A new study has discovered that meditation(冥想)and oxygen sport together reduce depression. The Rutgers University study found that this mind and body combination, done twice a week for only two months, reduced the symptoms for a group of students by 40 percent.

“We are excited by the findings because we saw such a meaningful improvement in both clinically depressed and non-depressed students,” said lead author Dr. Brandon Alderman. “It is the first time that both of these two behavioral ways have been looked at together for dealing with depression.”

Researchers believe the two activities have an interactive effect on combating depression. Alderman and Dr. Tracey Shors discovered that a combination of mental and physical training (MAP) enabled students with major depressive disorder not to let problems or negative thoughts defeat them.

Rutgers researchers say those who participated in the study began with 30 minutes of focused attention meditation followed by 30 minutes of oxygen sport. They were told that if their thoughts drifted to the past or the future they should refocus on their breathing, enabling those with depression to accept moment-to-moment changes in attention.

Shors, who studies the production of new brain cells in the hippocampus—part of the brain involved in memory and learning—says scientists have shown in animal models that oxygen sport exercise keeps a large number of certain cells alive.

The idea for the human intervention(干预)came from her laboratory studies, she says, with the main goal of helping individuals acquire new skills so that they can learn to recover from stressful life events.

By learning to focus their attention and exercise, people who are fighting depression can acquire new learning skills that can help them process information and reduce the overwhelming recollection of memories from the past, Shors says.

“We know these treatments can be practiced over a lifetime and that they will be effective in improving mental health.” said Alderman. “The good news is that this intervention can be practiced by anyone at any time and at no cost.”

You may think, salt is just a simple cooking element we shake on our food for a little extra taste. But salt is much more than that. Without salt our muscles would not move. Our nervous systems would not operate. Our hearts would not beat.

But do not think rubbing salt into a wound will help. Doing that would be painful and not he al the wound. “To rub salt into a wound” is an idiom that means to purposefully make a bad situation worse.

Early humans got the salt they needed to stay alive from the animals they killed. But advances in agriculture led to a diet low in salt. So, humans needed to find other sources. Those who lived near the ocean or other natural sources for salt were lucky. Those who did not had to trade for salt. In fact, people used salt as a method of payment in many parts of the ancient world. The word “salary” comes from the word “salt”.

Salt also played an important part in population movement and world exploration. Explorers understood that if they could keep food fresh, they could travel longer distances. So they used salt to preserve food and explore the world.

Salt was so important that, according to food historians, it was traded pound-for-pound for gold. Today, people still use the expressions “worth one's salt” or “worth one's weight in salt”. The expressions describe a person of value.

A person might also be called “salt of the earth”. That description means he or she is dependable and trustworthy. However, when you say “I think we should take what he said with a grain of salt”you mean you accept it but maintain a degree of doubt about its truth.

8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Salt plays an important part in our life.

B. Salt makes food tasty.

C. Salt is considered to be part of our muscles.

D. Salt is sure to damage nervous systems.

9. A beggar’s bread was stolen last night, which means_________.

B. rubbing salt in a wound

C. a diet low in salt

D. worth his salt

10. If you describe a person as a great help, you mean_________ .

A. he rubs salt in a wound

B. he is often taken as a grain of salt

C. he often uses salt to preserve meat

D. he is worth his weight in salt

A. Salt Is More Than a Four-letter Word.

B. Salt Is a Basic Element in Cooking.

C. Salt Is a Word with a Long History.

D. Salt Is Popular with Different People.

For the business traveler who is all about efficiency: Check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum of trouble. When you are pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process.

1. Yotel New York

The self-service kiosks at this high-tech New York hotel work just like the ones you’d see at an airport. There are just five-steps to register and obtain your card key. There is even a robotic luggage bellboy. You tap in the number of bags you are carrying and sizes, then wait for a robot arm to swing down and store your luggage in a locker (say, for a day trip). This also speeds up the check-in process if the first thing you need to do, like me, is head to a series of meetings.

