Unit1

The offensive had already lasted three days, but we had not gained much gr ound. The division commander instructed our battalion to get around the rear of the enemy and launch a surprise attack. To do so, however, we had to cro ss a marshland and many of us were afraid we might get bogged down in the mud. Our battalion commander decided to take a gamble. By a stroke of luck , thanks to the cold weather which made the marshland freeze over, we arrive d at our destination before dawn and began attacking the enemy from the rea r. This turned the tide of the battle .The enemy, caught off guard, soon surren dered.

Automobiles have, since their invention, revolutionized transportation, cha nging forever the way people live, travel, and do business. On the other hand, they have brought hazards, especially highway fatalities. However, today the application of computer technology and electronic sensors in designing and m anufacturing cars makes it possible to eliminate most of traffic accidents. For

example, electronic sensors mounted in your car can detect alcohol vapor in t he air and refuse to start up the engine. They can also monitor road condition s by receiving radio signals sent out from orbiting satellites and greatly reduce your chance of getting stuck in traffic jam.

Well begun, half done, as the saying goes. It is extremely important for a job applicant to do his homework while seeking employment. From my standpoint, whether or not one has done his homework clearly makes a difference in his chance of success.

I have a friend who is earning somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 thousand dollars a year in a large computer software company. He told me that from his own experience the decision makers who interview

prospective employees like people who are well prepared. Those who make no endeavor to learn as much about his prospective employer as possible don't have much of a chance of success.

Globalization has great implications for young Chinese. For example, you ng farmers are moving on a large scale to urban areas to look for jobs. And fo r those who aspire to study abroad or work in foreign-invested enterprise, En glish has become increasingly important. At the same time, a considerable nu mber of overseas Chinese students have returned home in recent years, for th ey hold an optimistic outlook for the long run growth for the Chinese economy . The internet has strengthened the links between the Chinese young people and those elsewhere. They follow the latest trend and copy foreign fashions. Some of them don’t seem to care traditional Chinese culture, let alone carry t hem forward, which has given rise to worries that the traditional Chinese cultu re might one day vanish.

For my own part, I find that appearances are all too often deceptive. For insta nce, you might be wrong if you judged by appearances only people like Edwar d Hyde Burton. In appearance, he seemed a man all of a piece. He was a tiny little fellow with white hair and mild blue eyes, gentle and candid. Neverthele ss, he turned out to be very cruel. He insulted and fooled Lenny who was dow n and out and made him commit himself to an insane venture. What was still more surprising was that he was completely indifferent to Lenny’s death. With out doubt, Burton was a man with a heart of stone.

Unit 6

Today we are under constant pressure to work longer hours, to produce more , and to possess more. Lots of people hole the wrong perception that happine ss lies in working hard and earning good money.

Many women today feel the same stress to work and get ahead, and at the s ame time, to nurture their offspring and shoulder the burden of domestic resp onsibilities.

Research shows that workaholism tends to distance us from our immediate families. It forces us to toil longer and longer hours, leaving a minute fraction of our time to be physically and emotionally available to our loved ones. Intim acy among family members is doomed to die in the process.

1 The moment Hope, just nine months old, saw another baby fall, tears welled up in her own eyes and she crawled off to be comforted by her mother, as though it were she who had been hurt. And 15-month-old Michael went to get his own teddy bear for his crying friend Paul; when Paul kept crying, Michael retrieved Paul's security blanket for him. Both these small acts of sympathy and caring were observed by mothers trained to record such incidents of empathy in action. The results of the study suggest that the roots of empathy can be traced to infancy. Virtually from the day they are born infants are upset when they hear another infant crying – a response some see as the earliest precursor of empathy. 2 Developmental psychologists have found that infants feel sympathetic distress even before they fully realize that they exist apart from other people. Even a few months after birth, infants react to a disturbance in those around them as though it were their own, crying when they see another child's tears. By one year or so, they start to realize the misery is not their own but someone else's, though they still seem confused over what to do about it. In research by Martin L. Hoffman at New York University, for example, a oneyear-old brought his own mother over to comfort a crying friend, ignoring the friend's mother, who was also in the room. This confusion is seen too when one-year-olds imitate the distress of someone else, possibly to better comprehend what they are feeling; for example, if another baby hurts her fingers, a one-year-old might put her own fingers in her mouth to see if she hurts, too. On seeing his mother cry, one baby wiped his own eyes, though they had no tears. 3 Such motor mimicry, as it is called, is the original technical sense of the word empathy as it was first used in the 1920s by E. B. Titchener, an American psychologist. Titchener's theory was that empathy stemmed from a sort of physical imitation of the distress of another, which then evokes the same feelings in oneself. He sought a word that would be distinct from sympathy, which can

Unit 1 Text A Howard Gardner, a professor of education at Harvard University, reflects on a visit to China and gives his thoughts on different approaches to learning in China and the West. Learning, Chinese-Style Howard Gardner 1 For a month in the spring of 1987, my wife Ellen and I lived in the bustling eastern Chinese city of Nanjing with our 18-month-old son Benjamin while studying arts education in Chinese kindergartens and elementary schools. But one of the most telling lessons Ellen and I got in the difference between Chinese and American ideas of education came not in the classroom but in the lobby of the Jinling Hotel where we stayed in Nanjing. 2 The key to our room was attached to a large plastic block with the room number on it. When leaving the hotel, a guest was encouraged to turn in the key, either by handing it to an attendant or by dropping it through a slot into a box. Because the key slot was narrow, the key had to be positioned carefully to fit into it. 3 Benjamin loved to carry the key around, shaking it vigorously. He also liked to try to place it into the slot. Because of his tender age and incomplete understanding of the need to position the key just so, he would usually fail. Benjamin was not bothered in the least. He probably got as much pleasure out of the sounds the key made as he did those few times when the key actually found its way into the slot. 4 Now both Ellen and I were perfectly happy to allow Benjamin to bang the key near the key slot. His exploratory behavior seemed harmless enough. But I soon observed an interesting phenomenon. Any Chinese staff member nearby would come over to watch Benjamin and, noting his lack of initial success, attempt to assist. He or she would hold onto Benjamin's hand and,
