TEXT

Answer to the question: How rudder was torn away in heavy storm prevented it from winning the race. The title is intitled “the Cutty Sark”, but actually it involves two ships. But the author clearly put the emphases on the cutty sark. The author first introduces the historical meaning of the Cutty Sark, and involves another ship--the Thermopylae in order to foil the importance of the Cutty Sark. While describing the course of the race, the author expresses his regret to the failure of the Cutty Sark-- “...didn’t win the race because of bad luck.” If her rudder had not torn away, she would have won the race. The author wrote a lot about the Cutty Sark and favor of the author lies in the Cutty Sark.

例如,课文讲到两艘船的实力时先交代:the Cutty Sark is one of the fastest sailing ships that has ever been built.

The only other ship that can match her was the Thermopylae. matc h 一笔带过,不需要再重复the Thermopylae的实力相当。

The first of the two ships to reach Java after the race had began was the the Thermopylae.

But on the Indian Ocean, the Cutty Sark took the lead.

It seemed certain that she would be the first ship home...

Because of this, the Cutty Sark lost her lead.

介,副词ahead after

As we know, we usually use subjunctive mood to expressive wishes.

There is no doubt that if she had not lost her rudder, it would have won the race asily.

It seem certain that she would be the first ship home.

不光是作者对the Cutty Sark情有独钟,现在每年还有很多游客去参观the Cutty Sark, why is the Cutty Sark so important? Especially for Britain?

Because Britain is a island country, if it wants to connect with other countries, ships are the most means to reach outside world.

Of course, sea exploration is not only important to Britain but to human history as well. We all know how important Columbus’s

discovery of new continent is. Deeply speaking, sea exploration has a symbolic meaning, it symbolizes a kind of adventurous spirit “the longing to know the unknown world, the longing to conquer the natural world”, so it symbolizes the progress of human history.

IV. Summary

The Thermopylae reached Java first, but Cutty Sark took the lead on the Indian Ocean. When the Cutty Sark was struck by a storm, her rudder was torn away. A temporary rudder was made and fitted, but the ship lost the lead. After crossing the Equator, they called in at a port to have a new rudder fitted. Even with a new rudder, the Cutty Sark arrived in England a week after the Thermopylae, which was 500 miles ahead.

V.Letter writing:

Since we set sail from Southampton a week ago, the voyage has been awful. We have seen no sunshine, it has been raining all the time and the winds have been blowing hard. I have been seasick since we left.

This is only a small ship and there are only about fifty other passengers. Three or four have visited me and introduced themselves. they are all sypathetic because they have all been on lots of cruises before.

Tomorrow I want to go up on deck. We are calling into our first port, and I can’t wait to get onto dry land again!

She stands on dry land and is visited by thousands of people each year. She serves as an impressive reminder of the great ships of the past. Before they were replaced by steamships, sailing vessels like the Cutty Sark were used to carry tea from China and wool from Australia. The Cutty Sark was one of the fastest sailing ships that has ever been built. The only other ship to match her was the Thermopylae. Both these ships set out from Shanghai on June 18th, 1872 on an exciting race to England. This race, which went on for exactly four mouths, was the last of its kind. It marked the end of the great tradition of ships with sails and the beginning of a new era. The first of the two ships to reach Java after the race had begun was the Thermopylae, but on the Indian Ocean, the Cutty Sark took the lead. It seemed certain that she would be the first ship home, but during the race she had a lot of bad luck. In August, she was struck by a very heavy storm during which her rudder was torn away. The Cutty Sark rolled from side to side and it became impossible to steer her. A temporary rudder was mad on board from spare planks and it was fitted with great difficulty. This greatly reduced the speed of the ship, for there was a danger that if she traveled too quickly, this rudder would be torn away as well. Because of this, the Cutty Sark lost her lead. After crossing

Even though the road was littered with boulders and pitted with holes, Bruce was not in the least perturbed. Glancing at his map, he informed us that the next village was a mere twenty miles away. It was not that Bruce always underestimated difficulties. He simply had no sense of danger at all. No matter what the conditions were, he believed that a car should be driven as fast as it could possibly go. As we bumped over the dusty track, we swerved to avoid large boulders. The wheels scooped up stones which hammered ominously under the car. We felt sure that sooner or later a stone would rip a hole in our petrol tank or damage the engine. Because of this, we kept looking back, wondering if we were leaving a trail of oil and petrol behind us. What a relief it was when the boulders suddenly disappeared, giving way to a stretch of plain where the only obstacles were clumps of bushes. But there was worse to come. Just ahead of us there was a huge fissure. In response to renewed pleadings, Bruce stopped. Though we all got out to examine the fissure, he remained in the car. We informed him that the fissure extended for fifty yards and was two feet wide and four feet deep. Even this had no effect. Bruce went into a low gear and drove at a terrifying speed, keeping the front wheels astride the crack as he followed its zig-zag course. Before we had time to worry about what might happen, we were

文中提到:on the right(left), 在右边(左边);和in the middle of, 在中间。 There's a box on the table. There's a bird above the table. 在……里面:in sth. There's a ball in the box. 在……下面:under sth. There's a cat under the table. 2.

He an swered me, but he spoke n either slow ly nor clearly. 'I am a foreig ner, ' I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not un dersta nd him. My teacher n ever spoke En glish like that! The English understand each other, but I don ' t understand them ! Do they speak English ? Not only ...... ,but ....... a s well 以及neither……noi的使用上。 I arrived in Lon don at last . The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter.