2. Marriott Detroit Airport

Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroi t Airport hotel. (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) Here is the basic idea: you download the iphone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.

3. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. Like the Yotel, the kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole

process took about three minutes, when I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out. An agent meets you in the lobby with an ipad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line.

4. Radisson: LaCrosse

The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster, at a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you scan the barcode to get your key without any other steps required. It’ssuper fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well.

5. Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to check in?

A. Yotel New York and Marriott Detroit Airport.

B. Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson: LaCrosse.

C. Marriott Detroit Airport.and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.

D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis and Radisson: LaCrosse.

6. Which hotel will send you a receipt by email?

A. Yotel New York.

B. Marriott Detroit Airport.

C. Radisson: LaCrosse.

D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.

7. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. AtYotel New York, a robot will help you with all the check-in process.

B. With its check-in app, you may enter your room in Marriott without a key.

C. The barcode you receive from Radisson contributes to the fast check-in.

D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis is close to an airport terminal.

Jonathan Cranwell sat on a hard bench behind the long narrow desk and watched the flies fly lazily in the sun. The drone of the younger boys reading letters and the older boys reciting Latin verbs made him sleepy. Jonathan had to force his eyes to stay open. He wanted to learn something new!

He looked up at the schoolmaster’s high desk in the front of the room. The new teacher was from Harvard College. Jonathan’s father had been impressed with him. The boys had already had several other teachers, but none of them seemed to inspire Jonathan. So far, there was nothing to show that this one was special , though he’d only been there two days.

“It’s too hot to sit and memorize lessons,” the schoolmaster said. “We’ll move outdoors for the next part of our lesson.” He led the group of boys into the schoolyard. “You younger boys, dig for grubs and beetles ( 幼虫和甲虫). Count their feet. See if you can describe their shells”

Jonathan watched the teacher surrounded by laughing young students. No one had ever

used the schoolyard itself fo r a classroom. “What next ?” he thought. He didn’t have time to think about the younger boys, for he was running after butterflies and dragonflies himself.

Jonathan and his friends liked this new way of learning.

“It will be a clear night tonight. Go outside and look at the sky,” said the schoolmaster. “Look at the stars and notice their brightness and the patterns they make. These patterns have names from Greek mythology(神话), names like Orion, Aries, and others. Tomorrow we will learn about the ancient sto ries on them.”

“How is the new schoolmaster ?” asked Jonathan’s father that evening, when Jonathan announced he was going out to look at the sky.

“He’s different from any other schoolmaster we’ve had,” Jonathan admitted. “He seems interested in everything around him, and he wants us to be curious too. He even used the schoolyard as a classroom!”

“So Mr. John Adams and his new ways make school useful to you after all,” joked Jonathan’s father.

“I believe he has,” said Jonathan. “I know I won’t forget the lessons he has taught us!”

Companies that employ workers have an interest in keeping the workplace safe.Job-related injuries are something that responsible employers avoid. They take the time and use company

resources to make sure that the people who come to work each day are safe.

Not only does this make good sense from a moral standpoint, but it also makes good financial sense. If a worker is injured on the job,it costs the company in terms of lost mam tours, increased insurance costs, worker’s compensation premiums(赔偿金),and legal posts.

Productivity is lost when other workers have to stop doing their jobs to deal with the situation.Even after the injured worker has been sent home or taken to hospital, other employees may be unfocused or need to take time off from work in the result of the incident.

When a workplace is safe, workers feel more comfortable and confident when they are in that environment. Productivity gets a promotion, and profits follow suit.Absence also drops when employers take steps to carry out an effective safety program.

Investing in a good safety program brings with it other benefits too. When employees feel safe in the workplace and absence rates are kept down, they can focus on serving the company’s customers properly. Many companies offer produces or services that are similar to those that other companies carry or provide.Customers will decide which companies they want to deal with based on which one they feel provides the best customer service.Increased absence means longer wait times and customers are quite prepared to move on to another company they feel will be able to help them in a more timely manner if they are not getting the level of attention that they deserve.

