A primary school principal in north China has become the latest internet celebrity for busting some cool moves during a morning exercise routine with his students.

Every morning, 40-year-old principal Zhang Pengfei at the Xi Guan Primary School in Linyi county, Shanxi province would lead about 700 pupils on the playground in a synchronised “ghost shuffle” routine—a dance that incorporates contemporary jazz steps with heel, toe and arm movements. The bold headmaster thought the fun and energetic exercise routine would better encourage students to get active i nstead of “being glued to their mobile phones”.

The school’s new 30-minute dance routine has replaced the government-imposed broadcast callisthenics programme(广播体操), a short workout that has been a requirement at every primary, middle and secondary school in China since 1951. “I thought we needed a change because the students have been losing interest in doing the broadcast callisthenics routine,” Zhang told Southern Metropolis News.

The dedicated principal said he came across a group of people doing the “ghost shuffle” routine at a public plaza last summer and decided to learn the dance himself. “I thought the dance would be great for kids,” he said. “The music is full of energy and it really gets the happy feeling of flowing.” In October.

he introduced the choreographed (编舞) routine to all of his students and shortly after, even teachers and staff were joining in. “Now the students aren’t constantly on their phones. I sometimes catch them watching different dance routine videos and learning new moves!” the proud headmaster told reporters.

An unconventional new initiative(首创)in Canada will soon allow doctors to prescribe art to their patients — by giving them free access to a local museum. Wandering through the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), these patients and their

loved ones will be able to feast their eyes on the peaceful collections of art.

The initiative is the first of its kind in the world. And while you certainly can’t replace a conventional treatment with a couple of paintings, the idea is for such “prescriptions” to assist a person’s current treatment plan. Under the new program, members of the Francophone Association of Doctors in Canada (MFDC) will be able to hand out up to 50 prescriptions for their patients.

These prescriptions will be available for those with a wide range of mental and physical illnesses, and each of them will allow two adults and two children to visit the museum for free.

“By offering free admission to a safe, welcoming place, a relaxing experience, a moment of relief, and an opportunity to strengthen ties with loved ones, MMFA-MFDC Museum Prescriptions contribute to the patient’s well-being and recovery,” explains a news conference from the MMFA.

It may look a lot like a marketing effort for the museum but there’s also increasing evidence that the display of visual art, especially if it’s showing nature, can have positive effects on health outcomes.

In some ways, the benefits of looking at art appear a little similar to physical activity. A systematic review of clinical art therapy (疗法) found that visual art has significant and positive effects on depression, anxiety, mood, and self-esteem. Findings like these are slowly gaining attraction in the medical community, making artwork a higher priority (优先) in hospitals around the world.

In the US, nearly half of all health care institutions have reported including art in health care programming, such as art therapy and the placement of visual art in hospitals. With spaces dedicated (专用的) to art therapy and also a medical consultation room, the MMFA already provides services for people with mental health issues, eating disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease, just to name a few.

28. How will some Canadian doctors treat their patients?

A. Introducing fine arts to their patients.

B. Feasting them in a peaceful and welcoming place.

C. Keeping them company through the Montreal Museum.

D. Giving them a prescription to access a local museum for free.

29. MMFA thinks the new initiative in Canada can be_______.

A. a chance to make friends

B. a help with patients’ recovery

C. the best option for the treatment plan

D. a substitute for conventional treatment

30. Why does the museum join in the program?

A. To strengthen ties with doctors.

B. To advance the science of medicine.

C. To promote the museum into market.

D. To make visual art known to the public.

31. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. Fine arts will take the place of medicine.

B. Artists rarely suffer from some mental diseases.

C. More than 50 prescriptions are available for patients.

D. Art will be included in Canadian doctors’ prescriptions.

The mass death of flying foxes in extreme heat in North Queensland last month underlines the importance of University of Queensland wildlife research released today. The UQ research sheds light on how various species have responded to major climate events.

A study led by UQ School of Earth and Environmental Science researcher Dr. Sean Maxwell has spent more than 70 years quantifying the responses of various species.

“The growing fr equency and intensity of extreme weather events such as cyclones, droughts and floods is causing unpredictable and immediate changes to ecosystems and blocking existing management efforts,” Dr. Maxwell said. “Some of the negative responses we found were quite concerning, including more than 100 cases of dramatic population declines and 31 cases

of local population extinction following an extreme event.”

“Populations of critically endangered bird species in Hawaii, such as the palia, have been annihilated due to drought, leaving none of its kind, and populations of lizard species have been wiped out due to cyclones in the Bahamas.”

