had a lot of fresh air and exercise. The children were more than satisfied. Emily thought no

other family had a nicer Christmas than they did. Christmas should be an occasion to express

II.Fill in each blank in the passage with the most likely an- swer. ( 15 points)There'are two

types of people in the world. Although they have equal 26 . of health and wealth and the other

comforts of life, one becomes happy, while the other becomes 27 . This ari-ses from the

different ways 28 they consider things, persons and .events, and the resulting effects upon

their minds. The people who are to be happy 29 their attention on the conveniences of things,

the pleasant parts of conversation, the 30 dishes and the fine weather. They enjoy all the

9

…………………………………………………………精品自学考试资料推荐………………………………………………

cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak of just the opposite. 31 , they

are continually discontented. By their remarks, they sour the pleasures of society, 32 many

people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded 33 ,

such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The tendency to criticize and be disgusted

is perhaps taken up 34 by imitation. It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. They

offend many others; nobody treats them with more than the most common 35 and respect. This

frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim 36 obtaining

some advantage in rank or fortune, nobody wishes them success. If they bring on themselves public

disapproval, nobody will 37 or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their misconduct.

These people should abandon this bad habit and be 38 with what is pleasing. The habit may

be strong, but it may be 39 when those who have it are convinced of its bad effects 40 ,

their interests and tastes.

Passage 1

The dream changed. For hours, it seemed, I had been wandering aimlessiy through a silent forest of pine trees ; now ! was alone in a small boat which was drifting along lazily, past

tree-covered islands, whose bare rocky edges rose abruptly from the transparent water.

I was

being carried between grassy banks where meadows sprinkled with butter-cups sloped to the fiver.

Soft fluffy clouds were reflected in the velvet surface of the water. The current must have been

steady and strong, for the boat kept moving forward smoothly, without meeting any obstacle, as

though it were being steered by some invisible hand. Soothed by the peace of my journey,

I had

lost all count of time. Eventually, I became aware that the boat was gliding slowly towards the

bank. At this point where a narrow stretch of silver sand was bounded on either side by heaped

granite boulders, an old man was standing, his hand shading his eyes. As the boat ran around,

he came up to me, held out his hand, and greeted me courteously. You have reached us at last.

10

…………………………………………………………精品自学考试资料推荐………………………………………………

We have been expecting you for so long. Would you follow me, please. I hesitated there for a

moment. I suddenly felt a chill conviction of danger, a shiver that. suggested overwhelming evil.

Yet this old man with sensitive delicate features seemed kindly and gracious. He noticed my

suspicion and smiled at me reas, suringly. You need not be afraid, he murmured. You are deeply

respected by us all. Everything has been prepared for you. We have done everything in our power

to honour you. Now please come with me to the place chosen for you. I dared not risk offending

him. But for reasons I cannot explain, I avoided touching his hand outstretched to assist me

as I stepped out of the boat, and I followed him reluctantly. Our feet sank into the yielding

sand as we made our way towards a lowflight of marble steps. The steps had been polished so

skilffully that they seemed to glow in soft shades of rose, lilac and ivory. At, the top my guide

paused and looked back atme. I gasped in amazement at the incredible beauty of the scene before

me at that moment. And again I shivered involuntarily with an inexplicable dread. Passage 2

Every man ought so to manage as to live within his means. This practice is of the very essence

of honesty; for if a man does not manage honestly to live within his own means, he must necessarily,

be living dishonestly upon the means of-somebody else. Those who are careless about personal

expenditure and consider merely their own satisfaction without regard for the comfort of others

generally find out the real uses of money when it is too late. Though by nature generous, these

thriftless ( 不节俭的) persons are often driven in the end to do very shabby things. They dawdle

with( 浪费) their money as with their time, draw bills upon the future, anticipate their earnings

and are thus under the necessity of dragging after them a load of debts and obligations which

seriously handicap their ability to act as free and honest men. The loose cash which many persons

throw away uselessly, and worse, would often form a basis of fortune and independence for life.

These wasters are their own worst enemies, though they are generally found amongst the ranks

of those who criticize he injustice of the world. But if a man will not be his own friend,

how can he expect others will? Orderly men of moderate means have always something left in their

pockets tO help others; whereas your wasteful and careless fellows who spend all never find an

opportunity for helping'anybody. It is a poor sort of economy, however, to be a skinflint. Narrow-mindedness in living and dealing is generally shortsighted and often leads to failure.

11

…………………………………………………………精品自学考试资料推荐………………………………………………

The penny soul, it is said, never comes to twopence. Generosity and liberality, like honesty,

prove the best policy after all. And there are numerous examples of brilliant results from a

course of generous and honest policy. The proverb says: An empty bag cannot stand upright. Neither can a man who is in debt. Debt makes everything a temptation. It lowers a man in

self-respect, places him at the mercy of his tradesmen and his servants and makes him

a slave

in many respects; for he can no longer call himself his own master, nor boldly look the world

in the face. It is also difficult for a man who is in debt to be truthful. Therefore,

it is said

that lying rides on debt' s back. The debtor has to frame excuses to his creditor for postponing

payment of the money he owes him; and probably also to bring about falsehoods. It is easy enough

for a man who will exercise a healthy resolution to avoid incurring the first obligation; but

the facility with which that has been incurred often becomes a temptation to a second;and very

soon the unfortunate borrower becomes so entangled that no belated exertion of industry can set

him free. The first step in debt is like the first step in falsehood, almost involving the necessity

of proceeding in the same course, debt following debt as lie follows lie. Dr. Johnson held that

early debt is ruin. His remarks on the subject are weighty and worthy of being held.

in

remembrance.Do not, said he, accustom yourself to considering debt only as an inconvenience;

you will find it a disaster. Poverty takes away so many means of doing good and produces so much

inability to resist evil, both natural and moral, that it is by all virtuous means to be avoided.

Let it be your first care, then, not to be in any man' s debt. Resolve not to be poor;

whatever

you have, spend less. Poverty is a great enemy to human happiness; it certainly destroys liberty

and it makes some virtues impracticable and others extremely difficult. No man can help others

that wants help himself; we must have enough before .we have to spare.

2019年自考英语二历年试题(真题)及答案

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.