Everyone in the workplace has a duty and a responsibility to do whatever they can to keep the working environment safe.Managers should deal with employee concerns about safely issues in an appropriate manner.

Middle school graduation style may be a bit more casual than formal high school or college ceremonies, but the move from junior to senior high school is still an important occasion that can be celebrated in many ways.

The decision whether students will wear caps and gowns(礼服)for middle school graduation is usually up to the individual school. Some feel that this is the perfect way to commemorate the special occasion, while others feel the cap and gown is unnecessary for a junior high ceremony.

For those schools that choose not to use caps and gowns,it is typically suggested that students wear dress clothes for the occasion.Students may also be encouraged to dress for graduation in a uniform manner, such as white shirts and black pants or skirts,or educators may suggest dressing in the school colors.Schools that choose to have students wear academic regalia (制服)for the ceremony may choose to purchase gowns in a variety of sizes from a store such as Graduate Affairs, and then let students borrow them, and reuse them each year.Caps may be purchased by a Parent-Teacher Organization or by the individual graduates.

Parents may choose to host open house or party when their child graduates from middle school. This is typically an informal affair, such as a barbeque or pool party,or simply appetizers or cake to honor the graduate.Simple backyard games such as volleyball, bocce ball, and Frisbee are a fun way to entertain young teens, tweens, and well-wishers.Other party games and a band might also be considerations for a large or more complicated gathering.

Lately,my 90-year-old mom has been more and more quiet and sleepy. This is very odd and disturbing. At the same time,my 92-year-old father has been suffering his own health problems. It is terrible to see my father struggle to get her to talk, say something, when she doesn’t have the energy.

The other day,I recalled how my mother used to visit a woman named Mrs.Demopolis,a Greek immigrant, who made the best baklava(果仁饼)!She gave lessons on baking hem to my mother. Also,my mom used to bake baklava often for a time and that was absolute pleasure. As I spoke of this over the phone,my silent mom cheered up and said how much she’d like o have one again.

Now,they live in Fl orida and I like in Wales,UK with my husband and children,so I can’t go and bring her some baklava or even make some in her kitchen. But what I did suggest was that my father or sister should buy some baklava at a Greek Restaurant and I should do she same, and wouldn’t it be fun to eat our baklava at exactly the same time and so,be together sharing the moment and the pleasure? Both parents loved the idea and we decided to do it.It was lovely to hear a little happiness in her voice.

Tow days later we both had our baklava and shared the experience. It meant a lot to my parents, and to me,to do this.My mother said she wants to do this again, maybe with another food or even baklava again! Why not?And as she only keeps losing weight instead of gaining,it is good for her to find foods that appeal to her appetite. It is becoming harder to find ways to communicate over the phone, but this was this was at least a very good way to do so.And it was nice,as well,to remind us of pleasant memories of our past.

You have decided to take on a vacation over the winter break. But simply deciding to take a trip is not enough to actually make it wonderful. To have a wonderful trip, you have to make a bunch of small decisions: How do you decide on the perfect destination? When should you travel? Where are you going to stay? What adventures and excursions (远足) should you try?

Let’s use Henry Ford’s car business to explain how this process works. Most people believe that Ford’s decision to mass produce the Model T is the key cause of his success. However, what we fail to are all the small decisions added together that produce a large result.

As a matter of fact, Ford made a few small but more significant decisions, which made mass

producing the Model T successful. For example, he reduced the standard workday from nine hours to eight. He also doubled the pay of the workers. These two decisions alone reduce employee turnover (离职) from 37 percent to just 16 percent. And even though he reduced the workday by an hour, productivity rose from 40 percent to 70 percent. His decisions to focus on employee moral and improve the lives of his workers made him become the world’s greatest automobile maker and an extremely rich, person, who has at least a thousand million dollars. This was after he reduced the price of the Model T from $ 800 to $ 350 over nine years.

