Patricia Blues, 29, has a new aim in life: to keep drivers’ hands on their running wheels and off their cell phones. On November 2, 2007, Blues lived through a horrible experience. A motorist dialing a cell phone drove through a stop sign at 45 miles per hour and run into the side of Blues’ car. Blues’ 2-year-old daughter was killed immediately in the crash.

Blues has since contributed her time to pushing for laws that would prevent this

type of tragedy from happening again.

Cell phones are not the only distractions(分神) that cause accidents. Eating, changing CDs, reading maps, talking to passengers, and just reaching for an object on the floor can be dangerous. Therefore, the emphasis(重点)should be on educating drivers to avoid all distractions. However, talking on cell phones might be easier to control than eating or changing music. At least 34 states have already passed laws to control cell phone use in moving cars. No state has forbidden it yet, but several US cities have. Worldwide, 13 nations, including Australia, England, Germany, Japan and China have banned drivers’ use of cell phones in moving cars.

To date, no scientific evidence has been published showing that talking on the phone affects driving safety. But according to a test by some high school students “Driving while on the phone does affect safety and probably shouldn’t be done.”

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

We are social creatures and need friends. And it shouldn’t be difficult to make friends. How can you make friends? Here is some advice.

76

Have you heard the saying “You have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince”? Well, you have to talk to a lot of people to find a friend! 77 If you are shy or just out of practice, this can be very difficult, so just break the ice by asking people questions like “Where do you live?”

Join a group.

A great way to meet new people is to join a social group, like a book club or an exercise class,—anywhere you can meet people. 78 Secondly, because you see people in a group regularly, you will have a much better chance to get to know them.

Spend time with people.

79 Make a small gesture! Don’t be shy! You need to take this small risk to let people know that you are interested in them. Activities such as shopping are helpful at this stage of a friendship because they allow you to discover each other’s ideas and find some common ground.

Make friends your priority(优先).

80 Make friends a priority in your life. Commit to calling people once a week or extending an invitation once a week. Be consistent and don’t give up

.

A. Make small talk with people that you meet.

B. The seeds of new friendship are everywhere.

C. Start by talking to lots of people.

D. After you’ve identified some potential(可能的)friends, spend more time with them.

E. If having friends is important to you, you must make time for people in your busy

第三节书面表达(15分)

Dear Mr. Alien,

I’m glad to receive your letter, which told me about your planet Mars.

Now I will tell you something about our planet—Earth. There are trees and flowers on most parts of Earth, and three-fourths of the Earth is covered by water. So it is a good place for us to live. But unfortunately, with the development of industry, humans are now destroying these wonderful resources.

Everyone on Mars has got powers that allow them to travel by air any time they want. What an interesting ability! However, we have so many ways to get around too, such as cars, trains, planes and so on. We can choose our favorite one. I hope you will pay a visit to our Earth soon.

Give my best regards to Mrs. Alien and your two baby aliens!

Your friend,

Li Hua.

For almost two months Dominic York, a 23-year-old hairdresser, wandered about hospitals at night, wearing a white coat and pretending he was a doctor. Yesterday he proudly claimed in court that despite his complete lack of medical experience or qualifications, he had saved several people’s lives. He had even been allowed to assist a surgeon during an emergency operation on a patient who was about to die on something she had swallowed.

“I watched one of those TV dramas about a hospital and suddenly I felt like playing one of the roles myself. So I put on a white jacket and a stethoscope(听诊器) and walked around one of the biggest hospitals in London. At first I just watched. Once you learn how doctors talk to patients, nurses and other doctors, it’s easy to take people in,” he said.

One of the patients he treated was Laura Kennan. She had been knocked down by a car and fainted. When she came into hospital, York was standing over her.

“He looked very professional. He told me his name was Doctor Simon. Then he gave me some sort of injection,” she said. And then he suddenly cleared of f when a nurse asked who he was. She didn’t think there was anything wrong. “I would never have realized he was a fake if a policewoman hadn’t showed me his photograph a week later. When the policewoman told me who he really was, I could hardly believe my ears.

Judge Raymond Adams told York that he was “shocked and horrified” that he got away with his cheating for so long, and then sentenced him to eighteen months in a special prison for criminals with mental disorders.

“I can only hope that this will not lead to further problem. After all, you will have considerable opportunity to study the behavior of the psychiatrists(精神科医生) who will look after you while you are there. If you try to persuade people that you yourself are a psychiatrist after you are set free, I shall make sure that you are given a much longer sentence,” Judge Adams warned York.

