a bad person or broken. You just don’t like where you are at the moment, but the bad feelings will pass. So the next time you can’t rise to the occasion because a bad mood has you in its hold, give yourself a break. You can still lea rn something positive, even if it takes you a while to figure out what that is.

What do you do if your nation has a severe water shortage and happens to be located in a desert? If you have the resources, you turn to technology, which is what a company in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates (阿联酋) (UAE for short) is planning to do. The country, which gets less than four inches of rain per year, could solve its issue with water shortage by dragging icebergs from Antarctica to its shores. The first such attempt will begin in 2018.
Once the iceberg is at UAE shores, the ice above the waterline would be cut off and crushed into drinking water, which would then be stored in large water tanks. The iceberg would also have a broader impact, says Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman A1 Shehi:
“Cold air out from an iceberg close to the shore of the Arabian Sea would cause rainstorms across the Arabian Gulf and the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula all year round. As the rising air expands, cools and condenses (冷凝) due to the decrease in air pressure, water vapor (水蒸气) is collected in the clouds, which becomes heavy and falls as rain.”
More icebergs will bring more water vapor and clouds, creating a profound effect on the regional climate over a decade, turning the desert into “green meadows”. The melting iceberg would also add fresh water to the Arabian sea, returning bio-diversity. There would also be a boost for tourism from all the people interested in looking at the icebergs.
The Emirates Iceberg Project comes from a group of efforts by NABL called “Filling the Empty Quarter”. The project aims to dramatically influence the deserts of the “Empty Quarter”, the planet’s largest sand desert. The region is also the richest oil-producing area in the world, including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE and Yemen.

People who drink three to four cups of coffee a day are more likely to see health benefits than harm，experiencing lower risks of premature death and heart disease than those who do not.
The research, which checked evidence from more than 200 previous studies, also found coffee consumption was linked to lower risks of diabetes (糖尿病), liver disease, dementia (痴呆) and some cancers. Three or four cups a day give the greatest benefit, the scientist said, except for women who are pregnant or who have higher risk of breaking bones.
Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed drinks worldwide. To better understand its effects on health, Robin Poole, a public health specialist at Britain’s University of Southampton, led a research team in a review of 201 studies based on observational research and 17 studies based on clinical trials across all countries and all settings. “Coffee drinking appears safe within usual patterns of consumption,” Poole’s team concluded in their research, published in the BMJ British medical journal late on November 21.
Drinking coffee was constantly linked with a lower risk of death from all causes. The largest reduction in relative risk of premature death and heart disease was seen in people consuming three cups a day, compared with non-coffee drinkers. Drinking more than three cups a day was not linked to harm, but the beneficial effects were less palpable.
Poole’s team noted that because their review included mainly observational data, no firm conclusion could be drawn about cause and effect. But they said their findings support other recent reviews and studies of coffee intake.