All these actions, reducing the amount of hours worked per day, doubling their pay and lowering the price of the car, counterintuitive (违反直觉的) and should have made him lose money. However, making a few smaller decisions that really matter made the whole decision of mass production a big success.

12. How can you have a wonderful trip?

A. By looking not for season changes.

B. By making an immediate decision.

C. By going an overall consideration.

D. By going along with close friends.

B. The Power of Small Decisions

C. The Key to a Better Life

Prateek Sharma was born into a family of farmers. After 10 years of being a chief manager of Kotak Mahindra Bank, he did a good job and earned a good pay. But Prateek couldn’t continue the corporation life with ease, as his heart was always in farming. So he worked as a banker on weekdays and on weekends travelled 100 km to get to his 5-acre farm in Dhaba Khurd.

By the end of 2015, Prateek had set up a house on his farm to grow offseason vegetables. Prateek thought he’d quit his job once he was able to earn enough from farming, but this wasn’t

an easy decision to make. This was because costs to grow these vegetables were very high, along with the fact that farmers weren’t a part of the value chain and thus couldn’t decide the price of their own vegetables.

Fortunately, Prateek met Vinay Yadav, another educated farmer. They then decided to start their own value chain and sell their vegetables and grains, while skipping the middlemen. The variety of vegetables they grew wasn’t e nough, so they decided to form a group of farmers.

Once the plan was ready, the group was registered by the name of Farmer Producer Organization(FPO). However, the trial failed in the first year as most of the farmers were grain growers and had limited knowledge of growing vegetables. However, the largest reason was the switch to organic from chemical.

Luckily, once the soil was used to organic methods, the. next round of crops were successful and the FPO had a good amount of produce, So at the end of 2017, Prateek finally quit his job and devoted all his time to farming. No evidence shows that the key to learning a new language is surrounding yourself with native speakers of that language. But what if those native speakers are Dora the Explorer and Diego?

It turns out television and radio might be even better tools for new language learners than previously thought. According to two recent studies by Scientific American, it is possible to futher your understanding of a new language without actively practicing or fully paying attention.

For starters, research published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America suggests that language learners who focus continuously on learning new sounds keep no more information than those who take occasional breaks. While one group of study participants practiced distinguishing three difficult Hindi sounds for one hour a day over the course of several days, another group alternately(交替地) spent 10 minutes on learning and 10 minutes on an intentionally distracting(使人分心的) task as the Hindi sounds played in the background. When tested on the sounds, the distracted group performed just as well as the focused group.

And a following study published in the Journal of Memory and Language further validates the power of inactive learning. Researchers found that Spanish students learning the Basque accent improved less when they were instructed to repeat sounds back during their training; listening to new sounds silently actually resulted in better memory.

So, is it time to lay off your tutor and buy a box set of Cordon Salvaje? Not quite. While this growing body of research suggests inactive language learning is an amazing tool in your language learning, the value of focused practice cannot be ignored. “You need to come to class and pay attention,” says Melissa Baese-Berk, a language expert and co-author of one of the studies, “But when you go home, turn on the TV or turn on the radio in that language while you’re cooking dinner, and even if you’re not paying total attention to it, it’s going to help you.”

So get out there and learn… but not too hard. While you’re at it,it wouldn’t hurt to improve your grammar skills,

Ever since I started my freshman year in another state, I’ve realized that p eople make many assumptions about college students, many of which are based on partying. Even my sociology professor jokingly told our class; “If your motto isn’t ‘I am partying therefore I am,’ you’re collegeing wrong.”

Whenever I say partying isn’t fun, I get the same response; wide-eyed stares, dropped jaws and a resounding “Seriously?” which makes me feel like I’m being judged.

Don’t get me wrong –I’ve tried to enjoy dancing in hot, crowded spaces to loud rap music. But at last, I’ve always escaped to an empty comer while trying to ignore rude, crazy people. I wondered if I was weird for wanting to stay in on a Friday night to read a book. I even questioned whether or not I was living the “authentic” college experience.