56 York was proud of the fact that _________

59 The judge’s remark implied that York would be more severely punished if he _____

A. pretended to be a psychiatrist

B. tried to get away from prison

C. was proud of what he had done

D. studied the behavior of the psychiatrist

President Coolidge’s statement, “ The business of America is business,” still points to an important truth today that business institutions have more prestige(威望)in America society than any other kind of organizations, including the government. Why do business institutions possess this great prestige?

One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the aim of competition than other institutions in society. Since competition is seen as the major source of progress and prosperity by most Americans, competitive business institutions are respected. Competition is not only good in itself, it is the means by which other basic American values such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity, and hard work are protected.

Competition protects the freedom of the individual by ensuring that there is no monopoly (垄断)of power. In contrast to one, all-powerful government, many businesses compete against each other for advantage. Theoretically, if one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers, it will lose to competing business which treats its customers more fairly. Where many businesses compete for the customers’ dollars, they can not afford to treat them like inferiors(下等人)or slaves.

A contrast is often made between business, which is competitive, and government, which is a monopoly. Because business is competitive, many Americans believe that is more supportive of freedom than government, even though government leaders are elected by the people and business leaders are not. Many Americans believe, then, that competition is as important as, or even more important than, democracy (民主) in preserving freedom.

60 The statement “ The business of America is business” probably means _________.

A. America is a great power in world business

A. its role in protecting basic American values.

B. its complete control of power

C. its democratic way of exercising leadership

D. its function in preserving personal freedom

The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there’s a power failure, people grope(摸索)about in candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.

Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for millions of years. Scientists are discovering more and more that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit human-beings.

All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they form an electrocardiogram(心电图),which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram(脑电图). The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small—often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have become so specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cells are linked together, the effects can be astonishing.

The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send a jolt (摇晃) of as much as eight hundred volts of electricity through the water in which it lives. ( an electric house current is only one hundred twenty volts.) As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel’s body are specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to length of its body.

64 What might be the best title of the passage?

A. Secrets of electricity

B. History of electricity

C. The amazing electric eel

D. Modern age of electricity

65 People began to understand ___ a little more than two centuries ago.

A. the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity.

B. how an electrocardiogram forms

C. brain waves of electricity

D. how electricity works

66 The word “eel” refers to a kind of ______.

A. electricity

B. fish

C. mammal

D. container

67 What could we conclude from the passage?

A. All living things generate electricity

B. All electricity benefits human-beings

C. All things will spoil without electricity

D. The age of electricity has been several centuries

There are two opposing theories about what makes a good relationship. Some psychologists believe opposites attract and form a complete unit. Others swear by the old saying “birds of a feather stay together.” Either type of relationship can work equally well, but research has shown that couples who share similar interests, attitudes and backgrounds are more likely to stay together longer. Of course, it’s tempting(诱惑,吸引人的) to believe in the first flush of passion that your love can overcome all barriers, but in reality that is unlikely to be the case. Successful relationships also need their fair share of that hard –to-define factor known as “chemistry” But all of these things aside, most happy and contented couples would agree that a relationship cannot survive if it doesn’t have one key ingredient —compatibility(相容性). To identify how compatible you and your partner really are, choose one answer only to each question in the following section A , then (but only if you think you can stand to hear the worst!) compare your answers with those of your partner.

Section A General Relationship

This section concerns the quality of your interpersonal relationship with your partner ---- how much you like to be together, how much intimacy(亲密) and caring there is, how you deal with disagreements, jealousies, and the whole process of give and take. In many ways, this is the most sensitive indicator of compatibility since it affects, and is influenced by, all the other more specific areas.

1Do you often think about ending your relationship

a.It would be very painful if you were to part.

b.Only when you are fed up with your partner.

c.It is almost a daily occurrence

2How often do you and your partner communicate with each other?

a.You tell each other all your most private fears and fantasies.

b.There are some things in your lives you would prefer to keep private.

c.The survival of your relationship depends largely on regular lies.

3On your birthday, your partner would…

a.Instinctively(本能地) know exactly what would please you.

b.Probably buy you something you have to exchange later.

c.Manage to waste money on a totally unsuitable gift

4Do you like to be alone together?

a Your partner is the most exciting person you know.

b You feel that a break from each other improves your appreciation.

c You try to reduce the boredom by surrounding yourself with friends.

5What sort of arguments do you have?

a Disagreements are openly aired and quickly solved.

b There are some topics which you had better avoid discussion.

c You arguing constantly over minor as well as major issues.

6Have you made a good choice in your partner?

a You have never met anyone who made you feel quite so fulfilled.

b You believe life is a compromise(妥协) and you are both reasonably well-matched.