Cyclones were the most common extreme event for birds, fish, plants and reptiles, while mammals and amphibians were most responsive to drought events, with drought leading to 12 cases of major population decline in mammals. Drought also led to 13 cases of breeding declines in bird populations and 12 cases of changes in the composition of invertebrate communities.

UQ Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science director Professor James Watson said the detailed information would help inform ecosystem management.

“The research clearly shows species will respond, often negatively, to extreme events,” Professor Watson said. “As climate change continues to ensure extreme climate and weather events are more and more common, we now need to act to ensure species have the best chance to survive. Wherever possible, high quality and intact habitat areas should be retained, as these are the places where species are most resilient(易恢复的) to increasing exposure to extreme events.”

32. How was the UQ research conducted?

A. By observing extreme weather events.

B. By protecting the endangered species.

C. By recording reactions of animals to extreme climate.

D. By analyzing the reason why mass animal death happened.

33. What does the underlined word “annihilated” in paragraph

4 probably mean?

A. destroyed.

B. disappeared.

C. decreased.

D. defeated.

34. Which of the following sentences is true about extreme weather events?

A. Cyclones wiped out populations of lizard.

B. Birds and mammals are most responsive to cyclones.

C. Drought caused 13 cases of distinction in bird populations.

D. Drought caused 12 cases of population decline in mammals.

35. What can we infer from Professor Watson’s words?

A. Animals often show negative responses to extreme events.

B. The existing management ways for wildlife protection are limited.

C. Complete and undamaged habitats are of great importance to species’ survival.

D. Different methods should be adopted to ensure the survival of different species.

第二节书面表达

Dear David ,

How’s everything going? As your birthday is drawing near, I've prepared a gift for you. It's a Chinese painting “ bamboo”, which I specially drew for you.

In Chinese culture, bamboo carries many best wishes and excellent qualities. On one hand, it stands straight and stays green all year round, so it's always full of life. I wish you as strong and energetic as bamboo. On the other hand, it's hard outside but hollow inside. If compared to bamboo, one is usually considered to be strong-willed and modest. All in all, we use bamboo to represent a noble and gentle person.

I hope you like the gift and wish you a happy birthday. Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing th in little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am. 36.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.Lady, are you rich? B.A story of Thanksgiving Day C.Don't forget how rich you are D.Does cups and saucers match well? 37.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.The girl thought the writer was rich just because she wanted to make the writer happy. B.The writer had thought she wasn't rich because her supplies were not expensive. C.If cups and saucers match well, they are a best pair even though cheap.

A I have had all kinds of interesting neighbors since the early days of my life. When I was a baby I would stand in my wooden crib(婴儿床) and watch the world go by through the window. Some neighbors watched me watching the world go by with by big, wondering eyes and found me very interesting. They used to call me “the beauty at the window”. The early neighbors I could remember were from the second house I lived in. Peter and Paul were twins. We went to play school together although they were a year older than me. I well remember the Alsatian they had which ran into me when I was invited to their fifth birthday party. Needless to say, I was well-known for my loud screams after the party. But they said the pet was scared of my screams and didn’t appear until the party was over. Peter and Paul were the first boys who encouraged me to climb the gate. I could never tell the difference between boy and girl behaviors—I just did what I thought was fun. Not only did I have a great time performing that first climb, I also got my skirts dirty, and was criticized by my mother. The Japanese neighbors I had living in this same house were my favorite, as they introduced me to sea-salt baked shrimps (烤虾) which were so crisp that you could eat the shrimp totally. They gave me some seaweed for my birthday. Thankfully, no other member in my family enjoyed the seaweed as I did. Perhaps what my mother used to joke to me was true, that I was picked up out of the dustbin that belonged to a Japanese home. Maybe sometimes it is difficult to find good neighbors in this society. But all it takes is a spark(火花) to get a fire going. I have decided to be that spark wherever I live and pass love on to my neighbors. 21. We can guess "the Alsatian" in the twin brothers' home is ___________. A. a small child B. an interesting toy C. a dog D. a bicycle 22. From the passage we can know that the author___________. A. enjoyed the Japanese neighbors' cooking style most B. had difficulty getting on with the twin brothers' family C. was described as interesting when playing with boys D. had many neighbors that worked in restaurants 23. What can we infer from the passage? A. The author often moved to other places. B. Peter and Paul liked to play tricks on others. C. The neighbors the author had were good at cooking. D. The author had a good relationship with her neighbors. B Below are four ads on the website.Artful Experience It’s an artful experience even if you’re artistically challenged.