“Maybe you - a shy boy - just nee d to go out more.” Friends have said. Suggestions like these make me think about food. Have you ever tasted something that someone else really likes and you don’t? When that happens to me, I have a habit of eating more hoping that it will eventually taste good. Does that ever work? No.

For me, partying is a lot like that. From what I can tell, I’m just not a fan. I’m not trying to set myself apart - I just have a different definition of fun.

As you begin to think about your present college life, I hope this helps you realize that there isn’t just one way to experience college life. Some turn up at a party to relax. I turn to a good book. Which option have you made in college? And remember: college is a place where you can keep yourself originally. It means not going with the flow and means figuring out what you want for yourself, originating your own values and thinking a way towards your future success.

When she is on the stage, audiences often go silent. They also laugh, shout and cry. But this doesn’t come easily for someone who comes from a village that sits at the base of a huge mountain range in Central America. When she first appeared at school, she was teased by others for being short and different. She never spoke, so they called her “moose”.

Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world and famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, and cycling culture. It is the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands and often referred to as the “Venice of the North” because of its wide system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.

Must-See Attractions

Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. The top museums to visit are the Rijks museum, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and an area for celebrity spotting and nightlife today.

Transportation

You can catch a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, w hich has many connecting routes. It’s typically not a good idea to drive a car to the city center. Cycling is incredibly popular here, and it’s easy to find cheap bike rentals around the town. Amsterdam has a flat terrain(地形) and it’s a good choice to explore the city on foot.

Money-saving Tips

●Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District^ where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.

● Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money

●Instead of hiring a tour guide, jump onto a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.

2019高考英语阅读理解-推理判断题(含解析)

2019高考英语阅读理解-推理判断题(含解析) 一、阅读理解 1.根据短文理解,选择正确答案。 Here are six steps to better studying. Pay attention in class Do you have trouble paying attention in class? Are you sitting next to a loud person? Tell your teacher or parents about any problem that is preventing you from paying attention. Take good notes Write down facts that your teacher mentions or writes on the board. Try to use good handwriting so you can read your notes later. It's a good idea to keep your notes organized by subject. Plan ahead for tests and projects Waiting until Thursday night to study for Friday's test will make it hard to do your best. One of the best ways to make sure that doesn't happen is to plan ahead. Write down your test dates. You can then plan how much to do after school each day, and how much time to spend on each topic. Break it up When there's a lot to study, it can help to break things into several parts. Let's say you have a spelling test on 20 words. Instead of thinking about all of the words at once, try breaking them down into five-word groups and work on one or two different groups each night. Ask for help You can't study effectively if you don't understand the material. Be sure to ask your teacher for help. If you're at home when the confusion occurs, your mom or dad might be able to help. Sleep tight So the test is tomorrow and you've followed your study plan—but suddenly you can't remember anything! Don't panic. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you've given it. Try to get a good night's sleep and you'll be surprised by what comes back to you in the morning. (1)We know from the passage that a loud person is ________. A. a student who always answers questions loudly in class B. someone who likes to talk with others in a loud voice C. a student who likes speaking with others in class D. a person who makes a lot of noise in public places (2)If you don't understand what you have learnt, you can ________. A. read your notes over and over again B. turn to people around you for help C. put aside the material for later review D. ask your teacher to explain it the next day (3)By saying “Sleep tight”, what does the author mean?

Man,however,is now a world traveler and cannot turn his back on the airplane. The working lives of too many people depend upon it;whole new industries have been built around its design and opera tion. The holiday-maker,too,with limited time to spend, patiently endures the busy airports and the limited space of the flight to gain those extra hours and even days, relaxing in the sun.Speed controls people's lives;time saved,in work or play,is the important thing—or so we are told.Perhaps those first horsemen, riding free across the wild, open plains, were enjoying a better world than the one we know today. They could travel at will, and the clock was not their master. 【语篇解读】本文是一篇议论文,乘坐飞机旅行方便快捷,节省了出行旳时间,然而却也
